ORDER OF WORSHIP FOR REFORMATION DAY October 28, 2018 Officiate Pastor Douglas Bergelin Lay Minister 8:00 am-larry Beyer -Ted Fuller Acolytes 8:00 am-hailey Fincutter -Isabella Burback Musician Kathy Fortlage Children s Bulletin & Basket There are special bulletins for children. If your child did not receive one, ask the usher. There is also a Children s Basket in the narthex that contains crayon and pencil packets along with children s books and Christian coloring books. We love having children in worship and sometimes they need additional stimulation to keep them interested. These items are there for your children to enjoy. Please return items to the basket at the end of the service. Members In the event that you or your family may need Pastoral care or comfort, contact the Pastor or church office. Due to certain policies, some facilities cannot share that you or a loved one have been admitted and are in need of comfort or counseling and many times the church is notified days after an admittance to a facility has happened. In your time of need, please don t hesitate to contact the Pastor by calling his cell number or the church office, which are listed on the back of the bulletin or Grapevine. Visitors Visitors are asked to stop at the welcome center in the narthex where you will find information about our church, newsletters, devotional materials and other items we hope you will find helpful. Please be sure to sign the attendance book that you find in the pew and is passed around during the offering. Luther Rose AS WE GATHER While 2017 was the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, our celebrations continue into the 501st year since Martin Luther posted the Ninety-five Theses on the practice of indulgences. The Reformation is a celebration of freedom in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. This can particularly be found in today s Epistle from Romans 3. In a marvelous, great exchange, Christ takes our unrighteousness and gives us His righteousness. Even though we all sin and fall short of the glory of God, we are justified by God s grace, as a gift. We celebrate God s love and activity on our behalf to save us. For Our Guests: Hymnal Key-LSB is the Maroon Hymnal, WOV is the smaller Blue Hymnal

+ PREPARATION + BRING FORWARD 95 THESES OPENING HYMN LSB 656 A Mighty Fortress is Our God Please Stand INVOCATION & OPENING SENTENCES In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. Come, behold the works of the Lord. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth. He will be exalted among the nations. He will be exalted in the earth. The Lord of hosts is with us; The God of Jacob is our fortress. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION God indeed is our refuge and strength, our help and our fortress. Yet we often choose to flee from the refuge of the Lord. We abandon the strength and safety of God, trusting in our own strength and power. The apostle Paul writes that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. And Jesus says that everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. As we enter the house of the Lord and call upon Him for His good and gracious gifts, let us consider our enslavement to sin and our continued shortcomings as God s people. Silence for reflection Heavenly Father, We have sinned against You in our thoughts, words, and actions. We have sinned as individuals and as a community. We have ignored neighbors in need. We have caused divisions among Your people. We have sought refuge in the things of this world and not in You. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us back to You, our refuge and strength. While we have indeed all fallen short of the glory of God, we are all also justified by God s grace as a gift. Though we have been slaves to sin, God has set us free in the death and resurrection of His Son, Jesus Christ. As a called and ordained servant of the risen Christ and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. The Son has set us free, and we are free indeed. Amen.

THE APOSTLES CREED All: I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. 8 TH GRADE PROFESSION OF FAITH service only Please Be Seated + LITURGY OF THE SACRAMENT + We celebrate the Lord s Supper OUR COMMUNION PRACTICE Celebrating the Lord s Supper is an expression of our unity in the true Christian faith. In the Sacrament we are joined in a very close, personal and intimate way with Christ and with one another. We believe that when a person partakes of the Sacrament they are also confessing their unreserved agreement with the doctrine and practice that is proclaimed from the altar and pulpit of which the Sacrament is administered. In his small Catechism, Martin Luther gives us guidelines for self-examination of our faith and our worthiness to receive Christ s atoning lifeblood. Therefore, we welcome all to the Lord s Table who first have been baptized in the name of the Triune God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, are in agreement with this statement, and then with heartfelt conviction can boldly proclaim I believe that + Jesus is my only Lord and Savior from sin, death and the devil; + I am a sinner in need of God s forgiveness;

+ Jesus Christ is present in the Sacrament, and the bread and wine I receive are the true body and blood of Christ; + God assures me that my sins have been forgiven and that I have life and salvation through faith in Him; + And then as He enables me, I pledge to amend my sinful life, to thank and praise, serve and obey Him. We ask that all visitors and guests who may wish to receive the Sacrament kindly speak to an Elder or the Pastor before or after the service. PREFACE The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise. PROPER PREFACE It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Whom God put forward as a propitiation by His blood, to be received by faith. This was to show His righteousness so that He might be just and the justifier of all who have faith in Jesus. Therefore, with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing: SANCTUS WORDS OF INSTITUTION DISTRIBUTION HYMNS LSB pg. 178 "Holy, Holy Holy, Lord Holy, holy, holy Lord, Lord God of pow r and might: Heav n and earth are full of Your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest (For those with dietary restrictions, we offer non-alcoholic wine in the cups in the center of the individual trays.) LSB 617 O Lord, We Praise Thee LSB 644 The Church is One Foundation

COMMUNION DISMISSAL BLESSING POST-COMMUNION THANKSGIVING Let us pray. Gracious God, our heavenly Father, You have given us a foretaste of the feast to come in the Holy Supper of Your Son s body and blood. Help us to abide in Christ and His Word that sets us free, through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. + WORD + FIRST READING Romans 12:1-8 1 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. 2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. 3 For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. 4 For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function, 5 so we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. 6 Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; 7 if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; 8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. EPISTLE 1 Peter 4: Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins. 9 Show hospitality to one another without grumbling. 10 As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God's varied grace: 11 whoever speaks, as one who speaks oracles of God; whoever serves, as one who serves by the strength that God supplies in order that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please Stand

ALLELUIA LSB pg. 190 Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. GOSPEL READING John 17:14-24 The Holy Gospel according to St. John the 17th chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. 14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask that You take them out of the world, but that You keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. 18 As You sent Me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate Myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth. 20 I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that You have sent Me. 22 The glory that you have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and You in Me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that You sent Me and loved them even as You loved Me. 24 Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, may be with Me where I am, to see My glory that you have given Me because You loved Me before the foundation of the world. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. CHILDREN S MESSAGE Please Be Seated SONG OF PRAISE LSB 556 Dear Christians, One and All Rejoice vss. 1-4, 6 & 7 SERMON God s Stewards: Singular yet Plural GATHERING OF THE OFFERINGS & GREET THOSE AROUND YOU As the gifts are gathered, we ask that all worshipers sign the Record of Fellowship, indicating Communion attendance if offered and then pass the booklet to the person next to you in the pew. When all have signed the book, pass it back to the end of the pew. To our visitors: This is a time in our service when congregation members give of the gifts God has given them to support the work of their congregation. You are welcome but not obligated to participate in supporting our ministries. We are blessed to have you worship with us. Please come again.
