3 From the Rabbi s Desk March 16, 2018 Friday Evening - The Call to Belong Our sages believed firmly that the Torah was a divine proclamation directly from the mouth of the Almighty. Therefore every single word in the Torah mattered. Nothing was extraneous or unnecessary. Each and every word counted. However as we begin this week s Torah portion we see a rather awkward introduction with its opening word, Vayikra. If we look carefully at the verse we will notice that its construction is really quite odd. Literally translated, the first verse of the Torah reads: He called to Moses and God spoke to him from the Tent of Meeting, saying The first phrase seems to be redundant. If we are told that God spoke to Moses, why say in addition to that, He called? The answer is that God s call to Moses was something prior to and different from what God went on to say. The latter were the details; however the former was the summons, the mission not unlike God s first call to Moses at the burning bush where He invited him to undertake the task that would define his life: leading the people out of exile and slavery to freedom in the Promised Land. Why this second call? Probably because the book of Vayikra has, on the face of it, nothing to do with Moses. The original name given to it by our sages was Torat Cohanim, the Law of the Priests. Strikingly, we know that Moses was not a priest. That role belonged to his brother Aaron. So it was as if God were saying to Moses: this too is part of your vocation. You are not a priest but you are the vehicle through which I reveal all My laws, including those of the priests. You cannot set this aspect aside because it is part of your vocation. We tend to take the concept of a vocation the word itself comes from the Latin for a call for granted as if every culture has such an idea. However, it is not so. The great German sociologist Max Weber pointed out that the idea of vocation, so central to the social ethic of Western culture, is essentially a religious conception, that of a task set by God. And if we look to our tradition we will see that this notion was born in the Hebrew Bible. As one contemporary rabbi explains, Elsewhere there was little communication between the gods and human beings. The idea that God might invite human beings to become His partners and emissaries was revolutionary. Yet that is what Judaism is about. Jewish history began with God s call to Abraham to leave his land and family. God called to Moses and the prophets. There is a particularly vivid account in Isaiah s mystical vision in which he saw God enthroned and surrounded by singing angels: Then I heard the Voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send? And who will go for us? And I said, Here am I. Send me! (Isaiah 6:8) And the most touching account is the story of the young Samuel, dedicated by his mother Hannah to serve God in the sanctuary at Shiloh where he acted as an assistant to Eli the priest. In bed at night he heard a voice calling his name. He assumed it was Eli. He ran to see what he wanted but Eli told him he had not called. This happened a second time and then a third, and by then Eli realized that it was God calling the child. He told Samuel that the next (continued on page 19) 3

12 Hello Everyone, Congregation Beth Ohr has partnered with Community Recycling and their Shoe- Box Recycling program. Together we are on a mission to help promote the importance of shoe recycling while raising funds to help further our efforts. ShoeBox Recycling is easy, engaging and rewarding for everyone involved. Participating is simple. We are collecting gently used shoes for reuse, meaning all the shoes we recycle as a group are destined for another home. From South America and Africa to areas right here in the United States, our ShoeBox Recycling efforts will go to help people and communities in over 50 countries. And what s even better is the many ways that our community benefits as well. Not only will your recycled shoes help Congregation Beth Ohr raise funds, it will also help keep usable shoes out of our local landfills. ShoeBox Recycling also gives us a chance to connect with the people and places that receive our recycled shoes. By writing a SoleMate Note to include with your shoes, you can let their new owner know about where they came from, what they were used for, or even any special memories attached to them. In return, they can write back to us and we can make a SoleMate connection. So start cleaning out your closets and start looking under your bed for gently used shoes. Every pair you recycle means extra funds for us, less landfill waste and the potential to connect us to a SoleMate! For more information contact Allan Benish at abenish@aol.com and check out Community Recycling online at You can drop off your shoes at the synagogue and place them in the box labeled SHOES in the lobby during regular office hour of 9:00AM to 3:00PM. Please see next page for What Is and What Is Not allowed 12

19 The Rabbi s Desk (continued from page 3) time the Voice called his name, he should reply, Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. It did not occur to the child that it might be God summoning him to a mission, but it was. Thus began his career as a prophet, judge and anointer of Israel s first two kings, Saul and David. These were all prophetic calls, and prophecy ended during the Second Temple period. Nonetheless the idea of vocation remains for all those who still believe in Divine providence. Each of us is different; therefore we each have unique talents and skills to bring to the world. The fact that you are here, in this place, at this time, with these abilities, is not accidental. There is a task to perform, and God is calling you to it. And so that is where the concept of membership in a religious community intersects with the notion of a sacred calling. The idea is that no matter what you do outside of the walls of this sanctuary, no matter what your profession or, if you are retired, no matter how you occupy your time, by joining us you are making a statement that you wish to accept the Call to Belong. And that in itself is a sacred act. The essayist Logan Pearsall Smith once said, The test of a vocation is the love of the drudgery it involves. All real achievement requires backbreaking preparation. The most common estimate is 10,000 hours of deep practice. Are you willing to pay this price? It is no accident that Vayikra begins with a call because it is a book about sacrifices, and vocation involves sacrifice. We are willing to make sacrifices when we sense that a specific role or task is what we are called on to do. In our religious institution that functions with a professional and administrative staff of only two, this is the reality. What we need to do in order to continue the vibrancy of our congregation and the rebirth of programming, classes and support is to ask everyone to take part in this sacred project. And do not be mistaken, this can be life-changing. For each of us God has a task: work to perform, a kindness to show, a gift to give, love to share, loneliness to ease, pain to heal, or broken lives to help mend. Discerning that task, hearing God s call, is what gives a life meaning and purpose. Where what we want to do meets what needs to be done and that, my friends, is precisely where God wants us to be. 19

24 Beth Ohr Annual Brunch Honoring Mayor Owen Henry Sunday June 10, 2018 from 11:00 to 2:30 Save the date. Also plan on selling ads as this is our major fundraiser. If you want to be on the committee, contact Ed Mendlowitz at or AL DAVIS, PAST PRESIDENT OF NORTHERN NY REGION, FJMC Remarks at his training session at the FJMC Region Board Meeting on Mar 11, 2018 Hearing Men s Voices Why we focus on men: Because of poor hand off from pediatric care delivery, men are less likely to visit a health care practitioner and preventable health problems go undetected and unmanaged Many of the risk factors which result in chronic illnesses (tobacco smoking, physical inactivity, poor diet, obesity and alcohol abuse) remain highest among men Men s health issues place significant financial burdens on our socioeconomic systems due to late treatment costs, longer years of illness, loss from the workforce, negative impact on children and other factors Why men don t take care of themselves: Knowledge deficit. Lack of specific direction, targets and goals Social constraints of gender. Boys are taught to suck it up; men don t cry; be tough! Male culture and societal influences, attitudes and psyche Rewards out weight risks? Addictions and Habits Myth folklore: People go to hospitals to die, Surgery spreads cancer, If they find something there is little you can do about it (Lack of perceived benefits) Kristallnacht Remembrance Booklet Beth Ohr will be publishing a Kristallnacht Remembrance Booklet on Friday Nov. 9, 2018 to memorialize Beth Ohr members, families and friends that were subjected to the Nazi led inhuman barbaric treatment of Kristallnacht and the Holocaust solely because of being Jewish or their family s Jewish background. It must never happen again and remembering is a way to stop it from reoccurring. If you have a story to tell about yourself, a family member or friend, let us capture it in this booklet.
