SPEND AND RAISE Welcome Back! We hope that everyone enjoyed their summer. Rosh Hashana is just around the corner. Don t forget to order your gift cards today! We currently carry gift cards to Publix, Winn Dixie, Target and South Florida. All current purchases will be applied to your Spend and Raise gift card obligation. You can order gift cards online at The Spend and Raise Program was initiated last fall to help raise much needed funds for the Yeshiva. We have teamed up with the stores mentioned above and they donate to the Yeshiva a healthy percentage of revenue from purchases made with their gift cards. WELCOME We are pleased to share the news that a dynamic, Innovative educator is joining the ECE Administration in the position of Assistant Director. Mrs. Talia Levine has many years experience teaching at the Early Childhood and Elementary School level. She has a Master s Degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. She will be working closely with Mrs. Bloom who will be mentoring her in her new position. We wish her much success. CALENDAR NOTES Labor Day Monday, September 2. NO SCHOOL Rosh Hashana Wednesday, September 4 Friday, September 6. NO SCHOOL NUT FREE SCHOOL To protect the health of our allergic children, no nuts or nut products will be allowed in the Early Childhood Program. Also, please check that all foods contain NO TRACES OF NUTS. All lunches, snacks and Shabbos treats must be nut free. If you send cupcakes or birthday cakes to school, please check with the bakery to make sure that they are nut free. Thank you for your help in ensuring a safe environment for all of our children. SNACKS The school provides a morning snack for the children. Parents should send in a snack for the afternoon. An additional snack should be sent in the lunchbox for children who are in aftercare. 2 Our Hot Lunch Program began last week. Please remember to post your menus in a prominent place at home and mark the days you ordered lunch for your children. A calendar was included with your order forms for this purpose. Please note: It is not possible to rely on the school to provide lunch for your child(ren) on the days that you did not order from the Hot Lunch Program but forgot to send lunch from home. We cannot sell lunches on the spot. All orders are placed with the caterer in advance of at least one week- and we do not order extra meals. Please remember that Mondays and Wednesdays are meat days, so children who bring their own lunch may bring meat lunches on those days. Remember to send pareve snacks on those days as well. Train your children not to share snacks in school. WHAT S YOUR NUMBER? It is vital that the pre-school be current on all telephone numbers at home and at work. Also, please inform us if your cell phone number has changed. THE VOICE OF THE SHOFAR Thank you to Rabbi Baumann for blowing shofar for all the preschool children. CARPOOL TIDBITS The first four spots of the carpool line are designated for ECE drop-off. The teacher will take your children from the car to their classroom. Pre-school children must be escorted to their classes by a sibling, a parent or a teacher. Children are not permitted to walk unaccompanied along the carpool walkway. Please be advised that on Monday through Thursday school ends at 2:45 p.m. and outdoor carpool procedures conclude at 3:10 p.m. On Fridays, dismissal is at 1:45 p.m. and carpool ends at 2:10 p.m. After 3:15 p.m. on Monday-Thursday and 2:10 p.m. on Friday, all staff who supervise outdoor carpool return to the school building. We ask that you please make every effort to pick up your children before those times. The carpool lane is only for moving vehicles. Please do not stop in the carpool area and leave your car unattended after 2:30 p.m. If there are any carpool changes (i.e-if your child is being picked up by you rather than going with the planned carpool or if a child is going to a friend s house with a different carpool) please call the school office as well as the carpool driver to inform them of the change. Try to make these arrangements as early as possible to avoid last minute confusion. If you wish to pick up your children before the regular dismissal time, please go to the school office for a release form. Newsletter 2

4 Erev Shabbos Parashas Netzavim-Vayeilech 5773 Dear Parents, The first few weeks of the school year stimulate discussions of our children s hopes and dreams for the year. Some say they want to learn how to be better at making friends, some dream of improving their basketball skills and some want to improve in reading Rashi. The excitement and nervousness of entering a new situation, dealing with new personalities, and anticipating more challenging learning tasks are part of the experience that heralds a year ahead of growth, maturation and development in character as well as academics. The same should hold true for the parents. As adults, we may have stopped growing physically, but we can never stop growing spiritually, emotionally or intellectually. Our children will respect us and learn so much more from us when they see us learning and trying to improve. Just as telling children do as I say, not as I do, is hypocritical and ultimately counterproductive to their development as a mentsch, so too is coercing a child to attend school, to be a diligent student and to complete homework while the parent is lax about learning, about attending shiurim, and about working on self-improvement. If you want your kid to grow, you must be growing yourself. School may be only for kids, but learning is for everyone. We, as parents, need to commit now, at the start of the school year and less than a week before Rosh Hashana, to rededicate ourselves to Torah learning, to setting solid goals for the entire year. Just as your children s teachers have a curriculum to guide them through the year, we adults need to consider at the outset what are our learning goals for the week, for the month and for the year. Families that celebrate learning at any level, and respect Torah and secular knowledge have a better opportunity to produce children who are successful in school not because they re smarter or have more facts in their head, but because their children are enabled to be excited about learning and to love the process of learning new things. Attitude is a small thing that s very important. And the children s attitude begins with what they see and experience at home. Best wishes to all of us for a successful journey in the year ahead. 5 Honey Cupcakes 2 ½ cups flour ¾ cup honey 1 tsp. baking powder 1 cup sugar 1 tsp. baking soda ½ cup oil 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 cup strong coffee, cooled 2 eggs Turn oven on to 325 degrees. Grease muffin pan. Place muffin cups in pan. Put the flour, baking powder, baking soda and cinnamon in a medium sized mixing bowl. Mix well with spoon, counting 35 to 40 strokes. This will keep the batter from having holes or lumps. Set aside. Beat eggs in a large bowl until foamy. Slowly add the honey, sugar and oil to the eggs while continuing to mix. Add half the coffee and half the flour mixture. Mix until smooth. Add the rest of the coffee and the flour mixture. Pour into the muffin pan. Bake 25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out dry when you poke it into the center of the cupcake. Newsletter 5
