1 Temple Beth El Adar ~ Nisan 5772 March 2012 Chronicle Dear Friends, R A B B I S M E S S A G E Be joyful it s Adar! The Jewish month of Adar, with the Purim holiday is a time of joy and celebration, marked by costumes, singing, gift exchanges and giving charity. But what exactly do we celebrate? The Megillat Esther (the Book of Esther) tells the fictional story of the victory of Jews exiled in Persia over Haman, a royal official determined to annihilate them. Yet so important is the holiday of Purim that our rabbis teach us when the Messiah comes, all the other festivals will cease to be observed except for Purim. Perhaps this is because Purim represents a universal celebration of the underdog. As Jews we are all too familiar with being in the minority, strangers in a strange land. We have often been persecuted because we are different, as Haman tells King Ahasuerus in the Purim story: There is a certain people, scattered and dispersed among the other peoples in all the provinces of your realm, whose laws are different from those of any other people and it is not in Your Majesty s interest to tolerate them. (Esther 3.8) The story of Purim teaches us that the few can stand up against the many, that good can triumph over evil and that faith can inspire strength. Throughout our history, Jews have designated such victories as a Purim Katan a Small Purim where those communities who survived such discrimination rejoice in their deliverance. Purim is a holiday to be celebrated within a community because it is about the survival of a group. Besides, a party is always more fun when enjoyed with friends! And that is where Temple Beth El comes in. Please join us for a weekend of fun and merriment beginning Friday, March 9 th at 6 P.M. with a Purim Spaghetti Shabbat and culminating on Sunday, March 11 th here at TBE when we are joined by Carmel s Congregation Beth Israel in sponsoring a Purim Carnival. I look forward to seeing you there. B shalom, Rabbi Delbick
2 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE For this month s President s message, I ask that our members consider the relevance of maintaining Temple Beth El for you and your family and to maintain a Jewish presence in our community. The Temple Beth El Board of Directors truly appreciates the support we receive from our membership in keeping the Temple running and to be able to offer religious and educational programs. To do so, we need volunteers to serve on committees and our Board or simply to help with individual programs and activities. Your financial support is also key to maintaining a healthy Temple. If you have the time to volunteer, please get involved at whatever level you can. If you can make an extra contribution to the Temple, please consider how much your support means to us. And, on that note, our wonderful evening fundraising gala is just around the corner. The 4 th Annual Kosher Martini Gala is set for May 12 th. It s a fantastic event with music, dancing, dinner, raffle, wine heist, reverse draw and Martinis, Martinis, Martinis. Please spread the word, invite people encourage some of your non-jewish friends to buy tickets and attend. All proceeds benefit Temple Beth El. For Temple children and youth, this year TBE will host the Purim Carnival at TBE. Congregation Beth Israel from Carmel Valley will participate. We are also hosting a youth retreat the weekend of March 2 nd with youth from Congregation Emeth in Morgan Hill. Kayaking and other youth friendly activities are planned. Contact Jaime Hendriksz or Rabbi Delbick for details. And, summer is around the corner. If your kids want to attend Camp Newman this year, let us know. We are trying to encourage as many youth participants as possible. If you are interested, in any of these activities, please contact the TBE office at Finally, thanks to the efforts of one of our members that wishes to remain anonymous, I am happy to report that COSTCO is carrying Kosher items for the upcoming holidays. This includes kosher apple juice, matzo and hamentashen. Please try to support COSTCO s efforts to offer kosher foods in our Salinas store. Joel Panzer

5 FUNDRAISERS What a great success we had at the Kosher lunch! Thanks to Arthur & Leah Winter, Jeff Segal, Marianne Gennis, Nancy Mikita, and all our volunteers. Many of us were there for three days preparing salads, wrapping pickles, cutting and slicing cakes, and Thursday making sandwiches. Julie & Mike Dove helped organize so much and thank to our bake sale organizers, Francine & Don Johansen, Sylvia Seedman & Marge Gadsky. We had incredible help from the Salvation Army, St. Paul s Church and First Presbyterian Church. We ring the bell for the Salvation Army on 12/24 and help the churches with their fundraising dinners and they reciprocated in a big way. Please help us to help them in their fundraisers. It really made an incredible difference in making our event a success. And now on to our next big fundraiser-the Martini Gala which will occur on May 12, We will be honoring Arthur & Leah Winter for their incredible commitment to the Temple. We hope to have a big turnout for the Gala. It is great fund and features a silent auction, a wonderful dinner, a cognac bar, dancing, music & martinis galore! Do you have a vacation property-or a time share? These would be wonderful donations for the Auction and you get a tax deduction! If not, we can use gift baskets, travel gift certificates, gym memberships, jewelry services (haircuts, nails, massage, wine, cheese, restaurant certificates, vegetables, computer tech support, tickets, and jerseys.) We love this Temple and these fundraisers make it possible to balance our books. Please come and/or help!

16 56th ANNUAL KOSHER STYLE LUNCH The 56th Annual Kosher Style Lunch was again another huge success. Many thanks for the long hours many of you put in. It was hard work, but it was fun also. The early hours, long days and then knowing that we got it right made this event worthwhile and exciting. We made many new friends and created a lot of good will and public relations throughout the city. We'll do it all again next year! Your Sisterhood in action. DOROTHY S PLACE Sandwiches were delivered to Dorothy s Place, the Salinas Homeless Shelter, on February 8th, sandwich makers were Mae Smith & Karla Wolf. Our next delivery of sandwiches will be March 13th. If you would like to contribute call Temple Beth El or Karla Wolf. HELP US BRING CANTOR ROBIN BACK Cantor Edward Robin has confirmed he is available to come back to Temple Beth El for High Holidays services this year. The feedback from our congregation was overwhelmingly appreciative of Cantor Robin s participation and his outstanding contributions to our services. If we want Cantor Robin back, we need to raise funds. I am asking anyone who can contribute/donate to the High Holidays Cantor fund to do so as soon as you can. We need to make certain we have sufficient financial resources so Temple Beth El can commit to the Cantor and have him return this year. Thank you for your support of this worthy endeavor.
