2 FROM THE RABBI S DESK What Do Married Couples Fight About Most? A Sukkas Lesson for the Whole Year blanket. According to researchers in England, the average couple fights in their bedroom 167 times a year. What do they fight about? The survey concluded they fight about leaving a light on to read, the temperature in the room, allowing the children to sleep in the bed, and snoring. More than anything else, however, they found that the one issue couples fight about in their bedroom most is hogging the The Shulchan Aruch (634:1) says that the minimum size of a kosher Sukkah is 7 tefachim by 7 tefachim, or approximately 2.5 ft by 2.5 ft. For perspective, that is less than half the size of my desk. Indeed, the Mishnah Berurah says as long as the Sukkah can hold your head, most of your body, and part of your table, it is kosher. Rav Yankele Galinsky notes that Pesach and Sukkos have many similarities and parallels, yet there is one glaring difference. On Pesach we spread out, recline, and dine like royalty. In contrast, on Sukkos, we squeeze and squish into our fragile, flimsy, temporary small huts. Once we are all inside, pressed up against one another, when there is no room left, we first begin to recite the ushpizin and invite guests to come join us. Not only do we welcome Avraham, Yitzchak, etc. but v imach kol ushpizei ila ei, come one, come all, plenty of room for everyone. Where? Israeli war hero and statesman Moshe Dayan was once stopped for speeding by a military policeman. Dayan argued: I only have one eye. What do you want me to watch the speedometer or the road? The quality of so much of our life experience is contingent on which eye we use to see. It is not so contingent on what we see, but rather how we see. The Mishnah in Avos (5:22) encourages us to be the students of Avraham Avinu and not Bilam. Avraham is characterized by having an ayin tova, a generous eye, while Bilam lived with an ayin ra ah, a stingy, critical eye. Living with a good eye, a kind, optimistic, positive and magnanimous view is not mutually exclusive from having an ayin ra ah, a negative, stingy, judgmental, pessimistic and intolerant view. In truth, all of us have both, and employ different pairs of eyes depending on the moment, the circumstances, and our mood. In marriage, in parenting, in friendships and in life, there are times we are in a place with someone in which they can do no wrong. We feel particularly close to them for whatever reason at that moment and so when they do things that would otherwise bother us, we don t notice, we give them the benefit of the doubt, we laugh away their idiosyncrasy, we excuse their behavior, and we see them only with our ayin tova, our generous eye. Psychologists have studied this natural behavior and even coined their own term: The Halo Effect. Other times, however, when we feel alienated or disaffected from someone, we see them exclusively through our ayin ra ah, our critical eye and they can do absolutely no right. It is as if they are already on our bad side before they even woke up in the morning. The smallest slight, otherwise normal behavior on their part, grates at us, irritates us, and drives us crazy. What determines if we are looking at our husband or wife, our son or daughter, our friend, neighbor or co-worker with an ayin tova or an ayin ra ah? Certainly their behavior and choices influence how we see them, but all else being equal, in circumstances when they are behaving the same way but we are in a different place, the only thing that determines our perspective and viewpoint and by extension our relationships and happiness is us. The Talmud (Sanhedrin 7a) says when a couple s love is strong they can sleep on the edge of a sword with room left over. When their love is weak, a bed that is sixty amos (90 feet wide) will feel cramped and out of room. The bed is an objective size; the blanket has fixed dimensions. What determines if it feels cramped or spacious only our perspective and our view. Rav Galinsky explains that Sukkos is the holiday of unity. We have spent the High Holidays bonding, reconciling, repairing our relationships and striving to form a bond. We feel a closeness and a love and therefore we see with an ayin tova giving others the benefit of the doubt, being tolerant of our differences, choosing to dismiss slights and hurts and seeing the good in the person. Rav Galinsky notes that on Pesach we have four sons, four cups, and on Sukkos we have four species, but there is a big difference. Each of the four sons has his own independent question and we give each an individual answer. The four cups are invalid if consumed in combination. The Talmud (Pesachim 105b) says you must drink them one at a time. In contrast, the four species of Sukkos must be taken b agudah achas, bundled together, taken as one unit in order to be kosher. Our sukkos are objectively small, close quarters. Will we feel cramped, crowded, and confined? Will we be going crazy, needing our space, craving a break? Or will our Sukkah feel roomy, spacious, and with plenty of room for others to join? Will we look forward to the next meal and more conversation? Page 2

3 The answer is not found in the dimensions of our Sukkah, or in the quality of the food, or even in the behavior of our guests. It is found in ourselves. If we put on our ayin tova, our generous eye, there will be all the room in the world. If we are seeing through our ayin ra ah, our critical view, there isn t a Sukkah big enough in the world for us to be comfortable. The Mishnah in Avos 5:5 lists ten miracles that occurred in the Beis HaMikdash. One of them is that people stood crowded yet bowed down spaciously and nobody said that it was cramped. The Chassam Sofer (y.d. 2:234) explains: Har HaBayis, the Temple Mount, was objectively crowded. The miracle was that nobody felt confined or restricted because of the joy and love they felt at that moment. Howard Schultz, the Chairman and Chief Global Strategist for Starbucks, visited Israel in 2011 and wrote an article upon his return. He related an encounter that he and a number of high-powered executives had when they met with Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel, zt l, the former Rosh Yeshiva of the Mir: Gentlemen, the elderly rabbi began, who can tell me the lesson of the Holocaust? The Rabbi called on one of the men who was surprised to be singled out and he began meekly, We will never, ever forget The Rabbi indicated this was not the right answer No one wanted to be called on next. Schultz avoided eye contact with the teacher so he wouldn t be recognized. Another man spoke up saying We should never be a victim or a bystander. The elderly Rabbi dismissed this answer as well. At this point, Schultz said the entire group felt reduced to a group of elementary school students. Then the Rabbi responded in gentle but firm voice, Let me tell you the essence of the human spirit. As you know, during the Holocaust, people were transported in the worst possible inhumane way, by cattle cars, convinced they were going to prisoner of war camps but ultimately they ending up in death camps. After hours and hours in the stifling crowded cattle car with no light, no bathroom, nowhere to sit, they arrived in the camps freezing cold and hungry. The doors of the rail cars were swung wide open and the people inside were blinded by the light. Men and women were separated, mothers were torn from their daughters and fathers from their sons, and they were herded off to bunks to sleep. Only 1 person out of 6 was given a blanket. And at that moment, that person, who was fortunate enough to be handed that blanket, had a choice: am I going to push the blanket to the other five people who didn t get one or am I going to pull it toward myself to stay warm? Am I going to give or am I going to take? It was during this defining moment that we learn the power of the human spirit, when people pushed the blanket to five others. With that, the Rabbi stood up and said take your blanket, take it home and push it to five other people. This Sukkos, let s see our Sukkah, our blanket and our love as big enough to share with other people. As Boca Raton Synagogue is an environment where all of its members and visitors need to feel valued and welcomed, members are required to comport themselves in a manner which reflects mutual respect and a sense of inclusiveness. In our Synagogue, we value debate about pressing issues. This is consistent with the American democratic tradition. Our sages saw the value of arguments conducted L Shem Shamayim, for the sake of heaven, believing that great minds who engage in respectful debate will arrive at better solutions. They valued and welcomed alternate views, as do we. Derech Eretz, good and proper conduct, and mutually respectful dialogue are core values of the Synagogue community. These create a safe place for inspiration and spiritual growth, the central purpose of the Synagogue. It is a violation of Jewish law and ethics to use harsh language (vitriol) to demonize or to marginalize people with whom one may disagree. Uncivil expression reflects negatively on our Synagogue as well as on the individuals who engage in such behavior. Boca Raton Synagogue expects its members to act and to speak with kindness and sensitivity to others. It is only in this fashion that a strong, vibrant, and harmonious community can be created and maintained. Adherence to this policy is a requirement for membership in good standing at the Boca Raton Synagogue. In line with our recently published Derech Eretz Statement, we mention some examples of how we can be more sensitive toward others and create an even better community. Men should not enter the Women s Sections during the Services Please do NOT walk towards to exit during Kaddish... Even if you don't walk out, it is insulting. 6 SUKKOT LAWS SIMCHAT TORAH GUIDELINES In order to create the appropriate atmosphere in the Shul, and to protect our children on Simchat Torah, we ask for full cooperation from adults: 1. Zero tolerance for alcohol on the Hahn Judaic Campus on Simchat Torah night 2. Alcohol is restricted on Simchat Torah Day to the Social Hall and to the Hashkoma Minyan Aliyot rooms which will be under supervision. ARBA MINIM (The Four Species) GENERAL LAWS There is a Mitzvah to hold the following four species: an Etrog, a Lulav, three Hadasim (myrtle branches), and two Aravot (willow branches). The exact identity of the species is known to us on the basis of unbroken oral tradition. The Arba Minim are taken all seven days of Sukkot except on Shabbat. The Mitzvah of the four species must be performed during the daytime. Children who are trained to observe the Mitzvah of the four species must use a set which satisfies all the conditions which would be proper for an adult to use. This year, on the first day of Sukkot, the following blessings are made: 1st. 2nd. On. On subsequent days only the first blessing is made. One should stand when reciting the blessing and taking the four species. Since the blessing must immediately precede the performance of the Mitzvah, Ashkenazim pick up the four species with the Etrog upside down, make the blessing, and then turn the Etrog upright. Sephardim leave the Lulav and Etrog on the table, recite the blessing and then pick them all up. One takes the Etrog in his left hand and the other three species in his right hand. According to Ashkenazic custom, a left handed person holds his Lulav in his left hand. However, the setting of the haddasim and Aravot is the same as everyone else. The Sephardic custom is that even a lefty holds the Lulav in the right hand. The Shidra - central spine of the Lulav should face towards the person. The Lulav, Hadasim and Aravot are bound together with Lulav leaves. The Hadasim should be on the person s right and the Aravot on his left, and the Hadasim should be higher than the Aravot. Many Sephardim use an alternate method of placing a hadas on the Shidra and alternating an Arava and hadas on both sides. After taking the four species, Ashkenazim point them three times in each direction in the following order: East, South, West, North, up and down. Most Sephardim and chasidim wave them in the following order: South, North, East, Up, Down, West. It is proper for there to be no separation between one s hands and the four species. Thus, if one puts on tefilin during chol hamoed, he should remove them before taking the four species. Some have the custom to take the four species and recite the blessing in the Sukkah. One may not eat before one takes the four species. REQUIREMENTS FOR EACH OF THE FOUR SPECIES Etrog An Etrog is unfit if it is smaller than a walnut, dried up, or punctured. Some Etrogim naturally grow with a Pitum (a protuberance at the opposite end from the point of detachment from the tree); some do not. If an Etrog naturally grows with the Pitum, then it is unfit for use if the Pitum has become completely detached. Lulav A Lulav is unfit if its tip is broken off, or dried up, or if its Shidra (central spine) is split the majority of its length. Hadasim The Hadasim must be at least nine inches long. The leaves of the Hadasim must completely cover the stems; and for at least the majority of this length (starting from the tip, but not necessarily in succession), the leaves of the Hadasim must grow in clusters of three from the same point on the stem. The tips of the Hadasim must not be broken off or completely dried up. Most of the leaves must not be so dried up that they are white and split at the touch of the fingernail. Aravot The Aravot must be a species of which the stems will eventually turn red upon maturity. The edges of the leaves of Aravot must be either smooth or obtusely serrated, not acutely serrated; not acutely serrated. The minimum length of the Aravot is nine inches. If the tips of the Aravot are broken off or dried up, or if most of the leaves are so dried up that they split at the touch of a fingernail, the Aravot are unfit for use. TREATMENT OF THE FOUR SPECIES The most successful method to preserve the Hadasim-Avrot, is to provide a large plastic bag or sheet in which to place the entire Hadasim-Avaros unit. A water saturated sponge or cloth toweling is placed in this bag to provide a moist atmosphere. Upon returning from the Synagogue, the entire unit is slipped off the Lulav, put in the plastic bag and placed in the refrigerator. Care must be taken not to tear off the leaves. Page 6

8 ISRAEL UPDATE SOCIAL ACTION More bad news for supporters of BDS-- The Bank of Ireland, the country s oldest financial institution, closed the accounts of the pro- Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions organization s Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) in late September. The SPC branch in Ireland is a hardcore BDS group targeting the Jewish state. According to the Jerusalem Post, the closure of the SPC account appears to be part of a larger trend within the European banking system to sever ties with pro-bds groups. It follows similar decisions in other European countries including Austria, Germany, France and the UK, where banks have closed down accounts of Palestinian campaign groups. Ireland is considered one of the strongholds of BDS activity in Western Europe. The termination of the SPC could result in growing financial actions to end relationships with pro-bds groups. The Post reported first on the closures of bank accounts in France, Germany and Austria in Commerzbank, Germany s second largest bank, shut a BDS account in June. The Austrian bank Bawag shut down the account of the Austria-Arab Culture Center, which had hosted convicted Palestinian terrorist Leila Khaled, who participated in the 1969 hijacking of a TWA jet. A year later, she helped hijack EL AL flight 219. Part of remembering these historical events is recognizing and appreciating Hashem s role in history. We look at historical events through a lens that sees everything as part of His larger plan. Why though does the passuk repeat itself? How does remembering the days of old differ from considering the years of each generation? The Menahem Tziyyon offers a homiletical interpretation noting that the word, years שנות can also be interpreted at. changes שנות The Torah is teaching us to examine the changes between the generations. We must understand that the lessons of the past must be applied, but only in a discerning fashion. That which worked in the past may no longer work today. Circumstances are different, people are different, and times are different. This lesson is particularly apt coming on the heels of Yom ha- Kippurim. Our souls are cleansed and we are ready to start the new year recharged with a fresh outlook moving forward. As we are looking toward a year of spiritual growth, we must consider our context that which we thought worked last year, may need revisiting and new methods and sources of inspiration may need to be found for the upcoming year. One of the lessons of Yom ha-kippurim is that complacency is not acceptable. We must strive to continually grow. Doing so requires thinking about changes that we can make to best insure our success. SAVE THE DATE!!!!!!!!! Session 1 is Coming Soon!! Prayer Steps to a New You! 7:00pm - 8:00pm There are four primary misconceptions that prevent us from effectively communicating with our Creator through prayer. It feels like we are talking to a wall. Since we don t actually see God or sense Him with any of our five senses, how can we have a conversation with Him? A one-way dialogue is awkward at best; at worst a little crazy. It makes no sense to pray to God if He knows our needs. He ll either give us what we want if we need it, or He won t if we don t. How can prayer change His mind? God doesn t seem to answer our prayers. Sometimes we pray for an ill person and he dies anyway. Or we pray for years to find a soul-mate or to have children and our requests go unanswered. So why keep trying? Standardized prayer is a drag. How can you have a natural conversation with someone if you don t get to decide what to say and when to say it? That s not called communication. This series will explore each of these questions and see how a small change in perspective can make all the difference. November 3, Introduction to Prayer This class will serve an introduction to the subject of Jewish prayer. What is Prayer? Where did prayer come from? What are some of the basic skills? We will open the siddur and demonstrate how prayer can help us unlock the secret to becoming the individuals that we know we are meant to be. November 10, The Morning Blessings Stretch What s with Judaism and all these blessings? Does G-d really need my blessing? Who is blessing who? This class will demonstrate how every blessing is not only about G-d, but has more to do with each of us that we ever could have imagined. November 17, Warming up with Kriat Shema The Shema is a declaration of faith, a pledge of allegiance to One God. It is said upon arising in the morning and upon going to sleep at night. It is said when praising God and when beseeching Him. It is the first prayer that a Jewish child is taught to say. It is the last words a Jew says prior to death. What makes this prayer so special? December 8, Stand Up and Get Moving We ve been preparing and working really hard to get to this point of the prayer service. Now that we have spent time stretching and warming up its time to have a personal conversation with G-d. But what do I say? What if I have a personal request, where can I insert it? How can I make the most out of this special moment. December 15, Cool Down and Make it a Great Day Just when you think that it s over, there is one more critical aspect to the service. Unfortunately it s one of the most neglected pieces and a reason why many people don t get any substantial results. Join us as we conclude the series and solidify all of the lessons we learned to ensure that you can become a new you. Rabbi Josh Broide (561) RJB@BRSonline.org Page 12
