TEMPLE EMANU-EL BULLETIN Temple Emanu-El th Ave Tuscaloosa, AL (205) Steven L. Jacobs, Rabbi Joel Whitman, President November 2011 Cheshvan-Kislev 5772 From Rabbi Jacobs Dear Friends: During our High Holy Days last month, I made mention of a New Adult Education Opportunity which our Chairperson Diana Schwab has delightfully taken to calling "Re-Jewvination!". Based in my recently-published text 'The Jewish Experience: An Introduction to Jewish History and Jewish Life' (Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 2011), complete with amazing pictures!, here is an opportunity for all of us to return to Religious School and increase our Jewish knowledge through some initial readings (the chapters are short!) and lots of discussion. The sessions will address: (1) Jewish History (2) Jewish Texts (3) Jewish Philosophy (4) Jewish Theology (5) The Holiday Cycle (6) The Life Cycle (7) The Present (8) The Future Right now, we're thinking of a brown-bag lunchtime gathering, Sunday afternoons, 12:15-1:30, twice a month to coincide with Torah Study, 11:00-12:00, and beginning after the first of the year. Come join us as, together, we return and renew our Jewish roots. And invite others in the Jewish community who are not yet members of our Congregation. 2 From the President: Good things happen for good people. The High Holidays were well attended. Congregational participation throughout the services made them personal and meaningful. The Sisterhood deserves much credit for the sweet table after Rosh Hashanah services and for the great break the fast meal after Yom Kippur. The High Holiday parking problem became a non-problem. This was due to the cooperation of the University Police Department and Captain Lee Harris and the willingness of our congregants to overcome some inconveniences. Thank you all! The congregants, along with Temple Emanu-El s Religious School and Hillel students conducted a Simchat Torah service on Friday, October 21 st. It was a unique opportunity for all to see the next Jewish generation. We have two important up-coming events. On November 13 th, there will be a rededication of the Bloom Hillel Torah and on December 4 th, the Sisterhood Brisket Bash dinner. Please take the time to participate at both events. There are plans for a Jazz night at the Temple sometime in the spring. Approximately 36 of the new Shabbat prayer books will be in use in the near future. We are asking you to consider buying personal copies or donating copies to the Temple in the name of loved ones. While the previous year was a good one the next will be better because many of you have committed your time and resources to making it so! 4 Simchat Torah Temple and Hillel held a cooperative Simchat Torah service on Friday, October 21, with a rousing Torah march that all enjoyed and 3 parshat readings Bereshit in Hebrew by Bonnie Oppenheimer, the others in English. Children and their families, along with Religious School teachers, helped with the service, which was conducted by Joanna Jacobs, because the rabbi was out of town. In the photo at the right, Annika West, a first grader, reads a portion in English, while Joanna, Religious School coordinator Lauren Ward, and Hillel students Regina Broda and Holly Appell look on. The service was followed by a Southern Shabbat dinner (fried chicken, beans, the works) for a last meal in the Sukkah. TEMPLE BOARD ACTIONS The Board voted on July 10 to move our Friday services to 6:30, in order to accommodate Hillel students who want to attend both Hillel Shabbat dinners and our services. At the Oct. 16 meeting, we agreed to have Rabbi Jacobs ask Rabbi Bernie Honan to inspect our Torahs and give a price for repairing and re-inking them. The board also made a policy about placement of memorial plaques on the Temple wall: they will be placed by date of death, not by family groups. JUAF sells game-day parking passes The Jewish United Appeal Fund of Tuscaloosa, Inc. (JUAF) is a united appeal fund as defined by the laws of Alabama, and has as its members Hillel and Temple Emanu-El of Tuscaloosa. The JUAF makes annual distributions to its constituent members. Its officers are Joel Whitman, President; Star Bloom, Vice President; Don Siegal, Secretary; and Anna Singer, Treasurer. JUAF holds a fundraiser each year. This year, Temple and Hillel people are cooperating with parking in our lot to make JUAF s annual income. Parking helpers for the first 2 games were Joanna Jacobs, Jason Fleishman, Mike Honan, Jeff Drexler, Stephanie Jacobs, and Anna Singer. Thanks to all for their assistance. Please volunteer to be available to help park cars for LSU and Georgia Southern. The Nov 5 LSU kickoff time will be 7 pm cst, so parking will officially be from 3 to 6 pm. However, it will be necessary for some gatekeepers to be available from 10 until 3 as well since parkers will arrive earlier for tailgating. Nov 19 th, Ga. So. game will kick off at 1 pm so parking that day will be 9 am to noon. Helping with parking leaves you plenty of time to get to the game, or get home to watch it! However, nobody is comped for game parking, as this is a fundraiser. Please contact annajsinger@hotmail.com or bamahillel@gmail.com to volunteer.
