4 Page 4 A word from our Rabbi... We are living in a time when social media makes it so easy to tweet or text words that in very little time may spread throughout the world and well beyond the individuals for whom we had intended. Words can bringing healing and comfort but they can also bring pain and hurt. Even when we were young, we knew that the saying sticks and stones was false. God creates the world through words and words have the power to build up or to tear down. In fact, our tradition teaches that the actual words you speak are what builds the world. When you use ugly words, ugliness exists. When you use gentle words, gentleness exists. When you use compassionate words, compassion exists and so on... This midrash (Viyikra Rabbi 33:1) illustrates this concept with a story of a rabbi who sent his worker off to buy him the best cut of meat in the market. The worker came back carrying a piece of tongue. A bit later, the rabbi sent the same worker off for a second time, this time to buy the worst cut of meat in the market. And this time the worker came back once again carrying a piece of tongue. The rabbi looked at him and questioned "What is this? I sent you off to buy the best cut of meat and you came with tongue and I sent you off to buy the worst cut of meat and you also came back with tongue." The worker looked at the rabbi and answered "but, aren't both true?" Temple Shalom 215 S. 5 Page 5 Isn't a tongue both the greatest thing in the world and also isn't it the worst? For as the Tanach, the Jewish Bible, teaches "death and life are in the power of the tongue" (Proverbs 18:21). The next time you speak take a moment to think about the words you use and remember "what words you speak impact the world." Please use your words for good and to build people up. There are enough challenges in this world which tear people down. Warmly, Rabbi Estelle Mills

8 Page 8 Religious School Update Judaic Learning update from September December. We have been busy! Here is what your students have been learning in religious school in the month of January: Our overall theme is Achrayut taking responsibility to make the world better by our actions. Kindergarten: They had their own Tu B Shevat seder and a puppet show (planting a forest in Israel) Third Grade: Creating a Shabbat meal, learning about Kosher/Non Kosher, making their own seder plates Fourth Grade: Learning Friday night evening prayers, scavenger hunt: looking for a mezuzah, class making their own wooden mezuzahs Fifth and Sixth: Favorite prayers, meaning behind the prayer Hebrew Through Movement: GREAT, FUN, EDUCATIONAL!!!! Art: The 6th and 7th grade have created beautiful Yads. It was a great project that brought all the students together to create a one of a kind masterpiece that truly will have meaning on each student's Bar/Bat Mitzvah when he/she reads form the torah pointing with his/her own yad. I look forward to seeing my daughter use hers on her special day. -Hope Bloom Seventh Grade: Respect for Animals in all areas The Religious School hosted a fantastic project where families came together to paint ceiling tiles to decorate the halls of the Religious School. It was amazing to see how each family could be so creative. It was one of the best events that we ever attended. I hope the Religious School hosts this event again. We look forward to many more events that the temple offers to bring families together! -Hope Bloom Exciting Happenings include: Tile project fundraiser huge success, come in and see how gorgeous they look Tu B Shevat Seder-Wednesday January 31, all grades led by Rabbi Serebro-Litvak Youth group activity 3rd-7th grade - Sunday, Feb. 11 Make Sundaes, play games and create personal care bags which will be delivered to a needing organization.
