I politely demurred (tr.: If you can t find anybody else. ). Li7le did I know the default posi6on was congrega6onal president. At this point, it is standard fare for the incoming president to thank her predecessor and remark about what big shoes she has to fill. Rumor has it that our past president has li7le feet, so I ll limit my remarks to extending a very hearkelt thanks to Mark Rubenstein for the outstanding job he did as president. I also thank him for providing me with the following words of encouragement: If I can do this, anyone can. I am honored and privileged to serve as president of this remarkable congrega6on. (I am not humbled, however. See Meir, Golda.) I am thankful that the board is filled with talented, enthusias6c folks who are commi7ed to each other, the congrega6on and the broader community. Last week, for example, new social ac6on chair Kerry Ban led an overflow crowd of Dor Hadashers (and kin) chomping at the bit to put the congrega6on s commitment to social service into ac6on. I know we can expect great things with such a capable and commi7ed social ac6on chair and such a remarkable group of volunteers. In future president s messages, I will try to highlight some of the wonderful contribu6ons being made by each of our board members. These are challenging but exci6ng 6mes for the Pi7sburgh Jewish community and, in turn, for Dor Hadash. As we con6nue to explore our future loca6on over the coming weeks and perhaps months, there will be plenty of opportuni6es for every congregant to provide input. We strongly encourage that input. In closing, know that my presiden6al door is always open. My cell phone is charged and my is working. Contact me with ques6ons, concerns, comments and sugges6ons. I even welcome an occasional complaint or cri6cism. That will assure me you re paying a7en6on. I look forward to working with and serving all of you as we go from strength to strength. 2 REPORT ON OPEN MEETING ON SOCIAL ACTION CONGREGATION DOR HADASH by Carolyn (Kerry) Ban; As the new chair of the Social Ac6on Commi7ee, I am very happy to report on the open mee6ng to discuss the role of social ac6on in our congrega6on, held on April 23. There was a good turn-out, and I also heard from several others who had been unable to a7end but were interested in par6cipa6ng, so it is clear that there is much support within the congrega6on for a broader social ac6on agenda. Below is my summary of the discussion: 1. In introducing themselves, par6cipants shared their current ac6vi6es and groups with which they work on social ac6on issues, iden6fying many organiza6ons as poten6al partners. 2. We discussed the dis6nc6on between direct service and social ac6on (including educa6on and advocacy around issues) and the issue of geographic focus (local, na6onal, interna6onal). There was strong support for a local focus and, at least ini6ally, for a focus on direct service. 3. We then discussed the strategy of iden6fying a major theme that could unite our direct service work with the broader congrega6on, including the religious school, adult educa6on, and programming. Par6cipants had many great sugges6ons for themes. When we narrowed down the list and discussed what we could actually do, we agreed to focus on two topics: Criminal jus6ce, especially juvenile jus6ce Immigra6on and refugees We formed two teams, which will research what projects or organiza6ons are already working in this area and return to the full commi7ee with recommenda6ons on how best to proceed. As chair, I want to thank all the par6cipants for their posi6ve energy and crea6ve ideas. If you are interested in joining one of these teams or the commi7ee as a whole, please contact me. I look forward to working with all of you to make a difference in our community. 9 volunteers from Congrega6on Dor Hadash packed over 870lbs of food at the Squirrel Hill Food Pantry on March 5th. photo: Laurie Heller Tarr Send your thoughts, opinions, stories, reviews, ideas, classifieds, recommenda6ons, mazel tovs, ac6vi6es, events, announcements, farewells, gree6ngs, artwork, musings to kol@dorhadash.net NEXT DEADLINE THURSDAY June 22 2

4 R ELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS by Hal Grinberg, School Principal CHOCOLATE SEDER. On the Wednesday before Passover, the Religious School held its first Chocolate seder with the students. All the children from the congrega6on were invited. We went through the steps of the seder explaining each one and asking the students to suggest what would be the best chocolate subs6tute for each of the ritual foods. They ate bi7ersweet chocolate for the maror, chocolate eggs (easy to find at Easter 6me), strawberries which they dipped in chocolate for the karpas dipped in salt water, chocolate trail mix for the charoset, and of course, chocolate covered matzah and chocolate milk for the wine. The afikomen git was a Hershey bar. One of the purposes of ea6ng unusual food at the seder was to raise the curiosity of the children, so they would ask ques6ons and we could tell them the story of the Passover. The chocolate served that purpose well and at the seder we told the story of how the Jews let Egypt so they would be free to eat chocolate whenever they wanted! GRADUATION The students of the Vav/Mitzvah class will be gradua6ng at the Shabbat service on June 10th. The students in the class are: Roan Hollander, daughter of Teo and Sco7 Hollander; Rebecca Carter, daughter of Abby Horn & Chip Carter; Ethan Shorr, son of Tina London & Nick Shorr; Maia Hochheiser, daughter of Judy Yanowitz & Harry Hochheiser; Arthur Lang, son of Yoko Watanabe & Andrew Lang; Ethan Rosenberg, son of Michele Levine & Jim Rosenberg. The students will help lead much of the service, and read statements they are wri6ng about their religious school and Jewish experiences. Their 6melines of American Jewish history will be on display. LISA ROTHSTEIN. Each year, the Jewish Federa6on of Greater Pi7sburgh honors a Jewish teacher or volunteer from each school who has made a las6ng impact in Jewish educa6on. This year, Dor Hadash Religious School s nominee is Lisa Rothstein, who has been teaching 3 years for us. Lisa will be honored with the Unsung Jewish Hero award at a special event on Sunday, June 11, 2017 from 10:00-11:00 AM in Levinson Hall at the Squirrel Hill Jewish Community Center. Lisa is very passionate about Jewish educa6on, par6cularly about teaching the Holocaust, something she did in Connec6cut for 7 years. At Dor Hadash, she has taught both 5th & 6th grades, and she voluntarily plans some of the school-wide ac6vi6es. Together with the enthusiasm, generosity and ideas she has brought to our school, Lisa has created new ways to prepare her students to par6cipate in the adult Dor Hadash Torah study. For homework, she had them choose a law in Mishpa6m and prepare a defense or ques6ons about it. The students discussed these in class: so there was no shyness when they discussed with the synagogue "elders". It really made the students feel part of the congrega6on. One of her students said: Morah Lisa cares deeply about her students. We had fun in her class: she had us figure out which Hebrew names went to each Jellybean flavor so we could eat them. But I really liked how we had serious talks about our religion and the Holocaust, which led me to want to get more involved in the community and stand up for what is right. RECRUITMENT FOR NEXT YEAR. As always at this 6me of year, I ask all our congregants to help with recrui6ng new students for the religious school. Tell your friends/family/colleagues/neighbors who have children about our Religious School. We are a small school with small classes; our families prefer this size and we know there are others out there who also do. Encourage any family that shows interest to contact me, and I will tell them more: or hal.grin@verizon.net, and have them check out our website: h7p://dorhadash.net/ 4

5 The Struggle to Forgive by Deborah Prise, Adult Educa6on Chair On Sunday, March 19th, during a program co-sponsored by Congrega6on Dor Hadash and the University of Pi7sburgh s Jewish Studies Program, Dr. Dennis B. Klein, Kean University Professor of History and director of the Jewish Studies Program and the Master of Arts in Holocaust and Genocide Studies, delivered a lecture posi6ng the ques6on "Did Holocaust Survivors Forgive?" In a7endance were about 25 Dor Hadash congregants joined by some 20 members of the community, including Jewish Studies scholars Dr. Barbara Burs6n and Dr. Adam Shear. During Dr. Klein's Lecture, we learned that the perpetrators of the atroci6es were not only German soldiers, but oten, to the dismay of many Jews, some of the murderers were previously neighbors of Jews who interfaced with Jews as a part of everyday life prior to the Nazi invasions. In fact, in Yedwabne, Poland, 1200 Jews were murdered by former neighbors rather than Nazi mili6a. Throughout the program, Dr. Klein researched this ques6on by reading survivors ' memoirs. photos courtesy of Judy Grumet Clearly, he said, most survivors did not forgive; the crimes that were perpetrated against them were - indeed - unforgivable. However, in closer readings, he found expressions of a wish to be capable of seeing the humanness of the Nazis beyond the atroci6es that the person had commi7ed. Dr. Klein thinks this is a subtle form of forgiveness. Dr. Klein presented examples from the works of Simon Wiesenthal and Jean Amery. Among sugges6ons for further reading on the topic is The Sunflower: On the Possibili6es and Limits of Forgiveness by Simon Wiesenthal. The Annual Meeting in Pictures photos by Judy Grumet Dan Leger discusses the work of the Building Search Commi7ee he leads as the congrega6on contemplates the prospect of a move and Pi7sburgh s Jewish community explores new ways to collaborate. DH Units look on as board members give reports that reflect a congrega6on that is in many respects thriving, but experiencing a decline in membership that challenges us to engage prospec6ve members in more meaningful ways. Outgoing Treasurer Allen Baum looks on as congrega6onal outgoing President Mark Rubinstein contemplates what he s going to do with all of his 6me. 5

8 Chai Fund Barbara S. Wein Nathana Marunich A Word from the Past Rabbi Tarpon sat conversing son serious ma7ers with other learned men in a house in Ludd. The ques6on was raised: Which is more important - learning or ac6on? Rabbi Tarfoon replied, Ac6on is more important. Of what earthly use are fine words and preachment unless they are put into prac6ce? Rabbi Akiba upheld the contrary viewpoint. Learning is more important, he said. The sages finally concluded that both were right. Learning is more important when it leads to ac6on, they declared. -from A Treasury of Jewish Folklore No One Dies Alone is Expanding to UPMC Shadyside (NODA) NODA has provided hundreds of hours of human presence for those who would have otherwise died without the comfort of another person to accompany them during their final hours.
