1 קול דור חדש THE VOICE OF CONGREGATION DOR HADASH An Affiliate of the Jewish Reconstructionist Federation From the President Congregation Dor Hadash is a wonderful collection of dedicated members in a do-itourselves shared experience. The opportunity to be president has opened my eyes to the amount of time and enthusiasm so many individuals contribute to the well-being of our congregation. It is very impressive indeed! Allen Baum DH Volunteer of the Year! For his years of service to the congregation and to the broader Pittsburgh community Allen Baum was recognized recently as the Dor Hadash Volunteer of the Year. As we temporarily give the old Board members a brief rest, I share the congregation's appreciation for their efforts over the past years and offer a humble thank you for your efforts. As our new Board members begin their respective Chairs, I offer my hope that we can continue to work together to best serve our spiritual community. There it is...no mention of snowy days, Shabbat s, complete fiction or even cycling! Some thought it could not be done. -Mark Rubenstein Simcha Radar Saturday May 14, 2016 Dan Leger will be honored at the Shabbat Service followed by a luncheon hosted by Dor Hadash, Jewish Residen@al Services, and the Jewish Federa@on of Greater PiDsburgh. Services begin at 10:00 am. Saturday, May 21 Maddy Ruder will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah. Services begin at 9:30 am Allen Baum serving a meal at the East End Cooperative Ministry

2 Volume 58 Number 9 NISSAN/IYYAR/SIVAN 5776 May - June 2016 Religious School News On Sunday April 20th school families and congregants came together to make hamentashen for Purim. We had about 25 volunteers, adults and children. We had fun learning how to make that Purim pastry and eat a few too (quality control!). About 200 hamentashen were made, including a batch that was gluten-free. Thanks goes to all who participated, but especially to Judy Yanowitz and Harry and Maia Hochheiser, for leading the way on this activity, with the ingredients, equipment, and most importantly, the recipe. After having so much fun making such delicious hamentashen last month, we baked matzah on April 17th in the building s downstairs kitchen. By the time you receive this, the matzah and hamentashen will all have been baked and eaten. Now that all of the classes were brought together in the building, we have been able to do special programs during school on Wednesdays to mark upcoming holidays. The week before Purim parents joined us to make masks, play Purim mad-libs, and sing Purim songs. We have the Bat Mitzvah of one of our students coming up: Maddy Ruder will be called to the Torah on Shabbat morning, May 21st. I hope congregants will come to celebrate with Maddy and her parents, Jeff Ruder and Erin Pierce, and her brother Norman. Hamentashen fun at Dor Hadash. Photo credit: Hal Grinberg On May 27th, we will be praying in the great outdoors. It s Shabbat in the Park, starting at 6:15. A 30-minute Shabbat service followed by a potluck dinner, then relaxing together, with the kids and the able-bodied playing games. It has always been fun, especially when we get a good turn out from congregants as well as school families. This will be held at our usual location, the corner of Frick Park where Sanders and Richmond Streets meet in Regent Square. As always, invite family and friends; there s plenty of room in the outdoors. More details will follow via . Religious School Graduation will be held at the Shabbat morning service on on June 4th. We have four graduates: Hannah Thompson, Maddy Ruder, Simon Aizenstein, and Kai Spadafora. They will be leading much off the service and it would be great if lots of people came out to congratulate these students and their families. -Hal Grinberg, School Principal

6 Volume 58 Number 9 NISSAN/IYYAR/SIVAN 5776 May - June 2016 Social Action at Dor Hadash Social action and responsibility are important values in Judaism and at Congregation Dor Hadash. Our Social Action Committee and members in general organize events and opportunities to lend a hand in the Pittsburgh community. Periodically, for example, DH members pitch in at Global Links to help redirect still-useful materials away from US landfills in support of public health programs. The Squirrel Hill Food Pantry, which helps individuals in the neighborhood achieve as much self-sufficiency and independence as possible is another organization assisted by members of the congregation. Also each month a small rotating group of DH members prepares and serves a meal to those taking refuge in the East End Cooperative Ministry s emergency shelter. Dor Hadash members volunteering at the Sq. Hill Food Pantry. Photo credit: Laurie Heller Tarr These are just some of the ways the Dor Hadash community works to fulfill our commitment to strengthening our lives and the lives of our neighbors. If you d like to get involved in the Social Action Committee s volunteer work reach out to Social Action Committee Chair Geoff Clauss, socialaction@dorhadash.net or KOL editor Lou Fineberg kol@dorhadash.net and we ll do our best to connect you with others at DH who feel strongly about similar issues. We re significantly more effective when we volunteer and work together on matters that are important us. It s also a great way for us to build more meaningful relationships with fellow congregants and friends at DH.

8 Shabbat Morning Dor Hadash Each and every Saturday morning a group of congregants and guests (all are welcome) join to celebrate Shabbat. When simchas or special services are being celebrated the crowd is of course larger and the service structure and torah portion are carried out in a way you might expect when you attend synagogue. During the more ordinary Saturdays something extraordinary takes place at Dor Hadash. A modest group of 10 to 15 people (give or take) meets in the Rabbi s Study and sits in the round to participate in an intimate service that really helps shine a light on the incredible purpose and meaning of Shabbat. The atmosphere is informal and the service is of course voluntarily lead by one of the congregation s lay leaders, which includes an ordained Rabbi (or two). The service resonates of ruach. It s sometimes hard to believe there s only a dozen or so people participating. When it s time for the Torah portion instead of bringing out a physical Torah a conversation ensues about the weekly parsha, which is always riveting and insightful. Some come to listen, while others vigorously converse about potential meanings of the text and its relevance for today. Of course we re reading English translations, but plenty of Hebrew speakers are on hand when there s questions about ambiguous meanings of words. One of the beauties of the whole experience is being transported to a place that is essentially timeless, that has existed for millennia, a place where Jewish people have come together to honor Shabbat and think about and be reminded why it s among our most treasured gifts. The service, like a mezuzah hanging on a doorpost, invites us to step back from the workaday world to take note at the deeper and more sublime meanings and purpose of life.
