3 Temple Beth Israel Bulletin page 3 From the Rabbi s Study A Discovery of Family History Once, as a guest in someone s home, the Baal Shem Tov intended to go from part of the dwelling to another but inadvertently opened the door to the cellar. He reached out to touch the mezuzah but quickly stopped. He then called his host over and said, This mezuzah should be checked. (Mezuzahs need to be examined every few years because the inked letters can be abraded or even come to touch each other due to shrinkage of the klaf, the parchment on which they are written.) The host replied, Rabbi, just because you opened the wrong door, does that mean you need to justify your mistake by questioning the religious validity of my mezuzah? Maybe you just accidentally opened the door? The Baal Shem Tov then famously replied, There are no accidents. In other words, his inadvertence must have carried a higher purpose. Or, as Herbert Weiner wrote in Nine and a Half Mystics, probably the most widely read book on Jewish mysticism, The phenomena of life are linked not only in the horizontal chain of cause and effect postulated by science, but are even more deeply involved with forces of causation from above. I thought about there being no accidents, that there are certain beshert, meant to be moments that defy rational explanation, when my sister recently shared a story about her daughter Nancy Cohen, a senior at American University in Washington, D.C. Last fall, she enrolled in a course called Oral Histories of the Civil Rights Movement, taught by the legendary civil rights leader, Julian Bond. One of her assignments required conducting an oral history with an individual active in the Civil Rights Movement. Knowing her hometown (and mine) of Cincinnati had experienced riots in the 1960s, Nancy hoped to interview someone from there. Her mother wasn t overly optimistic because several leaders she was aware of had passed on or else would be difficult to reach. However, she eventually shared the name of a somewhat younger but well known local pastor, the Reverend Damon Lynch, who I myself recalled growing up but did not know. My sister, who didn t personally know him either, wasn t even sure he still resided in Cincinnati. But my niece succeeded in reaching the pastor through his church and he agreed to participate in the oral history. Their subsequent phone conversation took a surprising turn when the pastor began to describe the role some Jewish leaders had played during the turbulence of the mid 60s. At one point he asked Nancy if she d ever heard of Rabbi Katz. Startled and excited, she burst out, He was my grandfather! The pastor was equally stunned. He went on to describe how Rabbi Robert L. Katz, a longtime professor at Cincinnati s Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, worked closely with African- American leaders to help restore stability in the city and strengthen relationships between the African- American and Jewish communities. According to the pastor, on one occasion they all met in our family s home. All of this was news to my sister and me. We knew that both our parents were very concerned about improving racial relations. My mother, in fact, played a vital role in founding one of the first integrated private swim clubs in the nation. However, we had no idea our father had taken such an active and important role himself. Was this a random connection or a beshert, there are no accidents moment occasioned from on high? It is hard for my sister and me not to think so. Thanks to Nancy going to college in Washington, receiving an assignment from one of our country s foremost civil rights leaders, and then happening to interview a Cincinnati pastor we had only heard of, a previously unknown chapter in our family s history was revealed. It certainly felt like a gift from above.

6 February 2014 page 6 The Rabbi Michael B. Eisenstat Miniversity of Judaism at Temple Beth Israel Rabbis Forum: Where Is The American Jewish Commnity Headed Tuesday February 4 at 2 pm A recent, widely disseminated Pew poll revealed that the non-orthodox American Jewish community is becoming increasingly defused and indifferent. A panel of local rabbis discusses whether or not this is actually true, the role Israel plays in American Jewish self-perception, and how Jews may not so much be disappearing but, rather, reassessing and recalibrating what it means to be Jewish in America today. When Bad Things Happen To Good People: The Book Of Job (In The Hebrew Bible) Dr. Jerome C. Rosenthal Wednesday, February 5, 12, 19 & 26 at 2 pm Nearly everyone has had the experience of seeing a loved one, a dear friend or a favorite celebrity die young from an accident or disease and wondered then how unjust and unfair that seemed - that is, when bad things happen to good people. The Book of Job is a moving story about a similarly unfortunate situation when Job, a widely acknowledged righteous and good person, is suddenly afflicted with terrible, calamitous suffering that included the loss of his ten children, his home, all his material wealth and even his health. The book is one of the most beautifully written and challenging books in the Bible. The deep emotions almost leap from the pages that describe his awful experience. His suffering seems totally undeserved to Job and others and he stubbornly protests to his friends and to God that he did nothing to justify his fate. Job's demands from God for an explanation of his suffering and the issue of whether he was truly undeserving, present a basic challenge to Jewish traditional thinking on the subject of God's role in human suffering..the challenge to a 3000 year tradition that said good people are rewarded (not punished) with blessings for their exemplary living; that God always acts justly and does not make mistakes created a tense major issue that eventually pushed that tradition to a more modern, rational view. The challenge presented with Job's case is that perhaps God sometimes acts unjustly or does make mistakes or cannot always know all the facts of every situation or cannot control every natural disaster that takes a toll of innocent human life - was quite radical, even blasphemous;and it was considered to be in contradiction of it. Come learn more about Job's defense and how God finally answered his protestations. You are sure to have some ideas you will want to air and want to add to the discussions of the many questions that will be raised as the material is covered. Also, you may very well change your mind about the subject of when bad things happen to good people. 50 Children: The Rescue Mission of Mr. & Mrs. Kraus Thursday, February 6, 7pm Narrated by Alan Alda and Mamie Grummer, 50 Children: The Rescue Mission of Mr. and Mrs. Kraus tells the previously unknown, harrowing story of how this American Jewish couple, through tremendous courage, smarts, chutzpah and resolve was able to save fifty Jewish children from the fires of the Holocaust. One of last children to be taken out and prominently featured in the film is Helga Milberg, mother of TBI member David Milberg. Helga passed away only hours after seeing a special pre-released copy of the film. David will speak following the film about his mother and the Krauses. Through a generous gift, the film is open to all at no charge.

To be included, simply fill out the form in this month s Bulletin. And if you know of someone who is too shy, too modest or too darn busy to fill out the form, go ahead and turn them in! The same information also can be ed to Kathy Brooks at kbrks@comcast.net. A Valentine for TBI Well, this is not your usual valentine. I sat at my trusty old laptop for a long time trying to come up with something to send to the editor for this Bulletin. What could I do to raise some funds for our Endowment Fund? How could I tie something into Valentine s Day? I could sell roses... but where and when could I do this? I just couldn t picture standing in the lobby on Shabbat with my flowers for sale... nah! That wouldn t do. But how about chocolate? Everybody likes candy. But no, we are all watching our weight; not a good idea. But wait create and sell gift baskets. Not so easy too much running around to collect all that stuff. And how would I deliver them? Too many problems! Then I thought of selling raffle tickets to something everybody wants. But the more I thought about it the more I realized that our members are constantly bombarded with fundraising mail that goes directly into the recycle bin. Valentine s Day clearly wasn t helping me. So, the best I can do for this Bulletin is to send my heartfelt love to our Temple Beth Israel and along with my love attach a check to the Endowment Fund; much easier than selling gift baskets! And I can hope that maybe there are others out there who would like to send a similar valentine to TBI through the Endowment Fund. Suzanne Lutkoff, chair Endowment Fund Lunch with the Rabbi Thursday, February 13 12:00 pm Speaker: Attorney Ira Weisner Topic: Elder Law Lunch catered by Toojays Season Subscription....$50 Individual Sessions.$12 each At the Door... $15 each Lunch with the Rabbi, sponsored by the Men s Club, is open to all TBI members and meets the 2nd Thursday of each month.
