Languages: Ancient: Greek, Latin, Ge'ez Modern: Hebrew, English, German, French Synopsis of research From my undergraduate years at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem I have been captivated by the study of the Judaism of the Hellenistic-Roman era, mainly by its variegated literature: the works written by Jewish groups during

11 the Second Temple period in the land of Israel and in the Diaspora, tannaitic literature, and Jewish-Christian literature. In my M.A. and Ph.D. theses I investigated subtopics of this broad field of research, to which I continue to devote time and intensive study. My M.A. thesis dealt with an early Jewish essay preserved in two secondcentury Christian writings, the Didache and the Epistle of Barnabas. I started by translating the two witnesses chapters 1-6 of the Didache and chapters of the Epistle from the Greek and the Latin. I then analyzed the differences between these two witnesses and attempted to reconstruct an Urtext of this essay. The final section of my thesis interprets and evaluates the reconstructed text via comparison with parallels from the Apocrypha and Pseudepigrapha. The second-century-bce Book of Jubilees, a rewriting of Genesis and the beginning of Exodus, was the subject of my Ph.D. thesis. This work includes some of the earliest known biblical interpretation, which reflects its author's awareness of difficulties in the biblical text. However, in rewriting the Bible its author's main goal is to shape the biblical stories so that they reflect his separatist ideology, halakhic path, and theology. Furthermore, as an adherent of an apocalyptic worldview, Jubilees' author constructs his book in accord with known features of apocalyptic literature: pseudepigraphic attribution (the book was given to Moses on Mount Sinai), descriptions of heavenly powers who affect the earthly dominion, and expectation of the End of Days. Study of the book of Jubilees demands profound knowledge of a range of historical periods and literary genres. One prerequisite for comprehension of the early interpretation found in Jubilees is an understanding of the Bible and its sources. Awareness and knowledge of other early biblical interpretation are also necessary, as is conversance with the social-intellectual world of Second

12 Temple groups and sects: Hellenistic-Jewish writings; Wisdom literature; Hasmonean propaganda; apocalyptic literature and Qumranic sectarian writings. The interrelationship between society, politics, and philosophy reflected in Second Temple literary works requires a good grasp of the historical events and of the national, international, and political dissension and quarrels of the period. The halakhic dispute so central to the author's world makes expertise in the biblical laws and their development in Second Temple halakhic, as well as in tannaitic, literature a desideratum. I have been actively engaged in studying and acquiring knowledge in these fields from the first year of my doctoral studies. Moreover, although Jubilees was originally written in Hebrew, it was not preserved in its original language. Hebrew fragments of this work found at Qumran, many in number but minor in content, point to the type of Hebrew used. A coherent, full text was preserved only in Geez. The book was also partly preserved in Latin, as were brief paraphrases in Greek and Syriac. During the course of my studies, I acquired proficiency in these languages, employing this knowledge to translate some of the chapters of Jubilees in my doctoral thesis. My publications reflect the broad range of my interests: My first paper was in the field of halakha (part 2 [=refereed articles in my CV], no. 1). Additional papers dealt with halakhic matters (part 1 [=Chapters in symposium volumes in my CV], nos. 3, 4, 8, 10, 13, 14; part 2, nos. 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 15). The question of the relationship between halakha and literary genre is discussed in several of these papers (part 1, no. 10; part 2, nos. 3, 8, 9). In the near future I intend to publish a book (jointly with Professor Aharon Shemesh), which will survey the development of halakha in light of the Qumran Scrolls (to be entitled: Revealing the Hidden). The preparation of this book was supported by an ISF grant.

13 Other of my papers treat Second Temple Wisdom literature (part 1, nos. 6, 12; part 2, no. 10) and Hellenistic-Jewish literature (part 1, nos. 7, 12; part 2, nos. 10, 13). The Qumran Community's thought and writings are at the core of many papers (part 1, nos. 1-3, 5-11, 14; part 2, nos. 5-9, 14-15). Apocalyptic literature and messianic movements are an important part of my research (part 1, nos. 9, 11; part 2, nos. 3, 5, 14) and I published a book on this subject in the Broadcast University series. Early Christian writings are analyzed in a number of papers (part 1, nos. 4, 7, 11, 13). Another issue I have addressed is the question of the relationship between different Jewish writings from the land of Israel (part 1, no. 1; part 2, nos. 3, 5). In order to keep abreast of developments in my fields of interest I attend and deliver papers at international conferences both in Israel and abroad. In light of my long acquaintance with Jubilees, and because of my knowledge of the necessary languages, I was chosen to prepare a new Hebrew translation of the book with a full commentary, to be published by the Ben-Zvi Institute. For the past four years this project has received support from an ISF grant. My current academic position at BGU in the Deichmann Program for Jewish and Christian Literature of the Hellenistic-Roman Era is a direct outgrowth of my fields of research and expertise. Established and funded by Dr. Heinz Deichmann, a German philanthropist and a devout Christian, this program has its goal the enhancement of mutual understanding between Christians and Jews. In this program I teach both Jewish and Christian literature, and am currently editing a book of Hebrew translation of collected essays by Prof. Larry Hurtado, dealing with early Christianity.
