TEMPLE OHEV SHOLOM Phone: Fax: May 2014 Iyar-Sivan 5774 Volume 4, Number 10 FROM YOUR RABBI Mazel-tov to Yael Dadoun and farewell. Mazel-tov to our soloist and friend, Yael Dadoun, as she receives her Masters of Jewish Education degree from Hebrew Union College on May 8. Yael has studied diligently for her degree and she is so excited for her Masters Degree and the opportunity to put her creative ideas for keeping Judaism alive for the next generation to work in synagogue life. Yael has accepted a position that will allow her to be the educator of a very large congregation in Miami Beach. While we will all miss her beautiful voice, and amazing energy on the bema, we are thrilled that she will be able to follow her dream of being an educator and the opportunity to put her years of study to work. You will be able to see Yael and wish her well two more times at Ohev she will be here for Friday evening and Saturday morning worship on May 2-3, and on May We will honor her with a special Oneg Shabbat following our 7:30 PM worship on Friday May 30th. If possible, she will join us on the bema at High Holidays, if her new position will allow her the time off for her duties in Florida. So what does this mean for us? Well we have some work to do. Like most other synagogues here and around the country, we are not in a position to have two full time clergy again. But we have learned over the past year that with the right team in place and through a coordinated effort, we can not only survive but we can thrive with a full-time rabbi, a part-time soloist, a religious school administrator and an office administrator. We just need to find the right soloist, so that s what we are going to do. A committee of temple board members is working with me to identify the right person, or persons, to bring liturgical music to our synagogue family. We may find one person to take care of everything, High Holiday worship as well as Shabbat. Or we may find a few people who could do different things for us on the bema one who could lead traditional worship and work with me at B nai Mitzvot and another to play guitar for Family Services. We re not sure until we start the process. We are very fortunate. We have an amazing educator, and I have never been one to shy away from hard work. Our temple board is committed to make sure liturgical worship remains an important part of synagogue life at Ohev Sholom, while keeping an eye on our finances. We may not be able to afford someone as talented as Cantor Kunitz, of blessed memory, or fortunate to find someone with the personality and energy of Yael Dadoun, but we sure are going to try our best to bring the best person (or persons) to lead us in song. Of course, I am always available to listen to any questions or concerns about this process to bring to liturgical music to our bema. In the meanwhile, please wish Mazel-tov to our wonderful Yael, I hope you had a joyous Passover, and I hope to see you soon. 2 Page 2 PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Dear Fellow Congregants, Oneg Shabbat in Honor of Yael Dadoun May 2014 Last time I wrote I asked for your support of the Purim Spiel and the Celebration of Music event. Despite some horrendous weather, we had a tremendous turnout from our congregation and the community at both events. Thank you to everyone who attended and thank you to the many volunteers, donors and performers who made both events a resounding success. As we prepare the budget for next year we fully expect to remain on sound financial footing not exactly flush with cash but with a clear path to a balanced budget. As the Rabbi noted, like most other congregations around the country we are not in a position to hire a full time cantor. We will, however, hire a soloist and we will continue to provide top notch services, programs and education to our children and adult members. Speaking of which, attendance at services, adult study classes and Tot Shabbat have been excellent lately. Maybe we re all just thanking G-d that winter is over! Before I sign off there is one more request. Many families wait until late in our fiscal year to get current on temple and religious school dues. I mentioned above that we are going to be fine financially but that presumes dues get paid. If you are carrying a balance with the temple or the religious school we need you to pay now. If you are having difficulty meeting your financial obligations to the synagogue please contact our financial secretary, Aaron Krause. Happy Pesach and see you at synagogue! Larry Kluger Please join us in the Social Hall following Shabbat Worship at 7:30 PM in the Sanctuary on May 30th as we wish her Mazel-tov on her Master s Degree in Jewish Education and her new position as educator at Temple Beth Shalom in Miami Beach. We ll miss you, Yael! HOSPITAL VISITS Rabbi Kessler is available for home and hospital visits for our congregants in need. Won t you please do a mitzvah and let him know of those who would like a visit? 3 Page 3 May 2014 FROM THE PRINCIPAL The faculty member we re highlighting this month is our 4th grade teacher, Jackie Huttemann. Jackie originally hails from Albany, New York and has lived in the Harrisburg area for over 25 years. In her day job, she is the Payroll Director for Keystone Human Services, Inc. She is married to Gary and they are the parents of Emily, Julie and Brian. Brian is presently serving in the United States Armed Forces. They are the proud grandparents of Delan, Liam and Ella. Jackie has been an instructor in our Religious School for twenty years. In addition to teaching holidays, bible, and history, Jackie is also one of our Hebrew specialists. One of Jackie s main focuses is on Hebrew literacy, and, in particular, teaching the children to both decode and understand prayers in our liturgy. Students in her Hebrew class also have the opportunity to learn key vocabulary in Hebrew in order to enhance their understanding of the meaning of the prayers. A favorite part of her work as Religious School teacher is helping the children prepare for leading Friday night services. She loves to see how, through practice and hard work, the children gain the confidence to do a wonderful job in reading Hebrew and in leading erev Shabbat services. Jackie has a generational view on the importance of Jewish Education. Among the many reasons for learning about our religion, the most important, according to Jackie, is so that this generation of children can impart the lessons, traditions and values of Judaism to their own children someday. A blessing and a gift..that s what Jackie is to our congregation and school. We love and appreciate her for all she is and for all she has done on behalf of the children of this congregation. Dedication of Memorial to Harold Berman Please join us at 12 noon on May 4th, as we dedicate the beautiful sculpture by Dale Rogers given to Temple Ohev Sholom by Charles Berman in memory of his son, Harold. The sculpture is next to our building adjacent to the glass doors leading to the Social Hall. 6th Grade Prepares for their B'nai Mitzvah Many in our 6th grade class are about to begin the studies for their B'nai Mitzvah! Rabbi Kessler led them and their parents in a workshop in the Sanctuary, followed by an project in our Art Room to create a yad for each to use in their Torah studies. Mazel-tov to our 6th grade! Ben Kluger, Andrew Casher, and Jacob Zucker show off their creations. Sophia Shienvold, Madeline Cohen, and Isabel Borr hard at work Lillian Rappaport

May 2014 Page 4 Pre K and K Family Education Israeli Dancing Comes to Ohev Sholom! Our congregation was blessed to have Penny Brichta, a nationally known Israeli dance instructor (and childhood friend of Rabbi Kessler's), join us on April 6th in our Social Hall to teach Israeli dancing to our Religious School students, and adults from the PEP class. Thanks, Penny, we had a great time! Rabbi Kessler, Penny Brichta, and our friend from Hershey, Miriam Rosenwasser, take a break from dancing. Our PEP class never moved so fast since we accidentally provided double the amount of pastry at our class last year! Seventh grade trip to Holocaust Museum

Mazel Tov on 70 years together, Beatrice & Dick Goldsmith Rose Ann Woldorf Happy 70 th Anniversary to Beatrice & Dick Goldsmith Fran & Richard Casher B NAI MITZVAH Hello! My name is Ben Miskin and I will become a Bar Mitzvah on May 3rd. I am in the seventh grade at Cumberland Valley s Good Hope Middle School in Mechanicsburg, where I have made Honor Roll each marking period this year. I am on the Cumberland Valley Diving Team during the winter months, and now, in the spring and through the summer, I play rugby for Cumberland Valley. Rugby is a fun and exciting sport and I have made some great friends playing. Becoming a Bar Mitzvah is important to me because it marks my becoming an adult and will allow me to be a part of a minion. I and my classmates worked very hard this year to become Bar and Bat Mitzvoth and I at least, look forward to the next years as we continue our learning experience. My Torah portion are the first parts of Leviticus 23. It tells of the Sabbath and keeping it holy. The passage also tells us the importance of keeping the Passover. Keeping the Sabbath and the Passover allows us to connect with G-d, elevate our spirituality and through prayer, realize how lucky we are. I want to thank Rabbi Kessler for teaching us all so much, and for leading the service, and Barbara Cohen for preparing me this past year for my Bar Mitzvah. I also want to thank for family for always me helping me when I needed the extra push. Hi! My name is Samantha Fingerman. I am a seventh grade honors student at Good Hope Middle School. I play the flute in seventh and eighth grade band. This previous spring, I was in the Good Hope Musical, Nonsense in the North Woods. In my free time I enjoy playing 14u softball for CV Softball. I also participate in girl scouts with a small but mighty troop. I like to go outside in the warm weather and play a few games of paintball. I enjoy coming home at the end of the day and finding my five month year old puppy waiting for me at the door. I will become a Bat mitzvah on May thirty-first, and I look forward to celebrating my major life achievement.

Page 7 May 2014 SISTERHOOD PRESIDENT S MESSAGE It is amazing to me that four years have passed since I took office as Temple Ohev Sholom s Sisterhood President. It has been an incredible journey and I feel privileged to have been a part of such an amazing organization. The women of Sisterhood do so much for our synagogue. I was recently asked to make a list of the things our Sisterhood does for our Temple. I was shocked at the length of the list once I started it. I want to especially thank my Executive Board (Tracy Goldberg, Janet Landesberg, Rosette Roth, Luisa Narins, Chastity Cottingham- Frye, Sarah Brown, Stephanie Blandy, Phyllis Berman and Cindy Lynch). Your advice has been invaluable. You all deserve a round of applause. I will continue to be active in Sisterhood and on its Board for years to come because I feel that without Sisterhood, our Temple would be a much different place. I wish much success to the incoming Sisterhood Board and to Sarah Brown and Luisa Narins as they are installed as co-presidents of Sisterhood on Thursday, May 8 th. Thank you, Elissa Arch

Page 8 May 2014 Every Beat Counts Sister Temple Ohev Sholom Sisterhood and Harrisburg Hadassah presented an outreach and medical education program to our joint membership about Woman s Heart Health at our Sisterhood Brunch in early March. This is an incredibly important topic to both our organizations as heart disease still continues to be the number one killer of women around the world. It was nice that both organizations could explore this topic in a joint venture. Dr. Roberto Hodara of Pinnacle Health spoke to our group about heart disease in women, how to minimize our risks and even reverse damage done. Women are less likely than men to seek medical attention during a heart attack, which reduces the chances of a positive outcome, so the signs of a heart attack were reviewed for attendees, among other valuable information. All participants wore Red for Heart Health Awareness. A heart healthy meal was served and a great time was had by all.
