ORDER OF WORSHIP FOR TWENTIETH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST October 7, 2018 Officiate Pastor Douglas Bergelin Lay Minister 8:00 am-bob Nass -Ted Frank Acolytes 8:00 am-brady Fincutter -Landon Pfingsten Musician Kathy Fortlage Children s Bulletin & Basket There are special bulletins for children. If your child did not receive one, ask the usher. There is also a Children s Basket in the narthex that contains crayon and pencil packets along with children s books and Christian coloring books. We love having children in worship and sometimes they need additional stimulation to keep them interested. These items are there for your children to enjoy. Please return items to the basket at the end of the service. Members In the event that you or your family may need Pastoral care or comfort, contact the Pastor or church office. Due to certain policies, some facilities cannot share that you or a loved one have been admitted and are in need of comfort or counseling and many times the church is notified days after an admittance to a facility has happened. In your time of need, please don t hesitate to contact the Pastor by calling his cell number or the church office, which are listed on the back of the bulletin or Grapevine. Visitors Visitors are asked to stop at the welcome center in the narthex where you will find information about our church, newsletters, devotional materials and other items we hope you will find helpful. Please be sure to sign the attendance book that you find in the pew and is passed around during the offering. A man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. Genesis 2:24 AS WE GATHER They shall become one flesh Genesis 2:24b. These timeless words of God speak of the arranged marriage we have received as a gift from our Creator. Man and woman are not the same; we are different. Yet our differences are part of the Maker s design for us to find completion in each other. So it is with Christ. Only in Christ will we find our true identity! Our marriages this side of eternity are arranged by God to reflect the marriage He has established with us for eternity! Christ, our Bridegroom, has cleansed us and made us His own through His blood, shed on the cross. When we are drawn to Him by His Spirit and receive Him through faith, we become the very Bride of Christ. Living as one in this relationship with our Bridegroom and Savior, we then open our eyes to see the blessing He gives to us in the union of Christian marriage. May our Bridegroom bless His Bride as we meet Him at His altar today! For Our Guests: Hymnal Key-LSB is the Maroon Hymnal, WOV is the smaller Blue Hymnal
OPENING HYMN + PREPARATION + LSB 605 Father Welcomes Please Stand INVOCATION Pastor: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. People: Amen. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Pastor: In a time of silence and prayer, let us approach the Father s throne of grace. We take a moment of silence for personal reflection and confession of our sins. Pastor: People: Pastor: People: Most merciful Father, We confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have drifted from Your commands, choosing to go our own separate ways. We have not honored You as our Creator, nor have we honored one another in love. By the cleansing work of our Redeemer, remove from us our sins of thought, word, and deed so that we worship You in Spirit and in truth. In Jesus name we pray. Amen. Only in Christ Jesus are we made complete complete as God s creation and completely cleansed of our guilt and sin. Upon this your confession, I, as a called and ordained servant of the Lord, announce His grace to all of you and, in the stead and by the command of our Lord Jesus Christ, forgive you all of your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. THE NICENE CREED All: I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, light of light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by Whom all things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate. He suffered and was buried. And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, Whose kingdom will have no end.
And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son, Who with the Father and Son together is worshiped and glorified, Who spoke by the prophets. And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic church, I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. Please Be Seated + LITURGY OF THE SACRAMENT + We celebrate the Lord s Supper OUR COMMUNION PRACTICE Celebrating the Lord s Supper is an expression of our unity in the true Christian faith. In the Sacrament we are joined in a very close, personal and intimate way with Christ and with one another. We believe that when a person partakes of the Sacrament they are also confessing their unreserved agreement with the doctrine and practice that is proclaimed from the altar and pulpit of which the Sacrament is administered. In his small Catechism, Martin Luther gives us guidelines for self-examination of our faith and our worthiness to receive Christ s atoning lifeblood. Therefore, we welcome all to the Lord s Table who first have been baptized in the name of the Triune God Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, are in agreement with this statement, and then with heartfelt conviction can boldly proclaim I believe that + Jesus is my only Lord and Savior from sin, death and the devil; + I am a sinner in need of God s forgiveness; + Jesus Christ is present in the Sacrament, and the bread and wine I receive are the true body and blood of Christ; + God assures me that my sins have been forgiven and that I have life and salvation through faith in Him; + And then as He enables me, I pledge to amend my sinful life, to thank and praise, serve and obey Him. We ask that all visitors and guests who may wish to receive the Sacrament kindly speak to an Elder or the Pastor before or after the service. PREFACE Pastor: The Lord be with you. People: And also with you.
Pastor: People: Pastor: People: Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give Him thanks and praise. PROPER PREFACE Pastor: It is truly good, right, and salutary that we should at all times and in all places give thanks to You, holy Lord, almighty Father, everlasting God, for the countless blessings You so freely bestow on us and all Your people. Above all, we give thanks for Your boundless love shown to us when You sent Your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, into our flesh and laid on Him our sin, giving Him into death that we might not die eternally. He Himself has arranged marriage to give the world a picture of the communion between Him and His Bride, the Church, which now gathers to receive His goodness and grace. Therefore with angels and archangels and with all the company of heaven we laud and magnify Your glorious name, evermore praising You and singing: SANCTUS LSB 961 Holy, Holy, Holy Holy, holy, holy Lord God of Sabaoth; Heav n and earth are full of Your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed, blessed, blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord Hosanna in the highest. WORDS OF INSTITUTION DISTRIBUTION HYMNS (For those with dietary restrictions, we offer non-alcoholic wine in the cups in the center of the individual trays.) COMMUNION DISMISSAL BLESSING LSB 570 Just As I Am, Without one Plea LSB 575 My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less POST-COMMUNION THANKSGIVING Pastor: Let us pray. We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this sacred gift of our Savior s body and blood. Married to Christ by grace through faith, and strengthened by His Word and Spirit, grant that we go forth to reflect who He is to the world He died to save; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. People: Amen.
+ WORD + OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 43:1-3a But now thus says the LORD, He Who created you, O Jacob, He Who formed you, O Israel: Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are Mine. 2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. 3 For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt as your ransom, Cush and Seba in exchange for you. Pastor: This is the Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God. EPISTLE Pastor: People: 2 Corinthians 5: For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that one has died for all, therefore all have died; 15 and He died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for Him who for their sake died and was raised. 16 From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard Him thus no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 All this is from God, Who through Christ reconciled us to Himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making His appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake He made Him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Please Stand ALLELUIA LSB pg. 190 Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia.
GOSPEL READING Luke 19:1-10 Pastor: The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke the 19th chapter. People: Glory to You, O Lord. 1 He entered Jericho and was passing through. 2 And behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector and was rich. 3 And he was seeking to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was small in stature. 4 So he ran on ahead and climbed up into a sycamore tree to see Him, for He was about to pass that way. 5 And when Jesus came to the place, He looked up and said to Him, Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for I must stay at your house today. 6 So he hurried and came down and received Him joyfully. 7 And when they saw it, they all grumbled, He has gone in to be the guest of a man who is a sinner. 8 And Zacchaeus stood and said to the Lord, Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor. And if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I restore it fourfold. 9 And Jesus said to him, Today salvation has come to this house, since he also is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost. Pastor: This is the Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to You, O Christ. Please Be Seated CHILDREN S MESSAGE SONG OF PRAISE SERMON LSB 863 Our Father, By Whose Name God s Stewards: God s Stewards GATHERING OF THE OFFERINGS & GREET THOSE AROUND YOU As the gifts are gathered, we ask that all worshipers sign the Record of Fellowship, indicating Communion attendance if offered and then pass the booklet to the person next to you in the pew. When all have signed the book, pass it back to the end of the pew. To our visitors: This is a time in our service when congregation members give of the gifts God has given them to support the work of their congregation. You are welcome but not obligated to participate in supporting our ministries. We are blessed to have you worship with us. Please come again.
