The classes will be run live via teleconference and allow the audience to interact with Rabbi Spitz in real time. 4 Sholosh Seudot Halacha Discussion A species of coffee origination from Indonesia is one of the most expensive types in the world. The beans are fed to a non-kosher animal called a luwak (civet cat), and then harvested from the luwak s dung. Something about the digestive process of the luwak gives the coffee its distinct taste. The beans are excreted whole, after which they are washed and dried and then marketed. The coffee has become popular, and can cost up to $100 a cup! The question arises whether these coffee beans, which passed through the digestive system of a non-kosher animal, are kosher. What was the final conclusion? 5 Profiles This week in celebration of Father s Day, we have a special edition of PROFILES featuring our Fathers and the impact they have had on our lives. TCS: I thought that this would be a great idea but it seems to have not registered a great response. TCS Editor: Have you not noticed that a lot of things are a much better idea when restricted to the confines of your brain but turn out to be really a bad idea in the real world? TCS: I don t follow. TCS Editor: Well like that time you tried to market chulent popsicles or suggested that a dartboard would be a good idea for the youth department. TCS: I still think there is a unserved chulent leftover market waiting to be served. TCS Editor: Well I think that giving Fathers much like Mothers some gratitude is actually a good idea. After all, how easy can parenting be when our very own forefathers and foremothers themselves could not avoid raising the Cains, Ishmaels and Esaus themselves. TCS: So buckle up in the tear-mobile and let s get this rolling. Leora Mandel: My Dad was born in Israel, pre-state & served in the IDF. He truly fits the description of a "Sabra", prickly on the outside, SOFT on the inside. My Dad's a big 'baal tzedaka' (philanthropic). When he sees a need, he's there to help financially. Once in Shul, my Dad saw a man go up for an Aliya with torn shoes. He figured the man didn't have means to buy a pair of shoes so he gave the Rabbi $200 to give to the man so he can buy new shoes. My Dad felt it wasn't respectable to read from the Torah with tattered shoes. He gives tzedaka without fanfare, usually through a third party so the recipient doesn't know who gave it. That's my special Dad, until 120 Moshe Rothman s children: Thanks for all that you do, you fill our lives with love and laughs!! Rabbi Rothman s children and grandchildren: Nothing is better than having your LOR (local orthodox rabbi) as your LOF (local orthodox father)!!! Thanks for steering the ship, and keeping us all above water!!! Your hard work does not go unnoticed, and we appreciate all that you do. We all love you very much! Happy Father's Day!! Shonna Ross: Colin Cohen. My father was educated in the old fashion English boarding school tradition but in New Zealand! From this he taught his children Shonna, Garth and Marisse that we needed to have values and that standards needed to be high. Volunteering was part of building character. Always generous we were blessed to have everything we could need due to the long hours my dad worked as a Pharmacist. But we were all expected to help out in the family business and from that we learnt what it meant to work hard. Ralph Ginzburg Family: No presence in our lives is more dependable, consistent, and helpful as yours. You are always willing to be there, to help out, and to play! To our wonderful father and Zaida, thank you for all that you do! Stuart Haber s Family: To some he is known as President, others know him as Reb Stu, or even Uncle Stu... but to us he is Dad. Our biggest supporter, wisest advisor and greatest listener. With Dad there is endless laughter and tons of affection. There is no limit to the amount of love he gives to his family. Our father is extremely hard working. After a long and stressful day at the office, Dad comes home all smiles and as calm as ever no matter what he faced at work. Dad, you are our HERO! My dad thought me to have a love for electronics, good clothes, and very nice sports cars. Love, Rachelle (I smile cuz you are my dad and I laugh cuz there is nothing you can do about it!). My father is my role model because he earns the money for the family: to provide for our education and to take us to pokemon competitions. Love Yossi. Not just because we always have good food to eat but because our Dad, Geoffrey Zaldin, has always tried to make sure he is home with us so that he can hear about our day and offer us any support and advice we may need. It is a time together we greatly treasure. As we have started down our own individual paths his support means more to us than mere words can express. Hadassah Hoffer: It s been 21 years since my Fadder, Skipper, Poppy or Pop (Newfie lingo for father) past away - I miss that Salty 'Ol Sailor from the "Rock" (that's NFLD in case you were wondering) who tried his best to understand his wife and 2 daughters...his parenting wisdom was this; No more than you should do" AND "You got a roof over your head, and you are not hungry..
