2 Course/Module description: The seminar will examine the story of Joseph and Potiphar's wife and its role in shaping the characterization of Joseph in the literature of the Second Temple period and in rabbinic literature. The presentation, interpretation and aims of each work as well as the development of traditions and motifs will be discussed. Course/Module aims: To examine the presentation of the story of Joseph and Potiphar's wife in Jewish literature of the Second Temple and post-70 CE eras in particular with respect to the aims of the different authors and their social-historical contexts. To study a representative and wide variety of Jewish works written during the Second Temple period and to trace the development of the various motifs, ideas, interpretations and adaptations of this story into rabbinic literature. Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: 1. To attain a grasp of the wide body of Jewish literature written during the Second Temple period and appreciate its importance for understanding rabbinic literature. 2. To analyze the interpretations and adaptations of the biblical story in the works studied from the apocrypha, pseudepigrapha, Jewish-Hellenistic and rabbinic literature. 3. To examine the shared interpretations and developments, on the one hand, and the unique presentations and aims of each work, on the other.
