2 MEET OUR NEW PRESIDENT: CHARLES ACKERMAN Charles Ackerman was installed as Temple President last March at the Annual Meeting. Before his election he served as Vice President for the Department of Services and Planning, overseeing several important committees. Since then, he has been working diligently toward activating and reactivating them. He was born and raised in Hammond, Indiana, and there ran a women s apparel business for 32 years. After they moved to Sarasota in 1988, it turned out that he and his wife Betty decided they were not exactly the retiring types. They soon set up shop in a T-shirt printing business supplying some of the nation s retailers. Later they established a wholesale apparel company where they currently work part time selling men s and women s sportswear to retail stores on the west coast of Florida. Somehow, Charles has found the time to contribute his time and energies to the community. He is a past chairman of the board of the Sarasota-Manatee Jewish Children and Family Services and served on the board for six years and was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Sarasota Manatee Jewish Federation and the Flanzer Jewish Community Center. In 2004, Charles was honored by the Jewish National Fund with the Tree of Life Award for his commitment to the community and the state of Israel. Charles and Betty, who is from Brooklyn, NY, have between them eight children and fourteen grandchildren, all of whom live on the West Coast of Florida. 3 FROM THE RABBI S STUDY... The guns have fallen silent. Rockets no longer flail the air, and bombs no longer fall. Now is the time when the debates take place in the press, in the Knesset, in the cafes of Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, and in the streets of Beirut, Cairo, Syria, Teheran, and Riyadh. The media may spin the results of the war any way they please, but they cannot deny that the leader of Hezbollah has declared that if he knew how Israel would respond to the kidnapping of two soldiers he would never have done it. The media may choose to spin it any way they please, but they cannot deny that Israel has destroyed Hezbollah s long range missiles, leaving only the ineffective Katyushas, and even they have ceased. Hezbollah is no longer the threat it posed just two months ago. The only things flying to Israel, today, are commercial jetliners as tourism has already begun reviving. Along with Israel s hitech industries, pharmaceutical industries, and magnificent agricultural industries, the tourist industry is coming alive, once again. Israel s beautiful hotels, fine restaurants, art galleries, and museums are rapidly filling up. Temple Beth Israel is planning our second TRIP TO ISRAEL. We will leave on December 3 rd and return on December 13 th. Already about a dozen members are lining up to go. We want to limit our group to about 25. I encourage you to be among the first Jews to go back to Israel and show support in this post-war era. This will be a trip that does MORE THAN SIGHTSEEING. We will meet with people with governmental experience, with SOLDIERS WHO FOUGHT IN THE WAR and MEMBERS OF THEIR FAMILIES. THE JOYOUS HOLIDAYS OF SUKKOT AND SIMCHAT TORAH After the solemn High Holidays of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, we celebrate Sukkot, a joyous holiday that has both historical and agricultural significance. Sukkot commemorates the 40 years of wandering in the desert while living in temporary shelters and it is also a harvest festival, sometimes called the Festival of the Ingathering. The word sukkot means booths, a reference to those temporary homes. One of the traditions connected with this holiday is the decorating of the sukkah. Fall fruits and vegetables are hung from the walls, with children s artwork exhibited in private sukkahs. Another important observance involves the four species comprising the lulav and the etrog. The first, the etrog, is a fruit similar to a lemon that is native to Israel. The other three are parts of the lulav: a palm branch, two willow branches, and three myrtle branches. These six branches are bound together to form the lulav that is waved in four directions north, east, south, west, up and down, symbolizing G-d s presence. One week after Sukkot is Simchat Torah, which means Rejoicing in the Torah. On this holiday, we read the last part of Deuteronomy and then proceed to the first part of Genesis (the first book of the Torah). This continuity reminds us that the Torah is a circle, never ending. Simchat Torah is a holiday of celebration in which many synagogues and communities have processions carrying the Torah, amid singing and dancing. Gloria Sabin We will also see many of the historical sites that give form to our earliest Jewish beginnings. We will pray at the Wall and we will visit the BRAND NEW SECTION at YAD VASHEM. We will get down on our hands and knees and plant trees in Israel s ancient soil. I urge you to join us and fulfill the vow that we take every year when we say: Next year in Jerusalem! Call me at Temple and tell me that you want to join Nancy and me and your fellow congregants in this exciting endeavor! B shalom, Rabbi Michael B. Eisenstat 3 Monday, November 13 at 12:30 p.m. IN MEMORIUM JAY LIEBERMAN EVELYN BRIZDLE

4 BETH ISRAEL WOMEN Shalom: I hope it s the beginning of a very happy New Year for everyone. A skeleton committee consisting of Anita DeVine, Arlene Krum, Doris White and myself have been busy laying the groundwork for an interesting and involved year for our many members. Although we got great response for our membership, if you have not paid dues for this year, we would appreciate receiving them within the month so that we can keep you on our active list. With all of our events where there is a charge, we will charge more if you are not a member, so other than supporting all of the national WOMEN OF REFORM JUDAISM projects, it is to your advantage to be a member. We will be having more lunches, our wonderful fashion show in January, an evening at the Ballet and a bus trip and lunch to the Holocaust Museum in St. Petersburg. We will also be having our Hanukah Happenings in December. Information will be forthcoming within the next month on many of these events. None of this happens without volunteers, and if BIW is to continue, we need support now. I ask that you give this thought and let us know that you are willing to help at some level on some event. It is much easier for you to call us than for us to guess who would like to become involved. Again, a great year! Leah Barker, President BIW JUDAICA SHOP While cleaning your closets and bookshelves, the BIW is planning for our annual Hanukkah Happening. Bring your Pink Elephant items or new or gently used items for our Pink Elephant sale. The Library is now accepting all books and audio books on tape or CD for donation toward their annual book sale during the Hanukkah Happening. Volunteers Needed Our wonderful merchandise almost sells itself, but not completely. Give us a hand -- short hours, excellent working conditions. 6 IN HONOR OF JOE MILLER AND MAYE LAVINSON This month we honor two of the most hard working and dedicated Temple members who have given many years of service in a variety of activities to our Temple, Joe Miller and Maye Lavinson. Joe Miller is the embodiment of the word dedication. Since becoming a member about 15 years ago, he has served on the Ritual Committee, the Shiva Committee and as Chairman of the Ushers Committee being on hand with the members of his committee for every religious service to help seat congregants. He has coordinated Bimah honors and assisted with High Holy Day honors as well. By his own admission, he knows more Temple members than anyone else, and by his persuasive personality has brought in at least a dozen new members. Thanks, Joe! Where Maye Lavinson is concerned, whenever a task needs doing, she can be counted on to answer the call. During the past summer season she was particularly active, assisting Bob Chalphin in arranging and organizing the variety of planned social activities as well as planning the three summer Friday Shabbat dinners in restaurants outside of the Temple. Through her tireless efforts, the dinners in all attracted a total of 150 members and guests. Maye is president of Women On Our Own (WOOO), which will be celebrating its 8 th anniversary in October. WOOO, following Maye s lead. is encouraged to help where there is a need. Maye s smiling face is the first face you usually see when you enter the Temple on a Friday night, when she greets all comers and hands out programs. Maye and her WOOO members can be seen after services during Oneg Shabbat pitching in to pour coffee and tea. As a member of the Temple Membership Committee, Maye s enthusiasm and salesmanship have brought in numerous new members over the years, one more reason to honor her. Additionally, she has served on the Gala Committee and the Continuing Education Committee, helping with Mini-Versity preparations. Maye Lavinson is one of a kind, and we salute her. 6 MINI-VERSITY CATALOGUE PREVIEW Plans are in the works for the coming season s Mini-Versity. Here is a sampling of sessions to come: Rabbi Michael Eisenstat will be offering a class dealing with The Jewish Gymnasium exercising the Jewish mind. Rabbi Peter Kasdan will discuss The Jewish Life-Cycle What we Need to Know About our Grandchildren and Ourselves: Beginnings and Endings. Bob Waxman will teach Kabbalah 101. Diane Steinbrink will present All the World s a Stage about notable Jewish playwrights. Rabbi Richard Steinbrink will discuss Reform Judaism in America: Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow. Dr. Jerome Rosenthal will discuss The Failure to Save the Jews Why both the Jewish Leadership and the Roosevelt Administration didn t do more to save European Jewry from destruction in these critical years. Kevin Costello will return to share insight into Jewish artists, 19 th Century into the 21 st Century. This program will include an art exhibition of Jewish artists from the Ringling School of Design. Also in the works is a program to discuss the rising trend of anti-semitism on American college campuses and, of course, the popular Bible Commentary Series. Earl Gordon, Chairman, Mini-Versity Series WOMEN ON OUR OWN WOOO CELEBRATES 8 TH ANNIVERSARY On October 18, 2006, Women On Our Own (WOOO) will celebrate their 8 th anniversary at the Colony Beach Club on 1301 Gulf of Mexico Drive at 12:00 noon, with a festive luncheon for those members who have paid their dues. The organization was formed by a group of women who felt there was a need to bring together other women who were alone and who had lost their husbands or mates. A function of WOOO is to plan a variety of social activities that can be enjoyed by all. Another function, according to President Maye Lavinson, is to serve as an integral adjunct to the Temple and to provide support where needed. WOOO currently has 30 members. Annual dues are $10.00, and anyone who wants to attend the luncheon and become a member may call Maye Lavinson at or Treasurer Dorrace Zucker at Other officers include Betty Salenger, vice president; Pearl Gurewitz, communications; Eleanor Lipson, sunshine lady.
