Jacobs, Rabbi Joel Whitman, President April 2012 Nissan-Iyar 5772 From Rabbi Jacobs Be Careful What You Wish For Dear Friends, Our celebration of Pesach our Festival of Freedom will soon be upon us and I very much forward to sharing our First Night Seder with you on Friday/Erev Shabbat 6 April beginning at 5:30 (Reservations to Anna Singer, please.). This has led me to thinking what I would wish for after wishing for freedom for our Jewish People and for all humankind. (I still find it unbelievable that now, 2012, there are still places in our world where human beings are enslaved by other human beings. An obscenity to be sure and an affront to G-d, to say the very least!) Thus, my preliminary list to which I genuinely, appreciatively, and sincerely invite you to add (We will published other wishes in subsequent issues of our excellent Temple Bulletin): 1) I wish for good health for myself, my family, my friends, my community, and all human beings. 2) I wish for freedom from want for all humanity--that no one should ever again go to sleep hungry especially children except by their own choosing. 3) I wish for a world of peace where war between nation-states and inside nation-states is truly a thing of the past which our descendants will only read about in books and online and view in historical documentaries or fictional films. 4) I wish for an American political system which inspires persons of integrity with a commitment to our country and a global vision instead of the ongoing bitter debates which mar far too much of our political nonconversations revealing the ugly side of those who engage in them and diminish us all in the process. 5) I wish for our beloved State of Israel a Jewish harmony where all differences in our own religious traditions are respected by all who live there. 6) I wish for real medical cures for all the tragic ills which affect and infect us as human beings and which shorten our lives unncessesarily. 7) I wish that every day every one of us learns something new and also have an opportunity to laugh joyously. I could go on but I will stop here. After all, 7 is a good Jewish number! And I invite you to add to my list. Shalom, Rabbi Steve Jacobs The University of Alabama Department of Religious Studies, 212 Manly Hall Box , Tuscaloosa, AL (205) Fax (205) sjacobs@bama.ua.edu Website INSIDE: Last call for reservations! 2 From the President: Have a Happy Passover. Please join us at the Temple Emanu-El Community Seder on Friday, April 5th, We all look forward to seeing you and enjoying your company. Our Temple, yours and mine, needs more than stakeholders. Yes, everyone who pays dues is a stakeholder but we need those who will share the burdens of running a successful congregation. We need your participation on Temple committees such as: Ritual, Education, Social, Membership, Adult Education, Financial, and Outreach (Caring Days, Meals on Wheels, and others). We need your knowledge and expertise to help share the load. You might even be the person to run for a Temple office. Our Temple serves people and we need help in providing these s. You are needed to help determine what our Temple is and what it could become! Please consider being more than a stakeholder and become an active participant. We look forward to your active participation.
