2 Course/Module description: The course deals with a range of socio-cultural and religious issues which are pivotal to understanding the culture of the Greater Iran during the period between the Arab conquest (7th-8th c.) and the establishment of the Safavid rule (early 16th c.). Course/Module aims: To outline the major cultural problems of the Iranian areal by means of discussing primary sources (in translation) dealing the the chosen problem and secondary scholarly literature. Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be able to: To demonstrate the good knowledge of main characteristics of Iranian cultural history. Attendance requirements(%): 100% Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: Frontal teaching (including powerpoint presentations) combined with class discussion on the basis of the assigned reading material Course/Module Content: Topic 1: Introduction. What is the Iranian areal? Political entity vs. historical-cultural entity. Main geographical, ethnic and linguistic characteristics of the Iranian areal. Topic 2: The "Beginning" and the Great Iranian empires before Islam (the Acheamenids, the Arsacids, the Sasanians). What is Zoroastrianism? Topis 3: The Arab conquest and the establishment of the Muslim government in Iran. Processes of Islamization and the status of Zoroastrians. How did Iran succeed in keeping its cultural specificity? Firdausi' Shah-nama. Topic 4: Emergence of local Persian dynasties -the Tahirids, the Saffarids, the Buyis and the Sasanians - a political sketch. Topic 5: The contribution of Iranian cultural traditions to Islamic concepts and institutions. Development of Neo-Persian language. page 2 / 7
