The classes will be run live via teleconference and allow the audience to interact with Rabbi Spitz in real time. 4 Sholosh Seudot Halacha Discussion R Zilberstein was once consulted by a religious surgeon, who handled delicate operations that required intense concentration and perfect calm. He was a heavy smoker, and would always smoke a cigarette to calm his nerves before-hand. Often he was summoned to the hospital on Shabbos to perform life saving operations. He felt that if he were able to smoke before the operation on Shabbos, as he did during the week, he would perform them better. Is it permitted for him to smoke on Shabbos for the sake of pikuach nefesh? What was the final conclusion? 5 Profiles This week we continuewith yet another special edition of PROFILES. This week we spotlight the TCS Annual Dinner and our superstar event planners Joelle Stein and Leora Mandel. TCS: Are you excited for the upcoming annual dinner. It seems as if they only happen once a year. TCS editor: That is why they call it the annual dinner genius. TCS:Well I am excited. Do you have tickets? TCS Editor: Not yet. Trying to see if I can find a date. TCS: You haven t had a date since the beginning of the Trudeau administration. We are talking Pierre. TCS editor: It has been a bit of slow period. TCS: You don t need a date. Besides, do you really want 250 shul members critiquing your date? Hang out with me. Mrs. TCS is heading oversees so I am also solo. Joelle: Can we get started? There is tons to do and the tickets are not selling by themselves. TCS: So where are you on the meltdown meter at this stage in the planning? Leora:We are in moderate panic mode. At least we are further along in the planning than we were yesterday. TCS: Do you have a good feel for where you should be at this stage based on past years? Joelle:We have done at least four dinners together. We have a good sense of what should be done by a given point in time and what remains to be done. Leora: Most importantly, we are calmer than we have been in previous years. TCS: What have you learned over the years? Joelle:For starters that we work well together. Leora: We are laughing when we don t kill each other. Joelle: Let s be clear, we laugh more than we kill. TCS: Anything else. Joelle: People don t read their s. TCS: What prior experience made you the ideal candidates to run the show? Joelle: I have dabbled in event planning in the past. I am not professionally trained but I am very organized, logical and creative. Leora: And she can has the rare ability to be soft and encouraging but be forceful when needed. Joelle: You do what you have to do.

6 Leora: I have done AISH teas. TCS: As in Japanese tea ceremonies? Those are very intricate and detailed. Leora: No just regular teas. TCS: So you just serve tea? Seems simple. Do you also serve coffee? Leora: No just tea. TCS: Sounds like a waitress job rather than an event-planning gig. Let s move on and talk about this year s theme. Joelle:We have chosen Jerusalem of Gold to coincide with Israel s70 th birthday. Miriam is the ATCS JWRP city leader who brings women s missions to Israel. Additionally, she does follow-up back home. Leora:Ezra is a documentarist and advocate for the communities in Judea and Samaria and has a true love for Israel. TCS: How do you go about choosing the theme and honorees? Leora: Nobody embraces being honored. But we encourage worthy recipients and lay on the guilt. Joelle:We start thinking after the chagim and then it takes months to nail down the honourees. Leora:It usually involves both of the Rabbi and us TCS: Do you think of the honourees in conjunction with each other? Joelle: No. We choose whomever is deserving. The Tzarchei Tzibur is focused on volunteering within the shul while the Keter Shem Tov is generally for volunteering outside the shul though this year s recipient Miriam has done a lot for the shul as well. Leora:Themes naturally present themselves. Last year when we realized that we had landed on a few very worthy South African honorees the idea developed to make it a South African theme night. TCS:How do you keep the event fresh? Joelle: Everything is considered. Colors, décor, menu. Leora:The menu and decor fits theme. We don t keep things the same. For example, the casino was a great addition but after 2 years, we removed it from the dinner before it got stale. TCS:What will be different this year? Joelle:The entertainment will be extremely special. I can t give away any more. Leora:It will make your head spin. TCS:What about speakers? Joelle:There are no paid speakers. People don t want to listen to speaker after speaker so we limit to the Rabbi, President and honorees. We run a tight ship. TCS: That is good to hear. Word has it that the speaker from the Bernholtz Dinner is still talking. Leora:We have very strict time limits, which we will enforce by any means necessary. TCS:What about location? Joelle: It is important to keep the venue close to the community so as to not inconvenience people. Leora:The caterer is important. Jews, food you know the deal. TCS: Any thoughts of doing something completely different.

7 Joelle:It is not so easy. Leora:We looked at different things but there are no simple answers. Joelle: We try to give them something for their money while bearing in mind that ultimately it is a fundraiser that is critical to the success of the shul. Joelle: We really try to please everybody but ultimately, we have come to the realization that it is impossible to please everyone. Leora: We work hard so it is not easy to not take the complaints personally. TCS: How much effort do you expend in preparing for the dinner? Joelle:It is hard to keep track. Calls are made while driving to work, driving home, while folding laundry. Seymour says I even call out seating arrangements in my sleep. Leora:Our families go hungry for the month. Joelle: Our families know that we are busy. TCS: Which hubby holds the fort down better in your absence? Leora:Our husbands are happy because we are too busy to nag them. Joelle: The work overtakes our lives especially in the last month but at the same time we have a lot of fun working with each other and for a great purpose. Leora: Joelle s daughter, Shoshana, one year said that Joelle and I should see a marriage therapist. TCS:The Rabbi has a lot of respect for you. Joelle:The feeling is mutual. TCS: In your mind how should people view the Dinner especially if they are wavering on whether to purchase a ticket? Joelle:Think of it as a feel good evening where people get dressed up, that showcases what people do for the shul and creates a lot of ruach. Leora:it is a fantastic opportunity to acknowledge those who are role models. Joelle: Ezra for example is a good example of someone who most people are not aware how much he does behind the scenes. TCS:So what can people do to help? Joelle:Put ads in the journal. Honorees really appreciate it and view it as a keepsake. Leora: Think of it like this, itis not called an ad for nothing. Each ad adds to the Simcha. Joelle: Last year, each choir member contributed to a joint full-pagead, which really was appreciated by Gary Rewald. Leora: Friends can join togetherto put an ad in and share the cost. Leora: One year Joelle s daughter Shoshana suggested marriage therapy for us. Joelle:And most importantly, BUY YOUR TICKETS. Leora:Don t wait to the last minute. You might think that as long as you buy it does not matter, but our planning is considerably more difficult when everyone waits until the end. Joelle: Not to mention our stress.

8 TCS:What about the cost? Joelle:You are getting a show, dinner, open bar and a fun evening with your closest 200 friends. I would say there is great value. Leora: And we go to extraordinary lengths to keep the costs down and have as much as possible go to the shul. TCS:Any thoughts about volunteers? Leora: Carla Beker is great. Joelle:We can always use more help. TCS: Any shout outs? Leora:The Rabbi, for putting in many hours and putting up with the two of us. Joelle: He is a one man machine in selling tickets. Leora: Wendy, Shonna and Hadassah. Joelle: The sweet ladies from Rabbi Rothman s class who help with the envelope stuffing. TCS: Can you give us some insight as to what your day looks like in the hours leading up to the actual Dinner? Joelle:Packing thevan to the gills. Leora: loading, packing, and schlepping from early in the morning. TCS: Any parting message? Joelle:Get out and buy your ticket. Leora:We are hiring our thugs.
