Submissions for the January/February 2018 issue are due no later than November 15. for more information. A Letter From Our Rabbi THE ETHICAL LIFE What is the essence of Judaism? Is it prayer and worship, perhaps so because we wish to come closer to God? Is it study and learning, perhaps so because we wish to discover faith? Is it repair of the world, for there can be nothing more urgent than using our strength and resources to help the suffering? Indeed, each of these practices has its place. Yet, the strongest argument may be that the essence of Judaism is to live a life devoted to goodness, to being a good person in our actions and our thoughts. All of Jewish life is a preparation for the ultimate human condition to develop our lives into a symphony of goodness. Toward that end, the study of ethics is a priority in Judaism. A Jewish examination of ethics takes into account the values of Torah and the wisdom of the Talmudic sages and their intellectual and spiritual heirs. The study of ethics from a Jewish perspective strives to examine critical, current issues from the lens of Jewish teaching. The Jewish Theological Seminary has produced a truly outstanding curriculum for adults to engage in the study of ethics from a uniquely Jewish perspective. Here s how the course is described: From political and financial scandals to rapid progress in biomedical science and technology, the complex issues of modern society are, at their core, issues of ethical and moral concern. Now more than ever, we require a solid understanding of how Jewish ethics can inform our discussions and decisions about the critical questions of the day. Judaism has a long history of wrestling with moral questions, responding to them in a way that considers all sides of an issue. The course, which includes video presentations by JTS faculty members, as well as short videos featuring people who grapple with ethical challenges in their professional work, is being offered at Oheb Shalom. Participants will be able to access all course materials online, including videos. The course will be offered in eight sessions, four on Monday night and four on Shabbat morning from November through March. The Monday night sessions will be streamed online for those who cannot be physically present at the synagogue. The Shabbat morning sessions will take place shortly after the start of the Kiddush luncheon (videos will be shown at the Monday sessions but not on Shabbat). The topics are varied and interesting, and are presented independent of each other so that participants can attend sessions selectively. Participants will be invited to vote on which topics will be covered. Ethical issues that will be offered for study include: food production; fracking; mass incarceration; modern-day slavery; torture and war; end-of-life care; disabilities and inclusion; physical enhancement; and lying. I do hope that you will join me for what promises to be a stimulating and important time of learning and discussion. 2

3 The Cantor s Corner In September I wrote about the urgency of poetic, inspirational speech to counter a barrage of vapidity and fear. I urged you to make this synagogue a true sanctuary for yourself, a place for reflection and calm. Now I ask you to take another step: the best way to improve the quality of your own life is to do something meaningful for another. I hope that is one of the reasons that you joined this synagogue. There are an abundance of articles about the stress of long-term caregiving, and in no way do I mean to minimize this challenge. But there is, thankfully, another part of this equation: giving promotes deep and lasting satisfaction. If we are blessed not to be busy offering daily care to someone we love, then we have the opportunity to support the caregiver. We can check in regularly. We can do a useful errand, or visit. Think of shiva as a model. The most important thing in shiva is to show up and listen carefully to what the mourner needs. But if you really want to make a difference in someone s life, you do that again the following week. And the following month. You let the person know that you haven t forgotten their pain. You brainstorm and help solve problems. You stay connected. It has been long-documented that people who care for others are more likely to remain vital. The Berlin Study of 2016 demonstrated that not only did the volunteer assistance of elders benefit those around them, but those who took on a caregiving role lived significantly longer than those who did not. It did not matter if they were helping their family or their community, or how they chose to do so. The only important factor seemed to be that they were easing the burdens of those they cared about. In the Holocaust, many of those who survived the camps reported that they endured in order to care for another. Studies of women at that time showed despite the advantage of remaining invisible to the authorities, women created networks of protection. Small groups, composed of a couple or threesome of friends, relatives, or older women, came together to form large groups that protected a girl or girls younger than them. (Judith Tydor Baumel, Double Jeopardy: Gender and the Holocaust) And if you read the stories online of rescuers as recounted by the Jewish Foundation for the Righteous, you will be amazed and inspired. Isn t this whom we aspire to be? I am proud that Oheb Shalom has a long history of activism, providing substantial food support, school supplies, backpacks, books, and the resources for resettlement of refugees. Given the outrageous economic disparities of our society, we need to redouble our efforts and generosity. But I am also asking you to give of yourself. Roll up your sleeves and find out where you re needed. Give at least one day every month. Be the person who checks in regularly on a congregant who is house-bound. Why? Because we are blessed. Because we are Jews. Because we are responsible. Because we are Oheb Shalom. 4 Education Director / Zeman School The Zeman School year is off to an amazing start! Thanks to all of our students, parents, madrichim, and faculty for starting the year off on the right foot! We had a fabulous opening day, a successful trip to Eden Village Camp, an inspiring Sukkot decorating program, as well as shaking the lulav and etrog in the Sukkah. We are looking forward to more fun and exciting programs throughout the year. Here are some important dates to remember: December 12 - It s A Wrap! Rabbi will lead 6th and 7th grade students and parents in putting on Tefillin and saying the appropriate blessings. December 16 - Oheb Shalom Congregational Hanukkah Party December 17-7th Grade Trip to Tenement Museum Live Show! Meet the residents of 97 Orchard Street and explore multiple apartments in the Tenement Museum an experience not available on any other tour. Connect to the experience of living in the building by interacting with actors portraying members of the Moore (1868), Levine (1898), and Baldizzi (1935) families. The program is a special opportunity to learn about the daily lives of these residents and how their hopes and aspirations intersected with an ever-changing Lower East Side. December 17 - Zeman School Hanukkah Celebration Wishing everyone a Happy Hanukkah! Mike Dorfman, Director of Education mikedorfman@ohebshalom.org KINDERGARTNERS ENJOYING THEIR FIRST DAY OF ZEMAN SCHOOL! Nursery School News It s my favorite time of year! Thanksgiving and Hanukkah all around the same time! The children have been busy collecting food for our food drive. The classes are all involved in bringing in food and dropping it in our bin. Each class is also making a special treat for its Thanksgiving feast. The hallways smell yummy!!! The rooms are decorated with beautiful holiday decorations. Hanukkah is also being celebrated at Mickey Fried. The classrooms are filled with decorations. Each child in the preschool made his/her own menorahs to use at home. I love seeing the creativity of each child. The teachers have worked very hard teaching the kids the story of Hanukkah. It s so great to listen to them retell it. We made our own latkes and Hanukkah cookies. During Shabbat time, we sang Hanukkah songs and spun like dreidels. The kids have also practiced Hanukkah songs with our music teacher, Ronnie. We wish everyone a Happy and Healthy Holiday season! Sloane Goldstein, Director, Mickey Fried Preschool 4

6 November is a favorite month for me as we host Thanksgiving. The fireplace gets crackling and the extended family comes in. There is no school or work the next day and everyone is relaxed unless they were caught up in traffic. There is no religion involved and we just enjoy each other for who we are, play silly games, laugh, and thank our lucky stars that we are together another year. Hope you too will enjoy your time with family and friends. Then after the turkey leftovers are finished it is time for another First Friday Night on December 1, and Miriam Sisterhood is the sponsor. I look forward to seeing you there. Mae Zelikow Book Reviews continue to happen on the first Tuesday in November and December. Then it will take a winter hiatus until March. Sylvia Amato is the chair of this group. Hold Saturday, February 24 for Miriam Sisterhood Shabbat and sign up and get your part now! Remember to support our ongoing fundraising. Buy your Thanksgiving and Hanukkah dinners by using your grocery gift cards to ShopRite and Kings; reach out to Michelle Bobrow and Edye Kramer for your cards. Check the directory for contact information. And the Judaica Shop is open every Sunday during Hebrew school. December 3 we will have a Hanukkah sale, please stop by!! Check your s for messages about upcoming programs, notes, etc. If you are not getting one, please miriamsisterhood@gmail.com and you will be added to the list. May we go from strength to strength. 7 Men s Club Shalom Oheb, On behalf of the Oheb Shalom Men s Club, I want to belatedly wish you and yours a Shana Tovah. As we cruise through the early days of 5778, we have already had several successful events. We hope you attended, and if you didn t, well, you missed out but it s never too late to come to your first event of the year. We kicked off our schedule with a very successful (despite the play of the Jets) tailgate party with Oheb alum Rafi Kohan as our halftime guest speaker discussing our sports-crazy culture. Don t miss his excellent new book, The Arena. Our always-popular Scotch in the Sukkah event was particularly meaningful as it was the first one in the new Sukkah provided by the Men s Club and Sisterhood. As always, setting up the Sukkah for Oheb was a great group effort by our team. Here s what s coming up: On November 12 we have the annual Silver Lake Cemetery Clean-up mitzvah project; all are encouraged to join us men, women, kids, dogs, probably not babies. On November 15, we have the annual Kiddush Cup Tri- Shul bowling night, where we hope to improve on last year s second place finish. On a Sunday night as yet to be determined in January, we will have our poker tournament fundraiser, and later in 2018 we have yellow candle deliveries for Yom Hashoah, our Men s Club Shabbat on April 28, and we will again be cooking massive amounts of pancakes for the Zeman crowd on the last day of that school year. We hope to add a few more events big and small to flesh out that schedule, and look to our new leadership, due to be elected in November, to lead us to more success. If you have not yet paid your dues, they re a bargain at $50 and can be given to Sam Gruer. Your dues give the Men s Club the funds to do more good for the Oheb community, and to fund lox at our popular Sunday morning meetings that take place about once a month. Please join us there to pitch ideas for new events, or just to nosh and hang out. For a schedule of those meetings and all of our other upcoming events, please sign up for our s by dropping me a line at aneusner@gmail.com. See you soon at a Men s Club event! Andy Neusner, Men s Club President aneusner@gmail.com Mae Zelikow Book Review The Mae Zelikow Book Review will meet on Tuesday, November 7, at 2:00 pm. Susan Blackburn will review The Weight of Ink by Rachel Kadish. On Tuesday, December 5, at 2:00 pm, Michelle Bobrow will review Mr. Rosenblum Dreams in English by Natasha Solomons. Come and enjoy. 7 Sylvia Amato, Chair Mae Zelikow Book Review

8 Lif e long L ea r ning Earlier this summer we held a survey about adult programming at Oheb Shalom. Based on those results it was decided that, to best serve our adult learning community, we would merge the JLE and Simcha Seniors programs under one umbrella called Lifelong Learning. We were excited by the enthusiasm of those who attended the Unetaneh Tokef program in September, and we hope you ll join us for one (or more) of the exciting events we have planned. To whet your appetite (no pun intended well maybe just a little), the annual Rabbi Alexander Shapiro Memorial Breakfast and Lecture is scheduled for November 5. This year s signature event, sponsored by the Feinberg family, will feature Dr. Benjamin Sommer, Bible professor at JTS. Previously a fellow at Hebrew University, NYU Law School, and the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem, Dr. Sommer is the recipient of several awards, including the Goldstein-Goren Book Award (2016), the Salo Wittmayer Baron prize (1999), and the Award for Excellence in the Study of Religion (2009). Among his many publications are Jewish Concepts of Scripture: A Comparative Introduction, The Bodies of God and the World of Ancient Israel, and his most recent book, Revelation and Authority: Sinai in Jewish Scripture and Tradition. This year s Shapiro Lecture topic, Jews Had Slaves? Making Sense of Morally Challenging Passages in the Bible, promises to be thought-provoking. On a lighter note, we will also be hosting Dr. Nily Shiryon, Israeli psychologist and educator, to speak on the Psychology of Jewish Humor on December 3. Dr. Shiryon is in private practice in Ra anana and was formerly a producer, writer, and broadcaster for Israeli and Jewish programming at KQED FM National Public Radio affiliate in San Francisco. In addition, she has worked in psychiatric hospitals and clinics in both the U.S. and Israel. She holds double bachelor degrees in Education and Broadcast Communications and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology. See you this fall! 12 Library News WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW As I write this, destruction from nature and from man are in the news: hurricanes, bombings, violent demonstrations, killings. The beginning of a new secular year seems to be a good time to think about and read about how we relate to those in the world around us. We can t do much to prevent natural disasters except try to prepare for them and then respond with full hearts afterwards, but we can do something about interpersonal relationships. The best place to start is with our young- our children- through example and through appealing stories. Try sharing some of the following with the children in your lives. 13 Social Action Committee The mission of the Social Action Committee is to provide an opportunity for all congregants to engage in tikkun olam (repairing the world) during the year. Our annual Blood Drive in memory of Aviva Bearg in September resulted in the highest donor turnout in Oheb Shalom history since 2010! Thank you to all of our donors. Your contribution truly saves lives! The Social Action Committee s work centers on the theme of food justice this year. This is a pressing social need that offers many avenues for exploration, learning, and action. Focusing on a single theme and need for the year will deepen our understanding and engagement with this important cause. We will attempt to address the issue of food justice from a variety of angles including: food and water scarcity, environmental concerns of food production and consumption; as well as food consumption as a health issue. Please look out for announcements of our upcoming activities including: Volunteering at the Community Food Bank December 10th Habitat for Humanity Date TBD We will also continue to support our Syrian refugee families and gun violence prevention through advocacy and action. We have a wonderful committee, and invite new members to join us. Also, if you have a passion for a particular social action cause, we would be happy to help support your project.
