Our address N. Midland, Joliet, IL From the Rabbi s Study As I write this article, the High Holidays for 5777 are behind us. The Temple Sukkah is up and awaiting decoration by our Sunday School children. All is prepared for the holiday of Sukkot which begins the evening of Oct. 16. The holiday and gaiety of Sukkot stand in stark contrast to our High Holidays. Temporary living quarters are erected all over Israel and in Jewish communities world wide all in celebration of the fall harvest. In more temperate climates, Jews live for a week in their Sukkot. Meals are eaten and sleeping quarters are arranged as Jews live and sleep out under the stars just as was done in ancient Israel. The rules for a kosher Sukkah are quite lengthy but essentially a Sukkah must have at least three walls, be made of temporary materials like wood and canvas, they must be larger than 3ft. Square, and they cannot have more than one half of the ceiling fully covered. A Sukkah cannot be built under the overhang of a home or under a tree because one must be readily able to see the stars on a clear night. That is why, in Israel, apartment houses stagger the apartment balconies so that a Sukkah can be built on them and also meet the visible sky regulations. I have been in a Sukkah that is so small only one person at a time can enter, and I ve been in a Sukkah that easily holds 150 people. (It was in the courtyard at the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York). During Sukkot, we display symbols of the harvest using a Lulav, made of palm fronds together with branches of Myrtle and Willow, and an Etrog, a fruit native to Israel that is very similar to a Lemon. These beautiful harvest symbols together with the prayers of our religious services are very lovely and everyone is encouraged to participate. The Fall holiday schedule closes on a somber note on Shemini Atzeret with the recitation of Yizkor and is foll-
2 owed by joyous celebration again that evening as we gather to hear the last words of the Torah and then roll the scroll back to the beginning of Genesis as we begin our study once more. I hope everyone takes the opportunity to step into our Sukkah, have a bite to eat and visualize what life may have been like at harvest time in ancient Israel. Rabbi Rubovits Oct. 16 Oct. 17 Oct. 18 Oct. 24 Oct. 25 HOLIDAY DATES Erev Sukkot 1st Day Sukkot 2nd Day Sukkot Shemini Atzeret Simchat Torah CANDLE LIGHTING TIMES Oct. 16 Erev Sukkot 5:50pm Oct. 17 1st Day Sukkot 5:49pm Oct. 18 2nd Day Sukkot 5:47pm Oct. 24 Shemini Atzeret 5:38pm NOTES We need your eyes and ears. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. THANK YOU I would like to thank Bob Abrams, Wendy Berman, Louise Freeman, Stacie Freeman, Julia Jacobs, Myles Jacobs, Dianne Parker, Allen Pollock, Toby Rohowsky, Michelle Rubovits, Tom Severson, and Linda Trager for their many hours of preparation and practice in making the choir a success. Karen The Hadassah Book club will meet on Thursday, October 27th at 7:00 PM at the home of Lea Stuhr. We will be discussing The Museum of Extraordinary Things by Alice Hoffman. This novel is an enchanting love story rich with history and a sense of place. Book bag copies available in the office. Call Beth to reserve a copy. FROM RABBI S STUDY Let me begin by saying that our High Holiday Services this year were terrific! Our Cantor s, Dr. Kranzler and Richard Bessman treated us to some very beautiful and meaningful prayer melodies and provided all of us with both beauty and time to consider the dialogue of the services. Our choir was exceptional! Thanks to all who participated and to Karen Luksa who led the group plus organizing all the rehearsals and the music. I hope my messages each day gave everyone food for thought and consideration. In that same vein, I must apologize to anyone who felt uncomfortable or was upset with my Rosh Hashanah message regarding the LGBT community. In hindsight, the material I presented was too controversial and not for our High Holiday services. Instead, I should make plans to present this at one of my Sunday morning lectures or maybe even at a general Temple meeting. I make it my practice to welcome everyone in to our Temple. Michelle and I have some very fine acquaintances who are also members of the LGBT community whom we have entertained in our home many times. Again, I am sorry for causing anyone to feel ill at ease with my remarks. Please know that I appreciate both positive and negative criticism to any sermons I present. This shows me that our congregation is thinking and considering my words and that is a very good thing. Rabbi Rubovits
