Firsts and Lasts Message from Rabbi Michael L. Feshbach From the Rabbi Adult Education For me, at least, it will be a year filled with firsts and lasts. Among other things, this will be my last High Holy Days spent with you. Boxes. This may be a bit early, as we still have an entire year together, but I am already beginning to think about boxes. I remember: A message about boxes was one of the first things I shared with you, 15 years ago. And that seems, in its own way, an appropriate metaphor for these Days of Awe. For to behold a box is to wonder what is inside. To look within is an act in keeping with the spirit of the season. Or, in packing, what do we take with us, and what do we leave behind? What is essential and what discarded? What of use is given away, and what did we acquire that we never really needed in the first place? My first High Holy Days with you came in the immediate aftermath of a terrible act of terror carried out against our country. I remember, still, my messages from that time: that we should never stop dancing. That we make meaning out of the raw substance of our lives. And that we should choose what kind of legacy of life we will leave to those we love. Is the world any more safe, any less mad now, then it was then? What a time it has been. If I were able to do so, I would take out of the box before me fear and hate, divisiveness and demonization of others who are different. I would put into the box, to take with me, love and unity, a delight in diversity, a way to reach out and make connections, to stay true to the group we come from, and delight in the discovery of difference. Into my box would go chopsticks and sushi bowls, Turkish coffee and a Palestinian scarf, Indian tea and Russian vodka, Italian oil and Greek cheese, Spanish rice and Mexican spice. I look around my home and see the world. A mezuzah marks a Jewish space, but inside points out, and I remember that we are connected with the entire world. And now, at this most intensely Jewish time of the year, may we also remember our common humanity. First and last. It is a theme, of course, that brings us to the end and the beginning, the circle of life and the source of life. Remember that it is not just a message from Christian tradition (where, in the Book of Revelations, there is a reference to the Alpha and Omega it had to have been, originally, I assume, the Aleph and Tav. ) It is also Isaiah, who depicts God as saying I am the first, and I am the last; without me there is no Other. To step into the mystical for a moment: without the All, there is no apart. Without the we, there is no me. We are so upset about that which divides us. But without that thread that binds, that connection to everyone, there would be no distinction and differentiation and individual identity at all. Or, more down to earth. May this be a holiday season filled with hope for humanity, meaningfulness and spirituality, insight and fulfillment. May we remember what will last, and know what should come first in our lives. May we unpack our souls, and remember what is important, and find a way to be there for each other, today and tomorrow. Sincerely, Michael L. Feshbach Rabbi Page 3

From the Cantor Jewish Mindful Living Message from Cantor Lisa L. Levine Dear Friends, Fall is a time for turning. The leaves turn from green to red then brown. The ground gets turned and readied to sleep for winter. We turn our clocks back in order to enjoy a bit more sunlight as the days become shorter. Spiritually, fall is a time for turning inward to examine the year which has past and cleanse ourselves from negative or harmful actions, words, thoughts or deeds that might be weighing heavily on our hearts. It s also a time to make new priorities for change. Our bodies are preparing for the long winter ahead by slowing down. We might feel less energetic or tired from the high activity of summer and our travels. However and whatever we are turning to face this season, I pray that all of us might find comfort from the changes that inevitably come with fall. Instead of regret and anger, perhaps it is time for us to embrace the transitions of our lives and look ahead with optimism and with hope for the future. I heard recently that hope is a major factor in good health, healing and even our day-to-day happiness. If we nurture hope that things will turn out well or even that we believe we can change, it can turn things around in our lives. Personally, this has been a time of great hope for me as my mission and campaign promoting peace, healing and non-violence in our world has taken hold over the summer. I ve created an entire platform for promoting this mission, called Bridge To Peace, which is the result of my hospital chaplaincy, studies in Jewish renewal and my reaction to what is going on in the world today. I am committed to joining others who are like minded about putting an end to gun violence and sending the message that hate and intolerance have no place in our society, our communities or our hearts. Through these songs of healing and hope, the waves of change have begun to resonate outward and make an impact on keeping faith that together, we can repair our world. May this New Year of 5777 bring a renewed sense of acceptance, openness, tolerance, love and light to all of our spirits. May we be blessed with good health, shining eyes and an open mind to promote kindness and positive energy in the world. Perhaps this is the path to turning hate to love, turning mourning into dancing and despair into enduring hope. 5 Rabbi-Educator Message from Rabbi Rachel Ackerman Rabbi-Educator Every now and then someone will enter the building, alone or with a friend or family, and start slowly walking down the school wing hallway shuffling a few steps, pausing, a few more steps, and then I hear, Here I am! These individuals, many of whom are in town visiting, coming for a funeral, or who are current members and teachers, are perusing the photos of teenage students donning white robes, trying to locate themselves in their Confirmation picture. The pictures mark the last educational lifecycle event of a child s time at Temple Shalom, beginning with their Consecration upon kindergarten (or a later matriculation into our religious school), continuing with a bar or bat mitzvah, typically in 7th and 8th grade, and then finally reaching 10th grade Confirmation and graduation. (We also have many students who continue on in our post-confirmation program and stay with us formally through 12th grade. You can see their Post-Con graduation pictures on the wall as well.) Confirmation is one of the newest of Judaism s rituals, only about 200 years old. It emerged in Germany in lieu of bar mitzvah (this was quite some time before girls had an equivalent bat mitzvah ceremony). But, as the ritual of bar and bat mitzvah came back into practice, Reform Jewish congregations retained Confirmation, Temple Shalom being no exception. Well, perhaps, we are an exception. But for a different reason. Continuing Jewish education through 10th grade is not just an encouraged option, it is a requirement for any Temple students who have a bat or bar mitzvah here. Upon receiving a date for their bat or bar mitzvah, students and their families are sent a pledge that must be signed and returned. The full wording of the pledge can be found on page 10 of our bat/bar mitzvah guide, Teacher of Torah, Leader of Prayer (TTLP), which can be found here: TTLP-2012_10.pdf An excerpt of the pledge reads: I understand that a Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremony is the beginning of a Jewish life and not its culmination. It is a step on a journey, a gateway to new levels of learning and observance. In accepting the date of a Bar/Bat Mitzvah at Temple Shalom, and in celebrating this sacred occasion in our synagogue, I understand and accept the commitment to continue formal Jewish studies at least until graduation from our Religious School at the end of Tenth Grade, or an equivalent program of study and Jewish learning. A bar/bat mitzvah is a significant milestone for Jewish students and their families. It marks a formal welcoming of a 12- or 13-year-old into the Jewish community as someone who has transitioned from having the option of performing some mitzvot (commandments) to the someone who has the obligation to learn, study, and choose how to engage with all (or at least most) of the commandments. A bat/bar mitzvah can count in a minyan, choose how to engage with the laws of keeping kosher, must navigate the obligation of giving tzedekah, and much more. Temple Shalom s religious school strives to provide its students with the tools, knowledge, and skills necessary in order to learn how to make Jewish choices and live Jewish lives, but we also recognize the limitations of doing that by the time a child turns 12 or 13. These limitations are due in some part to the busy lives of our students and their families, but in large part these limitations are due to the fact that our 12- and 13-year-olds are just beginning to enter adolescence. As they get older, particularly as they grow into high school students, they become more mature in their conversations, they can be exposed to deeper and higher-level content, their capacity to formulate ideas and opinions dramatically improves, they can begin to make serious decisions about how Judaism will be incorporated into their lives, they can engage in profound experiential opportunities, their friendships strengthen through meaningful Temple Shalom members Noah Dalbey, Mollie Dalbey, Jackie Gordon, and Matthew Marks rock their Temple Shalom sunglasses on Shabbat at URJ 6 Points Sports Academy. Temple Shalom 9th Grader Simon Chervenak reads Torah during Shabbat morning services at URJ Camp Harlam. learning and engaging with community, and they are capable of beginning to figure out who they are Jewishly at the same time they are figuring out how they identify as a teenager and eventual emerging adult. The teen years are critical in the development of Jewish identity, and our 8th- to 10th-grade programs allow for this to happen. continued on page 6 Page 5

Rabbi-Educator (cont) President Message continued from page 5 Message from Rabbi-Educator Reform Judaism holds informed choice as one of its highest values. Informed choice is not about whether or not one will continue to engage Jewishly, but rather how. That is why we give our students choices as they get older. They choose from electives, topics that interest them, what they want to do on retreats, how they want to lead services, what issues are important to them, how to balance tradition with modernity, and the ways they will blend (and often compartmentalize) their Jewish and secular lives. Perhaps the most important informed choice that they will make as an adolescent is not whether they will continue through 10th grade in our religious school program or an equivalent program of study and learning (this is a commitment that families have made far in advance of that, and we fully expect that commitment to be upheld), but whether they will choose to graduate at the end of 10th grade or whether, in addition to graduation, they will choose to be confirmed. While we do require our students to continue through 10th grade, we do not require them to publically confirm their Judaism before the congregation and participate in the Confirmation ceremony. Continuity of their religious education is required, but confirmation is a personal, spiritual affirmation and one we cannot impose upon our students. As TTLP notes, The distinction is terribly important: education, exposure and experience can be required by a community; individual affirmation and acceptance of an identity cannot be. We have students who continue with us through 10th grade and do not participate in the Confirmation ritual. They, no less than their peers who do, have upheld their commitment. And those students who may not end up on our wall in a white robe because they choose not to be confirmed can still be seen on our walls in the post-graduation photographs. We look forward to all of our students, years from now, wandering through our halls as adults, pointing out to their own children the pictures of themselves in their consecration photo during their first few weeks of school, showing them the class wimple hanging in the entranceway that embraced the Torah during their bat/bar mitzvah, perhaps donning a white robe in a Confirmation picture, and finding themselves in their 11th- and 12th-grade post- Con photos. We look forward to continuing to hear the words, Here I am! L Shalom, Rabbi Rachel Ackerman A Prayer for Each of Us, For All of Us Message from Linda Gurevich President, Temple Shalom Dear Members of the Temple Shalom Family, These High Holy Days seem to be filled with an even greater measure of awe than usual has been an extremely challenging year for all of us. It is my hope that every member of the congregation, every lay leader, every member of our senior staff and support staff, will derive the greatest possible benefit from the ten days of awe just ahead and will in the New Year come to realize a consistent stream of blessing and well-being. As events unfolded over this past year, I was privileged to engage in deeply meaningful conversations with more of our members than I ever imagined possible. I learned from you, was inspired by you, and came away with greater and greater confidence in the special goodness of who and what we are as a community. As a result, I feel a connection with you that is strong, vibrant, memorable and meaningful. As these High Holy Days approach, I am humbled by the responsibilities of office still Page 6 ahead and ask for the continuation of your kindness and openness as we traverse expected and unexpected roads together. I am grateful to be walking with you through these days, and I also feel especially grateful to those among you who have accepted posts of leadership in our midst. In this High Holy Day greeting, permit me to remind us all that a part of our liturgy consists of a prayer for our nation. This year it will likely have greater importance to us than in recent memory. I hope that these ten days of awe help each of us clarify our thinking about the choices confronting us in November for our nation, our state, and our local community. Let us meet without fail our responsibilities as citizens to have our voices heard by voting, and may our nation be blessed with wise and responsible officials throughout the entire length and breadth of both elected and appointed office. This is a year of great consequence for us as members of this congregation whose destiny individually and collectively is also bound up with what transpires on November 8 and beyond. Our Rosh Hashanah morning service concludes with the following: Our God and God of our ancestors, Eternal God of all generations: May Your presence in our lives this New Year renew our spirits and renew our strength. May it be a good year. May it be a sweet year. Amen! Shanah tovah, Linda Gurevich president@templeshalom.net

Wise Aging Membership Wise Aging Revisted The Wise Aging program, conceived and co-written by Rabbi Rachel Cowan and Dr. Linda Thal, was first introduced at Temple Shalom over a year ago. We are very grateful to Rabbi Feshbach for his encouragement and support of this program and to Peg MacKnight for organizing our facilitator training. The pilot program began last fall. The group met from 1 to 3 PM every other Tuesday at the temple for a total of twelve sessions. We engaged the book Wise Aging chapter by chapter, guided by us as facilitators. The group came together quickly, and members bonded in trusting and open discussions, resulting in warm relationships, insights, and self-discovery. Our last session ended with a joyous dinner party, and we will be meeting again at intervals for follow-on discussions. We are now initiating plans for another group beginning after the High Holy Days, this time meeting in the evenings. The group is limited to twelve participants. Each person will need to buy the book ($15), a supply of which can be ordered by the office. There is no other associated expense. If you are interested, Katherine in the office will place your name on the list, and we will call participants when the An almost full Sanctuary on June 14, as Temple Shalom hosted Rabbi/Dr. Yehoyada Amir, president of the Reform Rabbis Council in Israel (MARAM) and head of the Israeli Reform rabbinical program at Hebrew Union College in Jerusalem, speaking about Liberal and Reform (Progressive) Judaism in Israel. post-holy Days meeting schedule is finalized. By attending all the group meetings and being fully engaged in the program, all of us have found the Wise Aging program to be a worthwhile experience. Carolyn and Marty Shargel Why Membership Matters Mike Gerecht and Leslie Rubin, Membership Co-Chairs One of the most important things we can do for Temple Shalom is to continue being the warm and welcoming community we are, as we seek new members and new ways to engage existing members. Supporting efforts to attract new members and retain current ones strengthens both our Temple Shalom community and the larger Jewish community a true mitzvah! Temple Shalom s Free First-Year Membership Program Temple Shalom offers an innovative Gift of Membership Program (GOM) that allows new members to join the Temple without paying dues in the current fiscal year, enabling them to try us out at no cost while they discover all that we have to offer. It s an excellent way to attract new members and something few other Temples nationwide are doing. So please, spread the word via Facebook and other social media, in your social circles, and among your Jewish friends and neighbors. After that, it s up to all of us to make sure new members feel welcome and to help them get involved in activities that can strengthen Temple connections. GOM details are available at and a full calendar can also be found on our website, showing the wide range of programs we offer. Every GOM member who continues beyond the first year (a quite high percentage do) benefits themselves and Temple Shalom for years to come by becoming a dues-paying member; on average our members stay over 10 years, supporting and participating in our Jewish community. So do your part next time you are at Temple introduce yourself to someone you don t know and make them feel welcome. Even if you just met a Founding Member, you still just connected with someone you didn t know! Interested in helping out on membership recruitment or retention in any way? Have ideas for how we could grow? New program ideas? Know someone we should reach out to? Contact either Mike Gerecht or Leslie Rubin at membership@templeshalom.net and we ll be glad to speak with you. Page 7

Chavurah Security Grant Renaissance Group The Temple Shalom Chavurah Program As many of you may know, for the past several years, we have had an active Chavurah program at Temple Shalom, and I am always looking for members of the Temple Shalom family to either help form a new Chavurah or join an existing one. Doing this could well be one of the most rewarding and enjoyable experiences of your life. For those of you not familiar with the Chavurah program, let me give you some background: What is a Chavurah? It is a small group of families, couples, or individuals who are members of the larger Temple Shalom family. While there are no set criteria for Chavurah membership, new Chavurot are generally based on a common interest, age group, or family status, such as single persons, childless couples, families with younger or older children, or empty nesters. These groups are self-directed with the responsibility for planning activities resting with the Chavurah members who come together to socialize, to enjoy Jewish living within the Temple community, and to share common interests. Meetings and activities can take place in members homes, at a museum, a restaurant, a park, or at any other place of interest to the group. Chavurah Activities. Typical Chavurah activities include the celebration of Jewish holidays or life cycle events, dinners, theater, learning, or anything that the members wish to do as a group. The Chavurah can also provide comfort and support during times of sadness, illness, and loss. In short, Chavurah members can and will form lasting bonds and become an extended family. I know this well, as my wife and I have been members of a Chavurah family for more than 25 years and it has been one of the highlights of our adult lives. Although several new Chavurot have been formed, these groups (to the best of my knowledge) are not at this time looking for additional members. However, I currently know of two couples and a single man who are looking to form or join a Chavurah, and I would very much like to hear from anyone in the congregation who would like to share the Chavurah experience. The best way for this to happen is for you to me at peachwood1270@verizon.net (or call me at ), expressing your interest in joining or forming a Chavurah. I will send you an application questionnaire that you will return to me. This information will enable me to match you up with other applicants pursuant to the criteria I mentioned above. I hope very much to hear from you soon. Rick Meyers Temple Shalom Receives $75,000 Federal Grant for Security Improvements! The Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded Temple Shalom $75,000 under a grant program designed to improve security at nonprofit facilities in designated regions of the country. We received the maximum amount. The funds will be used to add security cameras, expand our alarm system, update our remote door access controls, and implement other improvements recommended by outside security reviewers. We first applied in 2015, along with over 40 other applicants in the DC area. However, this is a highly competitive grant and only four applicants received funding there is not nearly enough funding available to meet the considerable nationwide interest in the program. This year we applied what we learned from the scoring on our first application and it paid off! Thank you to Executive Director Susan Goutos Zemsky, who initiated our efforts in 2015, as well as grant committee members Mike Gerecht, Gary Houseknecht and Steve Schleien. We are soliciting bids for the security enhancements that were approved, and plan to complete installation in the coming year. FEMA will reimburse our costs as work is completed. Congratulations to Susan and her grantwriting team on their success! A special thank you goes to our grant writer, Mike Gerecht. The Renaissance Group Once again the Renaissance Group has had an active and educational year. Barbara Weinstein from the Religious Action Center spoke at our opening event. Other outings included a visit to the Phillips Collection, the annual Chinese dinner and movie night, a guided tour of Ellicott City followed by another tour of the National Arboretum. A great dinner, catered by the Big Greek Café and held at the newly renovated Party Room in Leisure World, topped off the year. The Renaissance Group seeks to provide a venue to meet fellow congregants and take advantage of Washington s historical, scenic and educational opportunities. The group welcomes anyone wishing to take advantage of these opportunities in this great national area. Plans for the year include guest speaker Sarah Posner, a field trip in October to visit the Antietam Battlefield and, of course, our December Chinese dinner and movie night. January will bring us to the Medical Museum in Silver Spring, and we plan to attend a show at Ford s Theater in March. Our final events of the year will be a trip to the Walter s Museum in April followed by the Baltimore Jewish Museum in May. The year-end get together will take place at Temple Shalom using the Hal Bruno patio. Of course it goes without saying that each trip will include a scheduled lunch at a nearby restaurant. The Renaissance calendar of events is posted on the Temple website and flyers for each will be in the weekly Temple bulletins. Anyone interested in additional information may contact Lynn Kanowith at lkanowith@verizon.net. Page 8

Sisterhood ARZA Sisterhood It s Back-to-School time and whether you have a child attending or not, it s the time of year we think of new beginnings. Temple Shalom Sisterhood is ready to get together with you, spend some time and plan ahead. We encourage you to attend the Temple- Wide Community Kick-Off on Sunday, Sept. 18, 9:00 AM -11:30 AM. There are programs for everyone and it s a great time for the whole community to get together. The giftshop@templeshalom will be open. We also co-sponsor the bagel nosh with the Brotherhood following the programs. The Sisterhood Dinner and Shabbat Service will be held on Friday, October 21, We encourage you to pay your Sisterhood membership dues early and attend the dinner at no charge. Guests may attend for $18. If you re interested in volunteering to organize this event or have any questions, please contact Mindy Schuster at schuster.mindy@gmail.com. Please look for an announcement about either a Sisterhood Yenta Eventa or Party on the Patio this Fall. We hold Sisterhood meetings on the 3rd Thursday of each month. We hope you can join us on Sept. 15, Oct. 20, Nov. 17, and Dec. 15. Room 11/12 will be open at 6:30 PM for socializing and the meeting will take place from 7:00-8:30 PM. Feel free to bring your dinner and we ll provide sweet treats. These are wonderful opportunities to get to know each other better, learn from speakers, participate in lively discussions and get involved. Whether you re better at initiating new ideas, can offer only time-limited involvement or just want to socialize, we invite you to mark your calendar and plan to attend our meetings. Stefanie Weldon, Holly Posin, Susan Cruz and I stepped up four years ago to reinvigorate and reinstate the giftshop@templeshalom. Our commitment was supposed to be for a year, but we loved what we did. It s fun, it s social and above all, it makes money and supports the Temple. Because of our other commitments, we are unable to volunteer on Sundays during school hours and some occasions during the week. We invite you to look at your schedule and consider volunteering. Please look at the Sisterhood newsletters for the link to Sign-up Genius. Separately, we are in need of someone who would like to be the point person/manager for the giftshop@templeshalom. It would involve being a buyer, working with artisans, marketing the store and merchandise, handling special orders, making deposits, summiting requests for payments, keeping track of inventory, checking on coverage for the store, and handling periodic returns and repairs. This job requires about 3-4 hours per week. The giftshop@templeshalom has meant too much over the years to have to host a goingout-of-business sale! Please look at your time and consider your availability to volunteer. Volunteering is a very rewarding experience. We look forward to seeing you soon. Yours, Beth Janoff President, Temple Shalom Sisterhood sisterhood@templeshalom.net Get in on the Fall Fun & Register for Temple Shalom Religious School The Religious School year will begin before you want summer to end! 15 Brotherhood Book Group Welcome back to another year at Temple Shalom! Peter Wolk, Brotherhood Co-President Men of Temple Shalom, please join the Brotherhood and come out to support our efforts to provide educational programs, building and grounds assistance, social events, and new friendships. We meet on the first non-holiday Wednesday of each month at 6:30 PM with an informal dinner. The theme of our monthly meetings this year is Brews and Bros. (Hey, why limit our good spirits to just Friday nights?) At our meetings, we plan events to hold for the Sunday School, develop educational programs for the Temple, and make decisions about how we can provide needed financial and volunteer support for the Temple. Each meeting also includes a member s presentation on a Jewish topic of interest, called Judaic Expressions. Last year, with your $36 dues support and other fundraising efforts and the volunteer efforts of many Brotherhood members, we were able to: Host picnic events for the first and last days of Sunday School; Help fund the Hal Bruno Memorial Patio, a new outside area for Temple events; Be a Sponsor of the Temple s annual fundraiser; Provide needed financial support to the Operating Fund; Present a Kiddush cup to each child who became a Bar or Bat Mitzvah; and, Sponsor brunch presentations about the Jewish image in film, political season analysis, a Historical and Current Review of the Primary and General Elections, and sponsor an engaging Jewish Spiritual Parenting program. This year, we are planning: To continue supporting the Sunday School and B nai Mitzvah programs; To continue helping to beautify the Temple grounds; To give Holocaust remembrance candles to the Sunday School students; To teach the older Sunday School students how to make latkes for Chanukah; To continue to sponsor our Brotherhood softball team; To hold educational programs featuring authors, performers, and leaders; To continue our efforts to support the students, families, and life of the Temple; and To have fun! The Temple needs the Brotherhood, and the Brotherhood needs members, leaders, and doers. Please join; the dues are $36 per year. I hope to see you at our events and meetings, and hope that you make new friendships as I have. Thank you. Peter Wolk, Brotherhood Co-President Temple Shalom Book Group Selections for October 16, 2016 The Betrayers by David Bezmozgis Winner of the National Jewish Book Award and a New York Times Editor s Choice. Loosely based upon the life of Soviet Jewish dissident Natan Sharansky, this novel follows the story of a Jewish scientist who is attacked by the Russian establishment after showing pro-israel sentiments. The focus of the story is the protagonist s declining relationships with his professional colleagues and friends after he becomes a target of the Russian state. December 4, 2016 The Hilltop by Assaf Gavron An Israeli best-seller. A humorous novel about a group of diverse Jewish settlers who establish an illegal settlement in the West Bank. In addition to describing the precarious existence of these pioneers, the unique twist in the story is its focus upon the difficult relationship between the settlers and the Israeli military, with the Palestinians acting as a rather benign presence. January 22, 2017 Paper Love: Searching for the Girl My Grandfather Left Behind by Sarah Wildman A journalist discovers a collection of letters between her deceased grandfather and the lover he left behind in Vienna before the Holocaust. Through the letters and her own exploration, she discovers the myths and realities behind the people who lived through the Holocaust and its impact upon the survivors. March 26, 2017 The Prime Ministers by Yehuda Avner A revealing memoir from a top-level insider in the Israeli government. The author shares up-close observations of all of Israel s leaders from David Ben-Gurion through Menachim Begin. He was in the room during Israel s wars and the peace negotiations with Egypt, when Yitzhak Rabin ordered the Entebbe rescue mission and Begin ordered the bombing of Iraq s nuclear reactors. May 7, 2017 An American Bride in Kabul by Phyllis Chesler This memoir, by an American feminist who marries a Westernized Muslim from a wealthy Afghan family, explores the dynamics of her relationship with her Afghan family over five decades. Told against the background of the changing conditions in Afghanistan (the author was once placed under house arrest, confined to the harem in her husband s estate) and her eventual escape from Afghanistan. 18 Meet Our B nai Mitzvah September October November 2016 Ella-Jane Miller September 3, 2016 Ella-Jane Miller was born in St. Louis, MO, and is currently a 7th grader at Earle B. Wood Middle School in Rockville. An important event in her life was her diagnosis of dyslexia in second grade, which is why she has chosen dyslexia advocacy as her mitzvah project. Another thing she finds very important is LGBTQ rights. Ella's obsessions include anime, Hamilton (the musical), music, and writing. She loves playing the violin and often tries to teach Ella Jane Miller herself to play other instruments (ukulele, guitar, piano). She enjoys participating in musical theater, ice skating, swimming, dancing, softball, lacrosse, being an otaku, and fan-girling/fan-boying with friends while watching anime or listening to Hamilton. Her favorite baseball team is the St. Louis Cardinals. Her dreams include seeing Hamilton live and becoming an author/director/film editor/teacher/psychologist. Alex Wolk September 3, 2016 Alex Wolk is an 8th grader at White Oak Middle School, where he enjoys engineering and participates in advanced band, the school play tech crew and softball. He's a member of the National Junior Honor Society and received the Superintendent Service Learning Award in 7th grade. He's active in Boy Scouts and is earning the rank of Star. He plays travel baseball and really enjoys any sport with a ball. He appreciates all the time and effort his tutors, Andy Mark and Alex Wolk Julie Knoll, have given him. Talia Nesin September 17, 2016 Talia Nesin, rumored to be a member of the Religious School s notorious Shalom Squad, is reportedly preparing for her most elaborate scheme yet, a Bat Mitzvah. Nesin s past schemes include talking incessantly during Hebrew School classes, getting food from the Parkway Deli but not enough for the whole class, and not doing homework during Homework Club. But this seemingly normal 8th Grader Talia Nesin at Takoma Park Middle School allegedly uses activities such as soccer, violin and debate club as cover to keep people off the scent of her plots. It is believed that accomplices Rachel Robinson and Anne Feinberg have been instrumental in helping to prepare Nesin for her Bat Mitzvah. Jason Lenett October 1, 2016 I am Jason Lenett.
