2 December 2013 page 2 Worship Services Friday Evenings 8pm* Saturday Mornings 10am President s Message There Is No Temple Like Our Temple (excerpts from Yom Kippur Appeal) What other Temple has not had a 12 or 13-year-old s Bar or Bat Mitzvah for a son or daughter of a congregant for 15 years? In what other Temple is there no one who can tell you that they were born in or had their own Bar or Bat Mitzvah here? Where else is the average age 80+? And where we look forward to our new 66-year-old Baby Boomer Members to start to become our Future Leaders. Our cadre of members in their 90s makes our large Octogenarian Group feel very young and our Septuagenarians feel like real youngsters. We live in paradise walk and swim and play golf and tennis in our neighborhoods. We make each other feel young. Since our dues cover only 60 percent of the costs of running our Temple we are thankful to all who have been giving extra each year to our Leadership Circle and continue to do so. However due to the fact that there have been between little or no major repairs to our building since the last addition, which was added when Dr. Jerry Rosenthal was President in 2000, our insurance carrier Cincinnati Financial made it very clear that we would have to implement many of the repairs that were outlined in a 36 page report we received from Delta Engineering. The Board of Trustees on October 1, 2013 in a unanimous 19-0 vote authorized repairs of approximately $120,000. This is a onetime, once in a generation problem As your President in , I urge that each of you experience that wonderful feeling of euphoria that we all get by giving what we know is our fair share to bring our Temple back to good health. 3 Temple Beth Israel Bulletin page 3 From the Rabbi s Study All Wreaths Are Not the Same Two weeks before Christmas, upwards of four hundred thousand wreaths adorned with large red bows will be placed at graves at cemeteries in all fifty states and around the world administered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. They will be donated by the Wreaths Across American organization (WAA). Now referred to as memorial wreaths, the WAA program began several years ago as a Christmasrelated event. While paying homage to our nation s veterans in this way is certainly laudable, during my tenure earlier this year as president of the Sarasota-Manatee Rabbinical Association (SMRA) I was informed that these wreaths were being laid at Jewish graves in the Sarasota National Cemetery. Since SMRA members and others deemed this inappropriate, I wrote a letter to the director of the cemetery requesting that Jewish graves not be wreathed. He responded that while wreaths would continue to be laid at Jewish graves, family members could opt out by requesting that it not be done. In a subsequent phone conversation, I shared that though some Jewish families might not mind, the vast majority would not want the wreath placed on their loved one s grave. Therefore, I suggested an approach opposite to the director s, laying wreaths at Jewish graves only when a family specifically requested it be done. I also conveyed that there are many Jewish graves for which there is no loved one left to act on their behalf. After later contacting the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration in Washington, a representative informed me that the Sarasota Director s response to my objection conformed to VA policy. When I took issue with the policy, he suggested I write to the VA s Undersecretary for Memorial Affairs to express my disagreement. After writing the Undersecretary and not receiving a reply for several months I phoned his office. Told that the delay was due to the Undersecretary s initial dissatisfaction with his department s reply, I was assured it would be forthcoming soon. When the response finally arrived (after six months), I was surprised by its lack of clarity. In the meantime, I had contacted WAA to ask that its local organizing committee refrain from placing wreaths on Jewish graves in Sarasota. The committee quickly agreed to this request. I then undertook new conversations with VA officials about who sets the wreath laying policy, WAA or the VA? I emphasized that Arlington National Cemetery, which is administered by the U.S. Army, is very clear that WAA wreaths are not to be placed on Jewish graves unless a particular request has been made for it to be done. However, I was told that VA cemetery directors follow instructions given to them by the WAA. Though pleased the wreaths would no longer be placed on Jewish graves at the Sarasota National Cemetery, SMRA members felt this should be the case in all VA cemeteries. When I re-contacted the WAA about the desire to have a directive sent to all its local organizations about not placing wreaths on Jewish graves, a WAA spokesperson responded that this, in fact, already obtained due to a previous effort to address the concern initiated by a group of Jewish war veterans. Nevertheless, there is no guarantee that all the local WAA committees always adhere to the directive. Armed with this information, I once again got in touch with the VA in Washington. After discussing the situation at length, an official told me that a letter would be sent this year to all VA cemetery directors underscoring that, per instructions from the national WAA and the VA, no wreaths should be placed on Jewish graves unless specifically requested. A few people have wondered why I would devote so much time to what they consider a relatively minor matter. One reason is that, as the president of SMRA, I considered it my responsibility to aggressively pursue it. But I also, personally, feel strongly about the issue. All wreaths are not the same. For example, wreaths are often laid during memorial ceremonies at Yad Vashem. But they do not possess big red ribbons and are not identified with Christmas. If you should become aware that wreaths are being laid at Jewish graves in a VA cemetery in the absence of a specific request that it be done, please contact me. I think we owe it to our Jewish veterans that the Star of David on their gravestones will not be compromised.

5 Vice-President of World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ)at Temple December 21, 10am Women On Our Own Women On Our Own held their season opening luncheon at Michael s on East on Wednesday, October 30th. The group welcomed new members Eve Kommel and Dr. Lois Barson. Temple Beth Israel Bulletin page 5 On Saturday morning, December 21, WUPJ Vice President, Rabbi Gary Bretton-Granatoor, will speak about the vital role the WUPJ is playing on the global Jewish scene today. An expert in interfaith relations, Rabbi Granatoor has held high level positions at the Anti-Defamation League and the URJ and has also been quite active in advancing Muslim-Jewish dialogue. He served as Senior Rabbi of the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue in New York for eight years. Since its establishment in London in 1926, the WUPJ has grown to support more than 1,400 Reform/Progressive congregations in 47 countries. It provides leadership development programs, fosters interfaith initiatives, advocates for social justice, engages Jewish youth and young adults, and fights anti-semitism. We at Temple Beth Israel are very fortunate to have not one but two former high-ranking national officers from WUPJ. Gerry Daniel and Ina Rae Levy both held leadership positions and continue work with the North American Council. The service will be abridged in order to spotlight Rabbi Granatoor's presentation. He will take questions after his talk and at the lunch TBI is providing following the service. The World Union for Progressive Judaism serves as a religious life preserver to many forgotten Jews and Jewish communities around the world. Please consider making a contribution to this vital organization. Our thanks to Ina Rae Levy for facilitating Rabbi Granatoor's visit to TBI. In an act of great generosity, Bea Friedman has mailed a check for $25,000 in support of our Temple and our efforts to remain The Center of Jewish Life on Longboat Key. The reality at TBI and Temples across the country is that member dues do not cover all Temple expenses. As congregations look for ways to cover these yearly deficits how fortunate we are to have committed members like Mrs. Friedman and their continuing leadership and support. Rabbi Katz to Speak at BIW Lunch December 16 Forty years after the ordination of the first woman rabbi, women are now at the forefront of Jewish change.
