2 Course/Module description: The course will track John Rawls's theory of justice, and other theories which sprang as rivals to his. We shall ask: what is the role of a social contract in a theory of justice? What is equality? What is the place of luck on the one hand, and personal responsibility on the other, in a theory of justice. Should everyone be guaranteed an income? Including those who spend their days surfing? Does justice exist outside the state? Within the family? Does the scope of justice encompass animals, future generations? Course/Module aims: Expose the students to canonical texts about justice. Exercise with them the ability to independently engage with a text. Allow for a critical discussion in the classroom. Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: 1. to critically read central texts in philosophy and political philosophy. 2. to discriminate between the primary matter and the insignificant 3. to formulate a position with respect to the text, to express in class and to justify it. 4. to relevantly and critically relate to other positions. Attendance requirements(%): 100 Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: A lecture and a guided discussion. Course/Module Content: 1. Introduction - Analytical Political Philosophy 2.
