1 news and information from temple solel PATHFINDER JULY/AUGUST 2011 SIVAN/TAMMUZ/AV/ELUL 5771 S H A B B AT Shabbat, Shorts, Sandals = Solel in the Summer The rabbis of Sfat (the center of Jewish mysticism in the northern part of Israel around the year 1600) got Shabbat right! Every Friday, just as the sun was setting, they would head out into the grassy hills: singing and praying as they marked the Sabbath s arrival together. On Fridays, these rabbis had no need for a formal sanctuary, or dressy clothing to help them get in the mood. All they required was an inspiring outdoor setting, and a group of friends to share the moment with. Four hundred years have passed, but not much has changed. This summer, please join us as we follow their lead and inaugurate a new Solel summertime tradition. Throughout the months of July, August, and September all of our Friday evening services will be held outside! Dress casually. Bring your families. Reconnect with old friends, and come to make new ones. Mark your calendars now for these highlights: Most Friday night services during the summer will feature our Courtyard Casual Shabbat Evening Service at 6:30pm. Pre-Oneg at 6pm. Did we mention that the dress is casual? Courtyard Casual Family Services with Birthday Blessings will be held at 6:30pm on the first Fridays of the month ( July 1st, August 5th, and September 2nd). Bring your own dairy/vegetarian picnic including blankets/beach chairs at 5:30pm and/or join us for a light pre-service oneg at 6pm. Shabbat at the Beach! Break out the blankets and chairs (and don t forget your picnic dinners). Everyone is invited to join us at Moonlight Beach for services at 6pm on July 8th and August 19th. Come for the sense of community. Stay for the sunset! Our ongoing Synaplex program kicks off the new year on Friday September 9th, complete with an informal outdoor BBQ Shabbat dinner. We hope that, in stepping outside of the sanctuary, you ll discover the same thing that the rabbis of Sfat found so many years ago: that God s presence doesn t just reside in the fixed setting of our sanctuary... but that the sense of the Holy is something that completely and totally surrounds us: from the uplifting joy of being with friends, families, and neighbors to the sublime realization that God dwells in the beauty of our outdoor surroundings. We look forward to greeting you in shorts and sandals in the weeks and months ahead! For a detailed list of service times, consult the calendar in the back of this Pathfinder, check out the temple website, or call the temple at Wishing you and your families a safe and rejuvenating summer, Rabbi David Frank, Rabbi Jeff Brown, and Cantor William Tiep

As we all know, there is a definite problem with the acoustics in the social hall. Our havurah, Chaverim, was represented at the annual Temple board meeting and we asked that a special fund be established to address the acoustics problem. The board was polled and it was approved. We have funded the seed money for this from our havurah and several individual members, (Lynne & Henry Lorch and Jerry & Bev Auerbach). We ask those of you who share our problem with hearing in the social hall please consider making a donation to help correct the problem. When you send in your donation, please designate the Acoustics Repair Fund. Thank you in advance for giving this very necessary repair your priority. As soon as we raise $15,000, we will receive matching funds of $15,000 generously donated by Stephen Cohen and Michael Berlin. 7 T E M P L E S O L E L M I T Z VA H D AY Adopt-a-US-Soldier (AAUSS) Project Twenty five adults and over a dozen children from Temple Solel participated in the AAUSS box-packing event on Mitzvah Day to provide needy supplies in support of our men and women in uniform who are serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. The enthusiastic group was friendly, eager to help, and grateful, as they came together to perform a true mitzvah. The children present, as well as those who were working on another project for Mitzvah Day, provided beautiful greeting cards and letters that were packed along with the other items. Feedback in the form of correspondence and gifts from our recipients reflected their thanks and gratitude for all the work done to provide them with items normally not available to them due to their location. We were fortunate to receive a U.S. flag and a certificate from the troops in Afghanistan; the flag was flown in our honor at their unit. These gifts will be presented to Temple Solel and the congregation. Pictured are Rabbi Brown, Committee Chair Burt Koonsvitsky and Ed Beimel after receiving the flag and certificate 7

10 L I F E L O N G L E A R N I N G For additional information or to enroll in a Life Long Learning program, contact Judy Bricker at jbricker@templesolel.net or TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALL GAME Temple Solel Style Saturday, August 13; 6:00 9:00pm The unofficial anthem of America s favorite pastime, Take Me Out to the Ballgame is believed to trail only Happy Birthday and The Star-Spangled Banner as America s most performed songs. The music was written by a Jew, top Tin Pan Alley tune writer Albert Von Tilzer, who put Jack Norworth s lyrics to music in He did not actually attend a baseball game until 1940, by which time the song was routinely being played in the seventh inning stretch. Temple Solel celebrates summer and baseball with the screening of JEWS AND BASEBALL: AN AMERICAN LOVE STORY. The evening includes the screening and ball park food. Hot dog vendor Mateo s Hot Spot will be selling kosher hot dogs, chips & a drink and our Brotherhood & Youth Group will be selling popcorn and candy to celebrate the boys of summer. The rich history of Jewish participation in our nation s most iconic institution as players, fans and team owners is documented in Jews and Baseball: An American Love Story. More than a film about sports, this is a story of immigration, assimilation, bigotry, heroism, the passing on of traditions, and the shattering of stereotypes. The story is brought to life through Dustin Hoffman s narration, and interviews with dozens of passionate and articulate fans, writers, executives, and especially players including Al Rosen, Kevin Youkilis, Shawn Green, Bob Feller, Yogi Berra, and a rare interview with the Hall of Fame pitcher Sandy Koufax. Fans including Ron Howard and Larry King connect the stories of baseball to their own lives, and to the turbulent history of the last century. Their stories are inter-cut with dramatic and never-before-seen film clips and photos of great Jewish players, unforgettable games, and the broad sweep of American history. 91 minutes. RSVPs for dinner requested. Sponsorship opportunities are still available. HAVDALAH NIGHTS Saturday, August 27; 7:00-9:30pm Looking to connect with other Temple members? Then be sure to put the evening of August 27 on your calendar. We will then review rabbinic literature to see how traditional Judaism viewed this troubling chapter in Moses life. Havdalah, Speaker, Dessert & Socializing $5 per person; advance payment requested. SAVE THE DATE Shabbat Synaplex Goes Unplugged Friday, September 9th Additional information will be coming soon to your mail box. 11 T E M P L E N E W S passover in the desert Mark & Vicki Remas The Passover Seder is a time when most of us come together with family and friends to remember when Moses confronted Pharaoh with the reality that the Jewish slaves must be released from bondage. The omnipotent ruler was not easily convinced and a series of plagues had to be let loose on Egypt before clarity set in. Even then Pharaoh was not happy and pursued the Jews across the sands of Egypt only to be lost in the Red Sea. Passover allows us to remember the escape of the Jews. It was the start of a 40 year pilgrimage to the Promised Land, the land that is now Israel. Most families gather at home and share a meal along with their favorite recitation of the Passover story. At Temple Solel there is another group that extends the story to a Passover event in the desert. Instead of staying in the comfort of a home, an intrepid group ventures to Palm Canyon Campground in the Anza Borrego Desert for the weekend. The experience reminds us of a time when the Jews trekked through deserts and mountains to find the land of Canaan. This year, the 4th annual Passover in the Desert was held on April Fifty-two campers, adults and kids, spread across two group camp sites at Palm Canyon Campground. Mark and Vicki Remas coordinated the event with the gracious help of Kent and Judy Bricker. Even Cantor Billy, Michelle and Zachary Tiep braved the elements along with us. We were pleased to see many returning campers, some who have gone all four years like the Woods, Kessler and Schulman Families as well as others. We had many new campers join us this year too. It was not easy this year because we had our own plague the wind with gusts to 35 mph on Friday night and 45 mph on Saturday night. The wind took its toll on equipment, ruining more than one tent. However, the spirit and camaraderie of the community proved to be stronger and fiercer than the wind. The Temple Solel family pulled together to cook wonderful meals with savory cedar planked salmon, polenta with mushroom gravy, and salad on Friday and rib eye roast, baked potatoes or yams, with stir fried vegetables and pear compote with whipped cream on Saturday. And, of course, we had vegetarian dishes too! From Friday s arrival to Sunday s departure there was little idle time. Everyone came together to talk, help set up camps, keep an eye on the running children, and prepare meals. On Saturday we hiked to a palm oasis and spread out along a crisp clean stream to splash around in our own pool or waterfall. The weather was a perfect 80 degrees and blue skies prevailed. The afternoon proved to be a flurry of activity as adults and children shared bright colors to tie dye anything from tennis shoes to shirts to scarves to kippot. Kids were unplugged from all that is electronic and made up games to play. All in all Passover in the Desert brought out the best in all of us and gave deeper meaning to the experiences of our ancestors. We are looking forward to next year! 11

13 From 1978 to 2011, Temple Solel has grown from a handful of families with the dream of building a strong, Reform Jewish temple community to the bustling center of prayer, learning, and activities in which you participate today. Those early founders dedicated themselves to the task. Their foresight, hard work, and fundraising efforts enabled their dream to blossom. We must continue their work and keep Temple Solel on strong footing to provide a lively Jewish community for our children, grandchildren, friends, and even strangers. Please consider joining the Circle of Honor to further support this important effort. 15 O U R P R O G R A M S O U R Y O U T H L E G A C Y C I R C L E When I was born into this world, I found many carob trees planted by my father and grandfather. Just as they planted trees for me, I am planting trees for my children and grandchildren so they will be able to eat the fruit of these trees. One of the many ways that members of our congregation have chosen to express their deep commitment to our community is by naming Temple Solel in their will, in their trust, in another planned charitable gift, or by making an endowment donation. This is a way to make a lasting contribution that continues your Jewish legacy in perpetuity. We wish to thank those generous donors and to acknowledge them as members of the Legacy Circle. If you have named Temple Solel in your will or trust, or if you have made another form of legacy gift to Temple Solel, we would like to acknowledge your generosity. Any amount of giving is greatly appreciated. Please call Robin Rubin at (760) , and we will be glad to add your name to the membership list for the Legacy Circle. 15
