Jacobs, Rabbi Joel Whitman, President March 2012 Adar-Nissan 5772 From Rabbi Jacobs Purim and Pesach: Birds of a Feather! Dear Friends, This month we celebrate our victory over our near-genocide at the hands of the Persian Prime Minister Haman. Regardless or perhaps despite historical problems associated with the event, it is certainly emblematic and symbolic of all past attempts to do us in. Next month we will celebrate Pesach (Passover), our liberation of the slavery in historical Egypt which lasted, according to our traditional understanding, ten generations or four hundred years. The late professor of Jewish history at Columbia University, NY, Salo Baron, spoke disparagingly of what he called "the lachrymose view of Jewish history," i.e. that all-too-often we Jews tend to emphasize and overemphasize the negativities of our past and fail to celebrate the joys of our successes. While there is limited truth in his observation, Baron himself failed to take into account the fullness of the Jewish religious calendar that has sustained our people since our birth. To be sure, there are Tisha B'Av and Yom Ha-Shoah and even Yom Kippur, but there are also Rosh Ha- Shanah, Sukkot, Simchat Torah, Chanukkah, Tu B'Shvat, Purim, Pesach, and Shavuot. While the former are momentarily depressing, the latter are momentarily exhilarating and give joy each in its own way. Taken together, the fullness of our Jewish religious calendar reflects the human journey, mixing together the good with the bad, the up with the down, the sad with the happy. What emerges at the end of every calendar cycle is the most joyous fact of all: We are here; our enemies are not. We succeeded; they failed. What else is there to say other than to be happy celebrating Purim and Pesach???
