4 Page 4 From the Rabbi As a rabbi, I put a lot of thought into my message every time I speak from the bima or address members of the congregation. Words are very powerful motivators and can also be informative and entertaining. My husband, Rabbi Steven L. Mills, began the 3rd Friday Speaker s Series two years ago at Temple Beth Am in order to have top scholars and activists in their fields address important issues of our time. I am very grateful to the anonymous donor couple from Temple Shalom who has stepped forward to bring this program to Temple Shalom this year, especially since it has now been named in loving memory of Steve. Due to their generosity and the generosity of three other couples from Temple Beth Am, the 3 rd Friday of every month from now through June will include a wonderful presentation on an interesting topic by an expert in that field. This year s speakers include five presenters who were either members of Steve s rabbinic school class or have worked closely with him. I invite you to put the dates of the speakers on your calendar and worship that evening in our combined Temple Shalom/Temple Beth Am worship experience that will also include the joint choir of both congregations. Our tradition also teaches that we learn in order to do. I know that this is a message that has been part of Temple Shalom s heritage as this congregation is known for its tradition of social action. This year s speakers will share with you their ideas for how we can improve our world and help others, however as our sage Hillel taught regarding changing the world: if not now, when? Our world has seen so many natural disasters in recent days from the hurricanes that struck Texas, St. Thomas, and Puerto Rico to the fires that still rage in California and Temple Shalom 215 S. 5 Page 5 outside our borders; the earthquake in Mexico among other recent disasters. Another one of Steve s classmates, Rabbi Amy Weiss of Houston is the founder and executive director of Undies for Everyone (UFE). A philanthropist with a calling to do good in the world, Amy started UFE in 2008 when, amidst countless holiday toy drives, a social worker expressed to her the need that disadvantaged youth had for underwear. As blogger for the Houston Chronicle at that time, Amy wrote a post calling for underwear donations, and due to the overwhelming response from readers, UFE was born. Today her organization is providing new underwear to the victims of Houston s hurricane. As Amy shared, people often donate used clothing, but underwear because it must be new, is difficult for the underprivileged or those who have lost their possessions to obtain. Please go to the link below to see how to donate to this cause of Steve s classmate and my colleague and friend who needs the donations now more than ever as so many in Houston were affected by the hurricane. I hope to see you at the 3 rd Friday speaker s series this year where you will meet some of his classmates and I hope that in Steve s memory you will consider donating to Undies for Everyone, a project of another of his classmates. Warmly, Rabbi Estelle Mills

6 Page 6 Religious school has gotten off to a terrific start! Our school is vibrant, and the children are excited about what they are learning. This month, the focus was on Teshuvah - forgiveness. and clearing our slate. RoshHashana, Yom Kippur, Sukkot and Simchat Torah truly help define the word "Hineni" - I am here, in mind, body and spirit. Just as Abraham answered God with Hineni, we are all learning to be present as a community. One way we are accomplishing this is through our year-long Tzedakah collection for victims of the recent natural disasters. Please help us by placing your coins in the white collection chamber which is in the Religious School entry. We will keep you posted on our success as we look to do our part of Tikkun Olam. Notes from the Religious School Committee: Our school year has started off with resounding success and we are planning on keeping that momentum going! October is full of Fall fun with TSA & Gesher starting on the 15th and Pumpkin Picking on the 22nd. If you haven"t already responded to the Pumpkin Picking trip, please do! We will be having lunch at Temple at 12:15, sponsored by the Brotherhood and then leaving for Ort Farm for a hayride and pumpkin picking. The Religious School Committee has some great activities planned for this year, so ask our members what's new at school and volunteer a helping hand as we kick off an exciting year!~ B'Shalom, Alissa
