5 The 2018 Combined Jewish Women s Organizations Annual Meeting featuring Presented by his daughter Woody s daughter, Nora Guthrie discusses the artistic implications of Woody s relationship with his Jewish mother-in-law, Yiddish poet Aliza Greenblatt. 6 The Humanitarian Committee would like to wish everyone a healthy and peaceful Thank you to Everyone that donated to our Annual Winter Gear for Bootstraps in December. Thank you to Joan Fine for delivering them. The Humanitarian Committee Many of our regular Shul attendees will be leaving for Florida within the next few weeks, it would be greatly appreciated if folks who usually don t attend on either Saturday or Sunday could make an effort to help out with a minyan. Another thank you to Fred & Sandy Stark for all their hard work making our fundraiser at British Beer Company a HUGE success. We raised a whopping $1415 which included a very kind and generous donation from owner Gary Simon, son of our own Sandy & Stan. DONATIONS TO THE JEWISH FOOD PANTRY Paper Goods, Peanut Butter, Tuna & ***Kosher Vegetarian Soup & ***Brown Rice & Dried Beans.are NEEDED to go to Kosher Food Pantry. Food donations (MUST BE KOSHER). This is a wonderful way to give back to our community, especially during the cold Winter months. Thank you to Francine Black who brings our items to the Food Pantry every month. Please remember to CHECK EXPIRATION DATES before you bring items to the Shul. Bins are located upstairs in the vestibule and downstairs in the back of the Herbster Social Hall. Thank you. 7 CONGREGATION SONS OF ISRAEL MEN S CLUB Will meet on Wednesday the 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th & 31st of January at 9:00am, all at the Shul. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Congregation Sons of Israel Men's Club meets every Wednesday morning at 9:00 am in the Herbster Social Hall. Each week the club has an abbreviated weekday morning service followed by breakfast and a lively discussion. The discussion is often led by Rabbi Nechemiah Schusterman of Chabad of the North Shore. Weekly dues, which are two dollars per week are used to purchase items that the Shul needs or sometimes donated to a local charity. Please join us on any Wednesday morning. Cancellation of Shul Services Due to Inclement Weather The following procedures are put into place to ensure the safety of our congregants: *Once a decision has been made to cancel a Friday night or Saturday/Sunday service, an broadcast is sent to all Shul members as well as posted on the Facebook page. *The information is submitted to the local television stations (Channels 4, 5, 7 and Fox) *Updated information is recorded on the Shul answering machine at Page 7

Please contact Barry Lischinsky at ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ On Sunday, December 17th, 2017 Members of Jewish War Veterans (JWV) North Shore Post 220 and the Ladies Auxiliary (JWVA) invited Guest Speaker Mr. Arthur Bernstein to their Monthly Meeting held at Congregation Sons of Israel, Peabody, Massachusetts. Approximately thirty-six (36) Members attended the lecture. Mr. Bernstein was born in Boston, Massachusetts of Ashkenazi parents. After serving in the Merchant Marines Mr. Bernstein then served as the Captain of Record of the Ulan Vessel. The Ulan was one of several Vessels that sailed in the Aliyah Bet Operation. The mission of Aliyah Bet Operation was to relocate thousands of World War ll Jewish Refugees from Europe to a new homeland. Mr. Bernstein told the audience about the long journey at sea and the encounters that he, his crew and the Jewish Refugees experienced during their travel. Mr Bernstein s remarkable journey and the Aliyah Bet Operation are recorded in the Book titled: The Jews Secret Fleet by Joseph M Hochstein and Murray S. Greenfield. Page 8
