2 November 2011 page 2 Worship Services Friday Evenings 8pm* Saturday Mornings 10am *Early service Friday, November 25, 5:30pm President s Message In preparing for my message for this month s Bulletin, I was inspired by the words of Mark Hoffrichter, president of congregation Kol Ami of Frederick, MD. He told the story of a Brooklyn synagogue president who came across some long-buried documents which described the formation of her congregation almost 100 year before. Mark Hoffrichter began thinking - where will our Temple be in 100 years? I started asking myself, Where will TBI be in 50 years or even 20 or 10 years from now? Most, if not all of us have been following the news about health care. Regardless of how we feel about this issue, I would like to discuss with you Temple Beth Israel care. What does it cost to insure the health and well-being of our congregation so that we can be vibrant and healthy in 10, 20, 50 or even 100 years from now? The premium is divided into three distinct parts. The first is input. We, the officers and board, need to know what is good about the Temple and what is working for us. We need to know where improvements are needed. It is nice to receive a phone call or a note expressing appreciation for a deed performed or an activity that was well received so that we are encouraged to repeat these actions or events. It is important to know when we need improvement so we can resolve any issue or prevent a reoccurrence. I find it sad that people have left the congregation over a perceived slight, a misunderstanding or because they were not given the table they expected at a Temple affair. How sad it is to hear from third parties that someone has or had a bone to pick with someone or about something be it a Board officer, Temple staff or the Rabbi especially after the train has left the station. Your timely input is essential to the well-being of our Temple family. The second part of the premium is referral. Stores, products, restaurants, physicians all thrive on referrals and so does our synagogue. How many of you here are members because of the word or deed of another? Advertising does not do the trick and is expensive. The importance of how you portray TBI to your friends is measurable it can make the difference between maintaining or increasing our membership and suffering a declining membership. I do not need to remind you that ours is an aging congregation. We are losing members because of relocation or demise. The health of Temple Beth Israel depends upon getting new members. The third aspect of our premium includes community, financial support and personal involvement. Our congregation will not turn away anyone because of their inability to pay dues. We are fortunate that less than 10 percent of our congregants require assistance in meeting their dues obligation. In some congregations, up to half of the congregants require financial assistance. Our dues cover approximately 62 percent of what is required to maintain our synagogue. The rest must come from other sources. Donations from auxiliaries such as the BIW, the Men s Club and WOOO are vital. The Temple Beth Israel Endowment Fund contributes significantly to our operating budget. Contributions in celebration of simchas, condolences, and yarzheits help. The Gala and Caberet Nite fund-raising events are also major contributors to reducing a potential budget crisis. Donations to the Temple s Endowment through bequests and charitable trusts help insure TBI s financial future. Two years ago, Bill Sandy, a vice-president, organized the Leadership Circle. This annual opportunity allows members to augment their dues with an additional contribution. Depending upon the amount pledged, the member is recognized at gold, silver or bronze levels and a plaque recognizing the honor is affixed to the membership display in the social hall. Pictures of previous years plaques are displayed in the library. Members are also invited to attend a member s reception early in January. Last year there were 99 members; so far this year 71 have joined the Leadership Circle. The campaign continues until the end of November. So please consider joining or rejoining this remarkable group. When I was a kid, maybe 6 or 7 years old, I would attend yontif services in a shul to which my grandparents belonged. I have no idea of what their dues were nor what devices they used to raise money, except on yontif, the gabbai would stand in front of the bimah and begin auctioning the aliyot. The gabbai, before the readings would start, would shout out the aliyah and start the bidding. Maftir Jonah, the Haftarah for the Yom Kippur Mincha service, he would cry out in Yiddish, Fiftzic tular, seczic tular. At a hundric tular, one hundred dollars, he would sigh with relief, Azoy! This was my first experience with a Yom Kippur appeal. Some of you may have had a similar experience. While we do not sell honors, we do reach out to the attendees by including an envelope in the yom tov service booklet. Now that the High Holy Days are over, we are searching for volunteers for our many positions and projects. Some are ongoing, some are one-time, and others require a good deal of time. What interests you the most? Member- continued on page 8

3 Temple Beth Israel Bulletin page 3 From the Rabbi s Study A Harbor of Time Instant gratification has become so inculcated these days that it has become just about the only kind of gratification many actually think matters at all. The quest for immediate fulfillment makes us continually impatient. This is true for us both as individuals and as a nation. ASAP has now become the rule, not the exception. Why has instant gratification become so di rigueur? Because, by virtue of modern technologies, much of what we want or need is at our fingertips. Never before in human history can we acquire so much in such little time. Yet our generation is surely not an especially happy one. On the contrary, the world is experiencing profound moral and social breakdown. Amid all the plenty, all the consumer possibility, there is a telling emptiness. The prominent American poet Edward Markham articulated this feeling of hollow unease when he composed the following lines: We all are blind until we see That in the human plan Nothing is worth the making if It does not make the man. Why build these cities glorious If man unbuilded goes? In vain we build the world, unless The builder also grows. Like the ripening of fruit, the development of the builder takes time. Individuation and maturity cannot be gained with the split-second push of a button. Just because we may think we have become masters of the internet because we were among the first to acquire the hottest new cellphone, this doesn t mean we have become closer to mastering ourselves. The Biblical book, Song of Songs, eloquently echoed this theme thousands of years ago, They made me keeper of the vineyard, but my own vineyard I have not kept (1:6). In response to the quickened and distorting stresses of our age, caring for soul has become the subject of a tremendous number of books. However, concern for the neshama is as ancient as humanity itself. It is just that what was once appreciated as an integrated, on-going aspect of life is now conceived as one of several increasingly disjointed elements of it. We no longer know how to put more purposefully the pieces of the puzzle of our existence together, so they all too often just remain unconnected in the box. Authentic religion provides the table, the altar if you will, on which to try to fit the pieces. It provides the space, continuity, inspiration GIFT SHOP NEWS... and safety to assemble our spirit. At times the puzzle may be broken up or seemingly missing a piece, but a progressive faith will always be there with encouragement and support in reassembling or re-envisioning it. At this time of Thanksgiving let us be grateful for the many pieces of our life puzzle that give us contentment and meaning. So too, we should be appreciative of the freedom, guidance, patience and wisdom our religion offers in allowing us to look at our puzzles from a wide range of perspectives and in myriad dimensions. This is how Judaism has always served to nurture new possibilities, confidence and strength. But this doesn t happen in an instant. It takes time. Maybe that s why Judaism, one of the world s oldest religions, is also one of its most insightful and potent. Gloria Sabin and Linda Berliner, Co-Chairs The from our Temple that none of us like to receive begins We regret to inform you. Yet many of us are at the stage in life where this communication is more frequent than we would prefer. This kind of milestone was particularly poignant for the staff of our library as well as our patrons when the news was about a key long time volunteer, Hermine Silver. Many of you had your day brightened by Hermine s knowledge, guidance, and love of books. What you didn t see was her behind the scenes service doing the tasks that keep a library humming. Indeed, during the summer, including the last summer of declining health, Hermine provided the on-site leadership of library activities. The library is one more source of comfort, an idea that would have delighted Hermine. The room itself, and libraries across the world, are places of refuge and Social Action ber we will collect dry and canned goods specific to the Thanksgiving holiday: canned yams or white potatoes, instant potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy, corn, green beans, and stuffing mix. The shelves contain the wisdom of the ages. Let me point out some books in our collection that are particularly relevant to climbing out of life s low points: Say Yes to Life: A Book of Thoughts for Better Living by Sidney Greenberg, a reflection of a deep understanding of the human condition. A Treasury of Comfort, edited by Sidney Greenberg, words of consolation and guidance. To Begin Again by Naomi Levy, a book of comfort and faith leading us through tragic times to cope with life s darkest moments. When Bad Things Happen to Good People by Rabbi Harold S. 7 Leadership Circle 2012 During the period between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, otherwise known as the Days of Awe, is time for reflection upon our lives, past, present, and future. It is also a time for us to count our blessings. We who live in Sarasota and especially on Longboat Key, live in a paradise of beautiful weather, lovely homes, and a Temple facility that is ready and willing to meet our every need spiritually and socially. However, we must realize that all of this does not come without each of us contributing to maintain our Temple. In order to continue all of our wonderful programs, classes, lectures, and services, it is necessary for us to emulate our past years commitment of contributing to the Leadership Circle. At this printing, over 70 members have contributed in excess of $60,000 to the Leadership Circle. Our campaign will conclude with a recognition celebration Brunch on January 29, 2012 to honor those donors. Please consider becoming a part of this group and notify the office regarding your contribution by November 30, 2011 in order to be included on the recognition plaque in the social hall. We need your support. The following members have generously contributed to Leadership Circle for 2012: Linda & Dr. Ira Abrahamson, Linda Albert, Ursula & Gerald Bamberger, Shirley & Everett Behrendt, Alice Berkowitz, Robert Berns, Barbara & Edwin Biron, Annette & Marvin Black, Barbara Blumfield, Eileen & Albert Bronstein, Temple Beth Israel Bulletin page 7 Rosolyn & Samuel Brott, Carol Camiener & James Herrington, Lois & Willard Cohodas, Margot & Warren Coville, Gerard Daniel, Shirley Dinkin (z l), Nancy & Rabbi Michael Eisenstat, Ruth Engman, Ellen & Joel Fedder, Judith Feldman, Mildred Field, Sharon & Herman Frankel, Elise & Jim Galinsky, Susan & Philip Gaynes, Myra & Jerome Goldstein, Ruth Gorton, Jean Green, Toby & Eugene Halpern, Joelle & Jerry Hamovit, Ilse & Curtis Hecht, Riva & Thomas Hecht, Marjorie & Martin Heller, Dorothy Jacobson & Sue Jacobson, Doris Millner Kaplan, Marty & Rabbi Jonathan Katz, Carole & Sy Klionsky, Sandra & Benjamin Krause, Ruth Lerner, Nessa & Richard Levine, Ina Rae Levy, Annie & Murray Lowenthal, Suzanne Lutkoff, Dr. David Marcus, Judith & Donald Markstein, Betty & Judge Marvin Morse, Gaby Nitkin, Pamela & Norman Reiter, Milton Richter, Margot Robinson, Vivian & Dr. Gerald Ross, Marsha Roth, Marjorie & William Sandy, Molly A. Endowment It Is Better To Give And Receive What is a charitable gift annuity? A type of gift transaction where an individual transfers assets to an entity such as a Temple Endowment Fund in exchange for a tax benefit and a lifetime income for one or more individuals.. What kind of income can an annuitant expect these days? The percent of return depends on the age of the annuitant. Here are some current rates for one person. Joint rates are available for couples. All rates are subject to change. AGE CURRENT RETURN (%) Illuminations Suppose I die before I use up my entire annuity? If your contract included your spouse, the income would continue until he/she dies. Then, Temple Beth Israel s Endowment Fund would be the recipient of the balance of your gift annuity. Just recently, two long time members of TBI passed away. Both had purchased charitable gift annuities many years ago and had been receiving regular income, and now the TBI Endowment Fund will be the recipient of the balance of their accounts. Their foresight will continue to help support Temple Beth Israel. Does this sound good to you? If so, please get in touch with Endowment chair Suzanne Lutkoff. Just leave a message in the office , and an appointment will be set up to discuss your gift annuity.

9 Temple Beth Israel Bulletin page 9 High Holy Days Challah While challah is prepared in the shape of an oval for Shabbat during the High Holy Days, the loaf is traditionally baked in a round style symbolizing wholeness and the renewing cycle of life marked by the promise of the New Year. It is also customary to make the bread in other shapes, such as a hand a reaching out in prayerful supplication, a crown suggesting God s ultimate sovereignty or a bird symbolizing hovering Divine protection. This ladder challah conveys a striving to achieve Divine nearness and favorable judgment by ascending from our sins to a higher moral path.
