ORDER OF WORSHIP FOR PALM SUNDAY April 9, 2017 Officiate Pastor Douglas Bergelin Musician Ricki Budewitz Lay Minister 8:00 am am-joel Zastrow 10:30 am-ted Fuller Acolyte 8:00 am-lucy Groeler 10:30 am- Geena Kuehl AS WE GATHER So it all comes down to this. It all is the history of our Lord s incarnation, birth, preaching, teaching, healing, calling disciples, and now, to this Jesus coming to His goal in Jerusalem. This Sunday is so full of meaning that it cannot even be succinctly summarized. The meaning of it all unfolds before us as we spend an entire week, cheering the King at His triumphal entry, then gathering with Him in the suspenseful quiet of the Upper Room, then the garden, then His arrest, then the trials, and ultimately the cheers turn into jeers and He reaches His goal in Jerusalem. He dies. Only knowing who Jesus really is and the reason for His death, only in knowing the purpose of God s Law can we discover the joy of the Gospel, the good news of the forgiveness of our sins, new birth and new life eternal life! That spiritual knowledge gives us the stamina to endure this week and the rest of our lives. For Our Guests: Hymnal Key-LSB is the Maroon Hymnal, WOV is the smaller Blue Hymnal + PREPARATION + Please Stand Children Enter With Palms GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Amen. Blessed is He Who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna to the Son of David. COLLECT Let us pray. Most merciful God, as the people of Jerusalem, with palms in their hands, gathered to greet Your dearly beloved Son when He came into His Holy City, grant that we may ever hail Him as our King and, when He comes again, may go forth to meet Him with trusting and steadfast hearts and

follow Him in the way that leads to eternal life; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. HOLY GOSPEL John 12:12 19 The triumphal entry The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the twelfth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. The next day the large crowd that had come to the feast heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem. So they took branches of palm trees and went out to meet Him, crying out, Hosanna! Blessed is He Who comes in the name of the Lord, even the King of Israel! And Jesus found a young donkey and sat on it, just as it is written, Fear not, daughter of Zion, behold, your King is coming, sitting on a donkey s colt! His disciples did not understand these things at first, but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things had been written about Him and had been done to Him. The crowd that had been with Him when He called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness. The reason why the crowd went to meet Him was that they heard He had done this sign. So the Pharisees said to one another, You see that you are gaining nothing. Look, the world has gone after Him. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. Let us go forth in peace, In the name of the Lord. OPENING HYMN LSB 442 All Glory, Laud and Honor vs. 1-All Sing, vs. 2-Woman Sing, vs. 3-Men Sing, vs.4-all Children & Youth Sing, vs. 5-All Sing THE APOSTLES CREED All: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Please Be Seated + LITURGY OF THE SACRAMENT + We celebrate the Lord s Supper OUR COMMUNION PRACTICE Celebrating the Lord s Supper is an expression of our unity in the true Christian faith. In the Sacrament we are joined in a very close, personal and intimate way with Christ and with one another. We believe that when a person partakes of the Sacrament they are also confessing their unreserved agreement with the doctrine and practice that is proclaimed from the altar and pulpit of which the Sacrament is administered. In his small Catechism, Martin Luther gives us guidelines for self-examination of our faith and our worthiness to receive Christ s atoning lifeblood. Therefore, we welcome all to the Lord s Table who first have been baptized in the name of the Triune God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, are in agreement with this statement, and then with heartfelt conviction can boldly proclaim I believe that + Jesus is my only Lord and Savior from sin, death and the devil; + I am a sinner in need of God s forgiveness; + Jesus Christ is present in the Sacrament, and the bread and wine I receive are the true body and blood of Christ; + God assures me that my sins have been forgiven and that I have life and salvation through faith in Him; + And then as He enables me, I pledge to amend my sinful life, to thank and praise, serve and obey Him. We ask that all visitors and guests who may wish to receive the Sacrament kindly speak to an Elder or the Pastor before or after the service.

PREFACE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise. PROPER PREFACE It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, Holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God. And now we bless You that in Jesus Christ You have shown us Your plan for us to live forever. As Jesus proclaims, I am the resurrection and the life, we find in Him the fullness of Your forgiving and limitless love. By the working of the Holy Spirit, grant us grace to grow in faith throughout this Passiontide, remaining steadfast in hope as we await the joys of heaven, where we will join in the eternal chorus of angels and archangels giving You unending praise. SANCTUS LSB pg. 208 Holy, Holy, Holy Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth adored; Heav n and earth with full acclaim shout the glory of Your name. Sing hosanna in the highest, sing hosanna to the Lord; Truly blest is He Who comes in the name of the Lord! WORDS OF INSTITUTION (For those with dietary restrictions, we offer non-alcoholic wine in the cups in the center of the individual trays.) 6 POST-COMMUNION THANKSGIVING We give thanks to You, almighty God, for the gift of forgiveness won by Your Son s offering on the cross and for the strengthening of our souls and bodies by His body and blood. Go with us now and keep us steadfast in Your Word through the blessed days of this great and Holy Week and, beyond that, to our eternal life with Him who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. WORD + OLD TESTAMENT READING Job 41: Smoke pours from its nostrils as from a boiling pot over burning reeds. 21 Its breath sets coals ablaze, and flames dart from its mouth. 22 Strength resides in its neck; dismay goes before it. 23 The folds of its flesh are tightly joined; they are firm and immovable. 24 Its chest is hard as rock, hard as a lower millstone. 25 When it rises up, the mighty are terrified; they retreat before its thrashing. 26 The sword that reaches it has no effect, nor does the spear or the dart or the javelin. 27 Iron it treats like straw and bronze like rotten wood. 28 Arrows do not make it flee; sling-stones are like chaff to it. 29 A club seems to it but a piece of straw; it laughs at the rattling of the lance. 30 Its undersides are jagged potsherds, leaving a trail in the mud like a threshing sledge. 31 It makes the depths churn like a boiling caldron and stirs up the sea like a pot of ointment. 32 It leaves a glistening wake behind it; one would think the deep had white hair. 33 Nothing on earth is its equal a creature without fear. 34 It looks down on all that are haughty; it is king over all that are proud. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

EPISTLE Philippians 2:5 11 Christ s example of humility 5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to His own advantage; 7 rather, He made Himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to death even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please Stand HOLY GOSPEL John 12:20-43 The triumphal entry The Gospel according to St. John the 12th chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. 20 Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the festival. 21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. Sir, they said, we would like to see Jesus. 22 Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus. 23 Jesus replied, The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Very truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds. 25 Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. 26 Whoever serves Me must follow Me; and where I am, My servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves Me. 27 Now My soul is troubled, and what shall I say? Father, save Me from this hour? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. 28 Father, glorify Your name! Then a voice came from heaven, I have glorified it, and will glorify it again. 29 The crowd that was there and heard it said it had thundered; others said an angel had spoken to Him.

30 Jesus said, This voice was for your benefit, not Mine. 31 Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. 32 And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people to Myself. 33 He said this to show the kind of death He was going to die. 34 The crowd spoke up, We have heard from the Law that the Messiah will remain forever, so how can you say, The Son of Man must be lifted up? Who is this Son of Man? 35 Then Jesus told them, You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. Whoever walks in the dark does not know where they are going. 36 Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light. When He had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid Himself from them. 37 Even after Jesus had performed so many signs in their presence, they still would not believe in Him. 38 This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet: Lord, who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 39 For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere: 40 He has blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts, so they can neither see with their eyes, nor understand with their hearts, nor turn and I would heal them. 41 Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus glory and spoke about Him. 42 Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in Him. But because of the Pharisees they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue; 43 for they loved human praise more than praise from God. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. Please Be Seated CHILDREN S MESSAGE SONG OF PRAISE LSB 441 Ride On, Ride On In Majesty SERMON On Earth Is Not His Equal Job 41:20-34
