MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESIDENT MAY 8 SYNAPLEX a purpose greater than ourselves by Sheri Sachs, Temple Solel President In an era that has seen the loss of community, at a moment when our economic insecurity forces us to give greater attention to the demands of home and workplace, at such a time, we need a third place, a center of community. I am honored that Temple Solel is this third place, providing a sense of purpose greater than ourselves, but most importantly, providing a community for our family and friends. Temple Solel is a place that embraces all who enter its gates; a place where, when you are not there, someone misses you, and where no member suffers alone, grieves alone or sits home alone on a Jewish holiday. Our synagogue is a place where you stop being another face in a crowd of strangers; where someone taps you on the shoulder, recognizes you, calls you by name and affirms that you are unique and irreplaceable in the eyes of God. Temple Solel is a place about which a Jew can say with confidence: I belong here. There is nothing easy about maintaining the sense of community our synagogue provides. As members of Temple Solel, the hand of Jewish history rests heavily on each and every one of our shoulders. A wise person once remarked, There are many great Jewish organizations that raise awareness, but only synagogues raise Jews. As we approach our 30th anniversary as a congregation, we reflect on the thousands of Jews Temple Solel has raised. Indeed, we have a proud history. But to maintain our position as one of the leading Jewish institutions in Southern California, we need the commitment and collective strength of our current membership. Temple Solel provides a rich variety of social, religious, educational, Israel, and social justice opportunities designed to harness the heritage and impulse we all have as Jews for repairing Come to the Cabaret with On the Town The evening at a glance: 6:30 7: Wine & Cheese in the Beit Café 6:00 6: Erev Shabbat Service 6:00 7: GaGa 7:00 7: Congregational Israeli Dinner Falafel, hummus, salad and more Pasta available for 12 and under (Reservations Required) 7:00 8: J.J. Message from the President, continued the world. I would like to encourage your support in building our sacred community by considering your connection to Temple Solel. I have outlined some to do possibilities, and invite you to think about your involvement in the future of American Jewry through Temple Solel. To Do Possibilities at Temple Solel: Contact Dawn Grossman, our Director of Volunteer Engagement, or any Chair of a specific committee (see page 21 for committees and chairs), and ask how you can support committee efforts or volunteer opportunities at Temple Solel. Contact Judy Bricker, Director of Adult Programming, and ask how you enroll in a Jewish Adult Education program, or perhaps join a Havurah. Contact Cantor Robbins, and ask how you can participate in our services by chanting Torah and/or prayers, or provide a D var Torah. Together, we must address the boredom, the emptiness and the lack of passion that pervades many sectors of modern life. Through our involvement, Temple Solel can be a place that nurtures values and commitment in our youth, uplifts and informs the spirit of our members, and gives us all a way to be partners with God in touching hearts, challenging minds, and extending our hands with loving kindness to those in need within our community and beyond. 6 May Synaplex, continued A Double Mitzvah Everybody knows it is a good idea to recycle, but I figured out how to make recycling a double mitzvah. My name is Hannah Yellen. I am seven years old and in second grade. I ve always thought recycling is important because it helps keep our earth clean. A while ago, my mom explained to me that I could earn money for the bottles and cans that we usually put at the curb. We started taking our bottles to the local replanet center. I was surprised how much money I could earn this way. It is great to have some money to spend, but I decided to donate half of my recycling money to tzedakah. After saving up a few weeks, I brought $12.69 to Temple. Now my recycling money is going to help build safer schools for the children in Sha ar Ha negev, our Temple s sister city. By recycling, I am helping the earth and our Jewish family in Israel at the same time. It s a double mitzvah! If you are putting your bottles and cans at the curb, think about turning them into tzedakah money. To find the replanet center nearest you, visit, Everyday bottles can be turned into everyday mitzvahs! hear songs from Gypsy, Fiddler on the Roof, Beauty and the Beast, and much, much more. Hineynu encourages participation of all Temple Solel members in fulfilling the mitzvah of Gemilut Chasidim acts of lovingkindness, visiting the sick, consoling the bereaved, and welcoming the stranger. The Hineynu Community responds to the emotional/special needs of our congregational family, especially in relation to illness, bereavement, and major life changes through supportive services such as hospital and home visitation, provision of meals, and respite care. Contrary to 150 years ago, in today s world, one does not tend to live out their lives in the same village in which they were born. We move for many reasons such as jobs or a better lifestyle. With this mobility, a loss of long standing relationships ensues and a new support group takes time to develop. Close family may be distant. Neighbors come and go. But Temple Solel is here for you and can fill the breach with our excellent clergy, staff and services and in times of need, the Hineynu Caring Community. Temple Solel has, as one of its basic tenets, the concept that we are all one community. We are family. We are all here for one another. Hineynu was started with the goal to facilitate the help of members in time of need. One of the greatest times of need is when a loved one passes away. Hineynu helps our congregants through this bereavement process. You may have all seen of late an instituted by the Hineynu caring community. It is entitled Our Heartfelt Condolences. When one of our own (or a first degree relative) passes away, we want the entire congregation to be aware of this significant event and help those who are mourning the loss of their loved one. Please make sure you have provided the Temple with your most correct address so you can be informed. With relation to a death, the Hineynu steering committee has written and provided to all congregants the inspirational and educational Bereavement Guide. We also make calls, send cards, plant a tree in Israel in memory of the departed, provide meals and support as needed, as well as Chavurah Chesed (the meal after the funeral arranged by Ellen Fox and Robin Rubin). If there is ever a time when you, or one of your loved ones, is in need, please do not hesitate to contact the Temple continued on next page 8

9 SCHOOL NEWS Strong Girls and healthy choices In September of 2004, the Dove soap company tried a radical experiment. It ran an ad campaign that featured women who did not fit the typical tall and thin model that we are used to seeing in the media today. It also encouraged readers to share their ideas about the campaign on their website, hoping to create a discussion about our modern perception of beauty. Low self-esteem among girls and young women has reached a crisis level, said Dr. Ann Kearney-Cooke, Ph.D., a psychologist who collaborated on Dove s Real Girls, Real Pressure national report on the state of self-esteem. The report revealed that seven in ten girls feel inadequate about their looks, performance in school, and/or relationships. Most disturbing, girls with low self-esteem are engaging in harmful and destructive behaviors that can leave a lasting imprint on their lives. ( Girl Power? by Judy Gruen at Such is the reality for many of the teenage girls at Temple Solel, and such is the reason that three of the PreConfirmation (8/9th grade) classes they attended in February and March were based on the Strong Girls curriculum, written for the organization Jewish Women International. They were taught by Jan Rakoff, who has been a psychotherapist in the Del Mar area for over thirty years, and a longtime Temple Solel member. (The teenage guys in the class attended three classes entitled Good Guys, taught by Craig Parks!) The intention of the Strong Girls curriculum is to help ensure that our teenage girls are equipped with the selfconfidence and self-knowledge to make healthy choices and surround themselves with strong support systems that will help them achieve their goals. It is easy to shy away from implementing curriculum that deals with dating, friendship and self-esteem in a Jewish school. But, as a Jewish institution, the staff and teachers at the Temple Solel School are committed to providing the young women in our school the opportunity to talk about these issues and to learn about what Judaism says about the issues. Some of the key points that Jan Rakoff discussed with the Solel teens in class were: The way we feel about ourselves impacts how we interact in relationships. Esteem is someone else s perception of our worth or value as a person. Self-esteem is our own perception of our worth or value as a person. Being confident in ourselves and knowing what makes us happy is so important to making healthy relationship choices because we can make choices that reflect our own values and complement who we are. Surrounding ourselves with supportive friends also helps guide us in making healthy relationship choices. Some of the comments written by the girls on the evaluations included: I learned the importance of listening to my inner voice when making my relationship choices. I am going to try harder not to give in to peer pressure. I will make sure I know guys before I go out with them. I will talk to a close friend about the choices I make if I feel that I need some help. Having a safe place for young women to talk about their feelings is so important. Jan Rakoff provided a loving and open atmosphere so that the teens felt comfortable to discuss the challenges they face as girls growing up in today s world. For young Jewish women, the messages around relationships are complex and often unclear. The Strong Girls classes gave the girls an opportunity to talk openly and ask questions about the messages they receive, and to discuss their reactions to these messages. Although the girls did not walk away with all of the answers to their questions, they participated in the conversations, learned what Judaism had to say about their questions, and were listened to by a caring Jewish teacher. Hineynu, continued office to let them know. This begins the process of caring and fulfilling the mitzvah of Gemilut Chasidim as carried out by our clergy, staff and through our Hineynu caring community. One Single act of kindness may be the greatest gift you can give. We are always in need of volunteers to help out with meals, calls, transportation, writing cards, etc. For more information on volunteering and becoming a vital part of the Hineynu caring community, please call or Karin Bensusen. 11 PRESCHOOL HAPPENINGS by Cathy Goldberg, ECC Director At Temple Solel Early Childhood Center, we begin with a vision of what we hope the children will learn about Jewish traditions and holiday celebrations during the school year. This Passover in our ECC, the children listened to stories about Pesach, sang songs, and had hands-on experience making matzah. They were given flour and water the ingredients used in the process of matzah making. They felt the squishy dough between their soft fingers; squeezing, rolling, making small holes in it, and eventually placing it on a cookie sheet ready to go into the oven. What a wonderful hands-on approach to learning. The children had an awesome opportunity to use all their senses in the process. Our teachers continually amaze me with creative learning experiences geared for the developmental levels of their students. Each and every day there is something Jewish happening within the classroom. Teachers utilize Hebrew vocabulary, words are placed in both Hebrew and English in different areas of the classroom, there is a lot of holiday baking, the sh ma buzzes through the classrooms, havdallah is enthusiastically presented at the beginning of each week, we end the week with a Shabbat experience every Friday with singing and dancing. How important is this for a child attending a Jewish center? VERY! There is nowhere else that a child can be exposed to and infused with the beauty of Judaism in such precious and safe surroundings as in our ECC. So, what does this say about Jewish Early Childhood Education? This field is mandatory if we are to keep our culture and identity strong. Our staff needs to be educated both in the best practices for secular education as well as for Jewish study. This is accomplished by having them attend wonderful conferences which will help fuel them to spark interests in their classrooms. In addition to being well grounded in the world of best practices, the child s social, emotional and cognitive growth continues even in the realm of Judaism. Judaism is introduced to the child s world the same way as any other component of curriculum. It is weaved through their daily schedules. Judaism is alive and well, and is thriving throughout our center. We are fortunate to be able to transmit the love of Jewish learning in our classrooms. This is done through a loving and nurturing environment that engages the children so they can learn what our Jewish heritage and community is about. Tikkun olam, tzedakah, respect for our fellow friends and teachers, kindness to others, and strong Jewish values are all key components in our environment. In the Jewish early childhood classroom, it is important for children to learn that being nice, and kind, to other people is not a good thing to do, it is a Jewish thing to do. Children can learn that it is the Jewish way to help each other willingly and with care. Children will rise to opportunities to act as God s partner and take care of their world, if they are given the vocabulary of the Jewish values and mitzvot to go along with their actions. As a strong advocate of Jewish Early Childhood Education, it is my dedicated belief and desire to keep enriching the classrooms with a nourishing curriculum that builds strong and healthy minds by utilizing music, dance, creativity and stories, in addition to encouraging children to share, care for fellow classmates, show compassion and teach prayer. We must understand that anything secular can be turned Jewish. Teachers are a critical component to any Jewish Early Childhood Program, as they infuse a great wealth of knowledge, expertise, love and dedication in all that they do. They need to be valued and appreciated for all their hard work and commitment in making their classroom a Jewish environment. It is their responsibility to enrich the children s curriculum both in a Judaic and secular way for all students. The parents, children, educators and administration need to stand together if a cohesive community is to blossom out of our centers. Together, as a team, we are building the foundations for generations to come the foundations of a solid Jewish identity amongst our preschoolers and their families. Mitzvah Opportunity Are you willing to cook extra portions of the main dish, salad or dessert that you are making for your family so that you can provide food for the women and children at the Encinitas Community Center Abused Women s Shelter? If so, this mitzvah is for you! Three times during the year, you will make either a main dish, salad or dessert and deliver it to the Abused Women s Shelter in Encinitas. A wonderful group of Temple Solel members have been doing this for many years. The women and children at the Abused Women s Shelter very much appreciate this kind act that our Solel members perform. If you are interested, please contact Ellen Fox at efox@templesolel.net. 11

12 PASSOVER IN THE DESERT Borrego 09 Thanks to all the participants in the second annual Passover in the Desert. If I may speak for everyone, we all had a great time! You may be wondering why all those people drive out to the Anza Borrego Desert to sleep in tents for two nights leaving themselves open to the whims of nature. Will it be hot, windy, rainy, and uncomfortable? Will there be critters to contend with? Well, we had some wind, but we put up a wind break. It wasn t too hot, but we carried a lot of sunscreen just the same. It did rain a little bit on Friday night but one tent had to put on their rain fly at 3:00 a.m. because I told them it doesn t rain in the desert. And we did hear coyotes, but they were far away and calling to the moon. Through the experience, the inconveniences, and the cold walks to a bathroom at night, we go for Passover in the Desert because of the amazing camaraderie that occurs. Where else do new members get to know their neighbors by hiking together to a desert oasis? Where else do new and long time members join together to help each other with setting up tents, our temporary homes? Where else do you have time to stand together to make meals that test your creativity working with limited resources and space? And think about the need to light a lantern for Shabbat because the wind would blow out candles. And the laughter that is shared during an evening spent at a campfire telling jokes and singing. Where else do teens get to use the Bricker s RV for their evening get together but help out with the younger kids during the day without being asked? Where else do campers pull together to turn out truly delicious meals like cedar planked salmon and stir fried tofu? Where else do you get to share a daytime sky of the most radiant blue against rocky crags and a night sky filled with stars followed by the rising of a full moon? Summing it up, Passover in the Desert feels like a combination of Kibbutz life mixed with Jewish camp and gives just a hint of what it was like for our ancestors. As we said upon parting next year in Borrego! Thank you campers for making the experience so great! Vicki and Mark Remas 12 Temple Member Nelson Heller Receives Lifetime Achievement Award from Professional Organization Nelson Heller, a member of Temple Solel, with his wife Pamela, since 2008, will be honored by The Association of Educational Publishers (AEP) as one of its inductees for the 13th annual Hall of Fame awards program. Heller is President, EdNET at MDR, and founder and publisher of The Heller Reports, a business information company serving firms that sell to schools. The other 2009 inductees are Michael Ross, Senior Vice President, Education General Manager at Encyclopædia Britannica, of Chicago; and Pleasant Rowland, Founder of Rowland Reading Foundation and American Girl, of Madison, WI. Induction into the Hall of Fame, educational publishing s highest individual honor, is reserved exclusively for those who have dedicated their careers to the advancement of educational resources and the industry that develops and supports them. AEP is the nonprofit professional association for publishers of supplemental educational materials. The awards will be presented at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City next December. Nelson Heller is known for his pioneering work in connecting educators and publishers through technology. One of the first educational technology strategy officers, he recognized early on how technology could enhance the classroom and helped prepare schools for this future. He also knew that educational publishers needed advice and guidance for meeting the needs of the educational technology market, so he organized conferences, seminars, and newsletters as venues for advancement. Finally, Nelson has been a long-time champion of networking both within and outside the educational publishing arena, encouraging partnerships to advance the industry and ultimately improve the quality of the educational resources produced. Mazel Tov, Nelson!
