1 TEMPLE OHEV SHOLOM Phone: Fax: June 2014 Sivan-Tammuz 5774 Volume 4, Number 11 From your rabbi FROM YOUR RABBI Ending the year preparing for the next one It s hard to believe that the Religious School year is over for It seems as though we were welcoming our children to class just last week and now they are off for the summer. Life at Ohev winds down a little in July and August (we won t have a temple bulletin in July) as our Adult Education Classes take a summer hiatus as well. But services take place every Friday night rain or shine and we are always here for you if you need us. As you know, we are in the midst of searching for a Cantorial Soloist, as our friend Yael Dadoun is graduating from HUC-JIR with her degree in Jewish Education and is preparing to move to Miami Beach Florida to begin her new position as Educator at Temple Beth Shalom. We also are searching for a cantor to join with me on the bema at High Holidays, so life will be very busy for us at the temple. In the meanwhile, please make sure to join us in worship on Friday evening May 30th as we welcome the Old World Folk Band to Ohev and share a festive Oneg Shabbat following services to say good-bye to Yael. Also, I hope that we all remember that Jewish life doesn t end when the school year ends, and the days become warmer and it s easier to plan a bar-b-que on Friday night rather than go to services. We never take attendance, but we do want you to know that we are here if you need us even if your children are away at camp rather than coming to Religious School and you are thinking more about the beach than singing Adon Olam. The June schedule for Friday night worship is here in the Bulletin. July and August worship will be held with our friends from Beth El. Services June 27-July 25 will be at Ohev Sholom at 6 PM. Services August 1-22 will be at Beth El at 5:45 PM. High Holidays are late this year (early last year, late this year, you know how it goes ) but if you like to plan, the schedule is found here in the Bulletin. So enjoy your summer take it easy on that vacation you ve planned, or just take some time to relax. I ll look forward to seeing you Your rabbi, Peter Kessler Inside this issue: From the President 2 From the Principal 3 Information 4 Temple Funds 5 TOSS Info 6 SOS President 7 Kaddish 8,9 Calendar 10 The Temple Ohev Sholom Bulletin is published 10 months a year in Harrisburg, PA.

2 Page 2 June 2014 PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Dear Fellow Congregants, I m asking for help but this time it has nothing to do with money. You may be aware of the recent First International Resources report on the world s attitude towards Jews. Here is a summary of the findings. SUMMER SHABBAT SERVICES We will be enjoying the camaraderie of our friends at Beth El Temple again this summer! Joint services with Beth El and Ohev Sholom will be held throughout the summer months. 26% of the world's adults are "deeply infected" with anti- Semitism Nearly half have of all adults in the world never heard of the Holocaust In the U.S., 9% believed the majority of negative stereotypes about Jews Three in four adults in the world have never met a Jewish person JOINT SHABBAT EVENING SERVICES WILL BE EVERY FRI- DAY AT 6 PM IN THE LEHRMAN CHAPEL AT OHEV SHOL- OM JUNE 27TH THROUGH JULY 25TH. JOINT SHABBAT EVENING SERVICES WILL BE EVERY FRI- DAY AT 5:45 PM AT BETH EL TEMPLE AUGUST 1ST THROUGH AUGUST 22ND. In the United States Jews have two problems. The first is the Jewish public relations problem created when the wrong Jews make news, like racist LA Clippers owner Donald Sterling and fraudulent investment banker Bernie Madoff. Of course these men are outliers but they can do a lot of damage to our name. There isn t much we can do about that it just stinks. The second problem we have is of our own doing. Jews all over the country are not affiliating with synagogues or they are quitting them. Our parents would never consider leaving a synagogue, recognizing it was a cornerstone of the Jewish world. I think they were also far more concerned about the survival of the Jewish people than we are. Today, many families think it s more important to spend the money and time on other things. Read the study results above again. Here s where I need your help. We all know Jewish families that are unaffiliated. They feel no obligation to pay it forward because in their minds the Jewish faith is doing fine. We re not doing fine. Please alert them to the findings of the aforementioned study -- it s all over the internet. Then ask them to join a synagogue and help us put Judaism on a safer track. See you at Temple, Larry Kluger HOSPITAL VISITS Rabbi Kessler is available for home and hospital visits for our congregants in need. Won t you please do a mitzvah and let him know of those who would like a visit? 3 Page 3 June 2014 FROM THE PRINCIPAL People who know me well know that I am particularly passionate about several things: my family; Jewish education, the State of Israel and --the March of the Living. I d like to share some reflections on the March of the Living from which I recently returned--a two week program for Jewish teens that is a study in contrasts. I was accompanied by Rebecca Feldman, Michael Jose, Jen Wiley and adult participant, Marilynn Kanenson. The first week is spent in Poland. Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Memorial Day, is observed with a 5 kilometer march from Auschwitz I to Birkenau, the sub camp where Jews were starved, tortured and murdered. The second week is spent in Israel and the students observe both Yom Hazikaron, Israel s Memorial Day for fallen soldiers, and Yom Ha atzmaut, Israel Independence Day, with their Israeli counterparts. A second March begins in downtown Jerusalem and ends at the kotel, the Western Wall. The recurring theme of the March of the Living...what we sang to, what we danced to, what we prayed for-- was Am Yisrael Chai...the Jewish people live on...the March is an inspiring, life affirming, unforgettable journey; a roller coaster of emotions-- from sadness to elation, from despair to hope, and above all, a feeling of "oneness" with Klal Yisrael--the Jewish people. Imagine 10,000 young Jews from all corners of the earth gathering in Poland to bear witness, with great sadness and loss, to the devastation of the rich, thriving 600 year-old Polish Jewish community. They searched for traces of a world that is no more. They discovered that, of the hundreds of Jewish schools, synagogues and institutions that existed in Warsaw before the war, all that remained was one sparsely attended synagogue (used by the Nazis as a stable during the war) and a centuries-old Jewish cemetery that was left relatively untouched by the Nazis during their occupation of Warsaw. They saw a new resurgence of Jewish culture with synagogues, schools, organizations and youth groups. Like many others, our students may have left Poland still wondering how it was possible for the destruction of an entire generation of Jews to occur but they have pledged to keep their memories alive. Imagine the March of the Living---walking along the same train tracks as our grandparents did stopping along a high bridge and looking out. seeing hundreds of Israeli flags waving in the breeze, held with pride by 10,000 beautiful, young Jews hailing from every imaginable country and con- tinent being privileged to witness not a walk of despair but rather a march of life, of youth, of the promise of a bright Jewish future. In my entire life, I have never experienced anything more life affirming Then, seemingly in an instant, imagine these same 10,000 lovely Jewish teens bearing witness once again, this time with joy, pride and burgeoning love, to the rebirth of another rich, thriving Jewish community...this time in Israel, our Jewish homeland.exquisitely beautiful beyond words. During a previous visit to the Polish death camp, Maidaneck, I saw a mother wheeling a baby stroller through the camp while a group of Polish teens nearby chatted and laughed, as if they were in a park. I noticed them soon after entering the camp, just beyond the entrance gate. Their laughter was the first sound I heard in Maidaneck, an otherwise silent, lifeless place. Even now, years later, the sound of their laughter still echoes in my mind when I think about that visit. I went to Maidaneck because it is part of my own story; I left thinking about how little it means to many others. I didn't take any photographs at Maidaneck because I didn't need to: horror, even seen 60 years after it ended, isn't easily erased from memory. Speechlessness cannot be captured on film. Sheer incomprehension at the senselessness of what happened there does not translate digitally. The pain caused by standing on the same ground where countless Jews and non-jews perished is not the kind of thing one can record with a camera. The March of the Living is powerful, meaningful, memorable... It stays with the students and changes the way they feel about their religion; about living active Jewish lives; about love for Israel, and about how Jews the world over are all connected to each other. Bryan Adler, whose parents are Ohev Sholom members Ted and Shelley Adler, participated in the March of the Living over fifteen years ago. This is an excerpt from his journal. "Before I went on the March, I was a Jew in my head; now I'm a Jew in my heart." To me, this says it all. If you d like more information on the March of the Living either for students or adult participants, please feel free to contact me. In the meantime, on behalf of the entire Religious School, please accept my warmest good wishes for a lovely summer vacation. I look forward to seeing all of you in the fall. Lillian Rappaport

TOSS BOOK REVIEW 2014 Temple Ohev Sholom Sisterhood is pleased to announce that on October 23, 2014, the Symons/Rose Book Review event will feature New York Times best-selling author Ayelet Waldman. Waldman will be discussing her newest novel Love & Treasure. This book is described as a multilayered beautifully integrated story that scans 20th Century European Jewish history. Part document, part thriller, part love story and mystery; it is reminiscent of both The Red Violin and The History of the Book. It traces the origin and history of a unique pendant that is found amongst the treasures on the Hungarian Gold Train, an actual collection of train cars that was commandeered by the Allied troops in Austria in It was filled with a treasure trove of valuable goods confiscated from the Hungarian Jews during WWII. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to host this world-famous author and feature what is hailed as her finest novel to date. Wishing Blanche Figowitt a speedy recovery Rose Ann Woldorf, Debbie Yoffe, Diane Goldberg Happy Birthday wishes to Elaine Schwab on her 75th birthday Diane Goldberg Happy Birthday wishes to Nancy Weber on her 70th birthday Rose Ann Woldorf
