2 QUOTE OF THE WEEK UPCOMING BIRTHDAYS November 26th November 30th November 30 th Marjorie Maher Vince Durnan Ann Thomsen CAN YOU FIND IT! This is the first time that no one has identified the photo! There were two wrong answers --- it was not taken in the elevator. Let me give you two big hints: It is on the first floor and you should be sure to look down! And a bonus hint: It is not behind closed doors.. Please put your answers in the Suggestion Box! Page 2

3 JOKE OF THE WEEK King Arthur and the Witch: Young King Arthur was ambushed and imprisoned by the monarch of a neighboring kingdom. The monarch could have killed him but was moved by Arthur's youth and ideals. So, the monarch offered him his freedom so long as he could answer a difficult question. Arthur would have a year to figure out the answer and, if after a year, he still had no answer, he would be put to death. The question was "What do women really want?" Such a question would perplex even the most knowledgeable man and, to young Arthur, it seemed an impossible query. But, since it was better than death, he accepted the monarch's proposition to have an answer by year's end. He returned to his kingdom and began to poll everyone: the princess, the priests, the wise men and even the court jester. He spoke with everyone, but no one could give him a satisfactory answer. Many people advised him to consult the old witch, for only she would have the answer. But the price would be high; as the witch was famous throughout the kingdom for the exorbitant prices she charged. The last day of the year arrived, and Arthur had no choice but to talk to the witch. She agreed to answer the question, but he would have to agree to her price first. The old witch wanted to marry Sir Lancelot, the most noble of the Knights of the Round Table and Arthur's closest friend! Young Arthur was horrified. She was hunchbacked and hideous, had only one tooth, smelled like sewage, made obscene noises, etc. He had never encountered such a repugnant creature in all his life. He refused to force his friend to marry her and endure such a terrible burden; but Lancelot, learning of the proposal, spoke with Arthur He said nothing was too big of a sacrifice compared to Arthur's life and the preservation of the Round Table. Hence, a wedding was proclaimed and the witch answered Arthur's question thus: What a woman really wants, she answered is to be in charge of her own life. Everyone in the kingdom instantly knew that the witch had uttered a great truth and that Arthur's life would be spared. And so it was, the neighbouring monarch granted Arthur his freedom, and Lancelot Page 3

4 and the witch had a wonderful wedding. The honeymoon hour approached and Lancelot, steeling himself for a horrific experience, entered the bedroom. But, what a sight awaited him. The most beautiful woman he had ever seen lay before him on the bed. The astounded Lancelot asked what had happened The beauty replied that since he had been so kind to her when she appeared as a witch, she would henceforth, be her horrible deformed self only half the time and the beautiful maiden the other half. Which would he prefer? Beautiful during the day or night? Lancelot pondered the predicament. During the day, a beautiful woman to show off to his friends, but at night, in the privacy of his castle, an old witch? Or, would he prefer having a hideous witch during the day, but by night, a beautiful woman for him to enjoy wondrous intimate moments? What would you do? What Lancelot chose is below. But, make your choice before you scroll down below. Noble Lancelot said that he would allow HER to make the choice herself. Upon hearing this, she announced that she would be beautiful all the time because he had respected her enough to let her be in charge of her own life Now, what is the moral to this story? The moral is: If you don't let a woman have her own way, Things are going to get ugly. (Special Thanks to Carolyn for sharing this with us!) Page 4

7 DINING WITH CHEF BRAD.. We are all ready planning ahead for Thanksgiving as you can see by the menu posted above. We want you to plan ahead as well and let us know as soon as possible --- but no later than Monday November 25 th if you will be joining us for Thanksgiving Dinner. Dining Forum Follow-up.. Last week we had Dining Forum for Club Members --- something that we do quarterly. It was wonderful to hear Club Members note how pleased they are with both our meals and the service. Issues and suggestions that had been raised in the past were reviewed and all noted as being successfully corrected. Some additional changes were proposed and they include adding muffins to the breakfast menu on occasion, having salad specials everyday at lunch and using more frozen vegetables. It was also suggested that we offer at least one, dinner-type special to lunch menu. It was also agreed to modify Sunday Brunch Hours which will now be from 8 to 10am for the Breakfast Menu in the Bistro with Brunch being served from 10a until 1p except for those with Reservations for whom Brunch may continue until 1:30p. (If there are no reservations for after 1p the Bistro will close at 1p). The question was raised about the possibility of providing smaller dinner portion often called petite dinners. Unfortunately so much of the cost of a meal is a function of service and preparation reducing the size of the meal would not reduce the charge to the Member by much and would not make sense. But Members do have the option of splitting meals and of requesting to the uneaten portion home doggy bag style. Last but not least I would like to thank the Members for the compliments and the standing ovation. As your Chef I would like to say it makes all the effort I put into your dining experience worth it. I enjoy the daily challenges and the rewards being your Chef Bradley Southwick, Executive Che Page 7

15 WORD OF THE WEEK Forfend \for-fend\ verb - to ward off : prevent - protect, preserve EXAMPLES The fort functioned as a place of refuge where the settlers could forfend themselves from attack. "'Sir!' Scotty sounded genuinely indignant. 'You're not suggesting that I would let any piece of equipment aboard my ship fall into disrepair, are you?' 'Heaven forfend, Scotty,' Kirk answered, successfully keeping the smile he wore from his voice." From William Leisner's 2013 book Star Trek: The Original Series: The Shocks of Adversity DID YOU KNOW? English speakers have been using "forfend" with the meanings "to forbid" and "to prevent" since the late 14th century, and the meaning "to protect" since the late 16th century. These days, however, the "forbid" sense is considered archaic; we only use it (as in our second example) in phrases like "heaven forfend" or "God forfend." "Forfend" comes from "for-" (an old prefix meaning "so as to involve prohibition, exclusion, omission, failure, neglect, or refusal") and Middle English "fenden" (a shorter variant of "defenden," meaning "to defend"). 20 FRIDAY NIGHT AT THE MOVIES PRESENTS: THE ODD LIFE OF TIMOTHY GREEN 7:00 in the Community Room Please Note the Earlier Time!!!!! Through flashbacks and other nonlinear devices, director Richard Attenborough recounts comic icon Charlie Chaplin's (Robert Downey Jr.) poignant journey through triumph, failure, infamy and government persecution. The large cast of characters includes George Hayden (Anthony Hopkins), Douglas Fairbanks (Kevin Kline) and Chaplin's mentally unbalanced mother (Geraldine Chaplin). Downey's performance earned both Oscar and Golden Globe nominations. I love Robert Downey, Jr. and "Chaplin" is his masterpiece. In this beautiful epic superbly directed by Richard Attenborough, Chaplin comes alive and we see boy and man with all his foibles, naivety and brilliance. A man who wanted to make people laugh and do it in ways that were way ahead of his time. Downey has every move and nuance down pat and you believe you are seeing Chaplin. The entire cast is extraordinary and the film is presented in many different formats which make it so unique. The costumes and makeup are incredible as Chaplin ages...he was a tireless perfectionist, proud of his adopted country of America but distrusted by J. Edgar Hoover. He was ultimately exiled and 20 years later he was invited back to California for an Honorary Oscar. I had the pleasure of seeing that particular broadcast and I cried then as I cried when I witnessed Downey's reenactment. Exceptional film with joy and heartache...the story of one of our greatest Treasures Page 20

21 AGING WELL IS ALSO A NEWSPAPER COLUMN! Every other Saturday the Laconia Citizen publishes our Newspaper Column that usually has something to do with aging issues --- But you can also find it on our Facebook Page, on our Website or just by asking for copy. I can also add you to an list if you would like a copy sent to you automatically. The most recent column is entitled Are You a Classic and explores the difference between being older and being classic or even vintage.. CLOSING NOTES. The Library Book has been returned Thank You! Welcome To John & Jane Chandler! (no relation!) Up in 308 at the end of hall you will find two recent additions to the MBCC Family --- John and Jane Chandler who have joined us from Hill New Hampshire. It must have been years ago now that we had our first discussions Everything in its own time! Hanukkah This year is wonderfully unusual in that the Jewish Holiday of Hanukkah coincides with Thanksgiving for the first time since 1918 and will not do so again until For most of us this officially qualifies as a once in a lifetime opportunity --- although there are those among us of a certain age 95+ that were around the first time! (I won t tell who..) Hanukkah (also spelled as Chanukah and as Chanukkah) is also known as the Festival of Lights and is celebrated as an eight-day Holiday beginning this year this Wednesday evening. The Holiday is observed by lighting an additional candle each night for eight nights in a special candelabra called a Menorah. Note that the ninth candle the Shamash is used to light the others. And so it is that as we wish each other a Happy Thanksgiving --- we also want to wish to our Jewish Friends a very Happy Hanukkah as well! Page 21

22 A Poem, A Pray, A Thanksgiving Day Reflection We are each part of a journey A Journey to find or build a home Our journeys have before long before we were born and they will not end till long after we re gone Today we may see from where we have come And to see where we are called to go And to welcome and thank those around us who join us on the way. The above shared with us by a Member who also added her own well placed touches! It reminded her of MBCC --- as it does for me as well. Don t forget to invite your Family and Friends for the Holiday Lights event on Wednesday December 4 th at 4p! There is no escaping winter --- as I write this (Sunday night) the wind is howling and we have a dusting of snow ---- This is the kind of weather that helps to make New Englanders so resilient. Please do be careful if you head out here or anywhere else --- a fall is something to avoid at all costs! Best Wishes to You and to Your Families --- and whether or not you are able to gather with your own Family this Thanksgiving I hope that you know that you also have this wonderful MBCC Family as well! Even if you are away from your Family, you will not be alone and you will not be without Family! And for all of our Jewish Members, Staff and Friends I want to wish you a wonderful and happy start to Hanukkah! And to All: May You Have a Very Special Thanksgiving! Howie Page 22
