As Boca Raton Synagogue is an environment where all of its members and visitors need to feel valued and welcomed, members are required to comport themselves in a manner which reflects mutual respect and a sense of inclusiveness. Derech Eretz, good and proper conduct, and mutually respectful dialogue are core values of the Synagogue community. These create a safe place for inspiration and spiritual growth, the central purpose of the Synagogue. It is a violation of Jewish law and ethics to use harsh language (vitriol) to demonize or to marginalize people with whom one may disagree. Uncivil expression reflects negatively on our Synagogue as well as on the individuals who engage in such behavior. In our Synagogue, we value debate about pressing issues. This is consistent with the American democratic tradition. Our sages saw the value of arguments conducted L Shem Shamayim, for the sake of heaven, believing that great minds who engage in respectful debate will arrive at better solutions. They valued and welcomed alternate views, as do we. Boca Raton Synagogue expects its members to act and to speak with kindness and sensitivity to others. It is only in this fashion that a strong, vibrant, and harmonious community can be created and maintained. Adherence to this policy is a requirement for membership in good standing at the Boca Raton Synagogue. In line with our Derech Eretz Statement, we mention some examples of how we can be more sensitive toward others and create an even better community. It is a poor message and a lack of courtesy to read while the Rabbi or a guest is speaking. Please do not ever exit the parking lot through the entrance. BRS CEMETERY PLOTS IN ISRAEL Boca Raton Synagogue has purchased an exclusive section at Eretz HaChaim cemetery in Israel for our members. Eretz HaChaim is located in the hills of Bet Shemesh, just 20 minutes from the airport, off the Jerusalem highway. The cost to purchase a plot is $9,000 for members, $10,500 for a family member of a member, and $12,500 for non-members. This includes the cemetery's one-time required maintenance fee of $1,500. Funeral and burial services in Israel are currently priced at $1,850, and this option can be pre-purchased in order to guarantee this price. In order to purchase a plot, a $1,000 deposit is required per plot, and the remaining balance can be paid over a maximum of 24 months. 6 ISRAEL UPDATE SOCIAL ACTION The U.N. has stopped supporting a Palestinian community center in the West Bank that was named for a woman who participated in a deadly 1978 attack in Israel. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres's office said that the U.N. withdrew its support after learning the center was named for Dalal Mughrabi. Mughrabi, a member of the Fatah faction of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), participated in a 1978 bus hijacking on Israel's main coastal highway in which 38 civilians were killed. "The glorification of terrorism, or the perpetrators of heinous terrorist acts, is unacceptable under any circumstance," Guterres's office said. "The U.N. has repeatedly called for an end to incitement to violence and hatred as they present one of the obstacles to peace." The U.N. announcement, which entailed the removal of a sign from the site, came a day after Norway pulled its funding. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Norway and the U.N. for their actions. The Norwegian Foreign Ministry demanded the Palestinian Authority reimburse funds given to the women's center, saying Oslo "will not allow itself to be associated with institutions that take the names of terrorists." The simple reading of the pesukim and the opinion of most Rishonim is that there is a mitzvah on each and every Kohen to recite the birkat kohanim (in the context of the hazarat ha-shatz of Shemoneh Esreh specifically in the context of a minyan) once a day, each and every day. This is fact is the Sephardic practice to recite birkat kohanim each morning during shaharit. Interestingly, the Ritva seems to indicate that either in addition to or instead of the mitzvah on the Kohanim, there is a mitzvah on each person to be blessed by the Kohanim each and every day. It is either a mitzvah on the Kohanim to bless or a mitzvah on Bnei Yisrael to be blessed. Regardless of one s approach, the mitzvah is to hear the blessing from the Kohanim. We have the practice that the hazzan recites each word and the Kohanim repeat the word after the hazzan. While both recite the same pesukim, it is only through the Kohanim s recitation that the mitzvah is fulfilled. There is a prevalent minhag that the tzibbur recite certain pesukim during the birkat kohanim. Since listening to the Kohanim is part of the mitzvah, it is inappropriate to recite them (or engage in any other activity or speak) at that time. Instead, the pesukim should be recited while the hazzan recites the words, as his recitation is not part of the mitzvah, but just a way to guide the Kohanim to not get confused. Rabbi David Shabtai, MD Rabbi, Sephardic Minyan rds@brsonline.org Parshah Thought Rashi, quoting Hazal, explains the connection between the Torah s description of a Sotah (unfaithful wife) immediately followed by its rules for one who wants to become a Nazir. Since alcohol can often be a cause / pretext for infidelity, one who sees the procedure that is done to a Sotah may choose to distance himself from wine [one of the Nazirite prohibitions is against drinking wine and eating grapes]. It is for this reason that the Torah not only juxtaposed the two rules, but placed the parshah of Sotah before the parshah of Nazir. However, in the Mishnah and Gemara, Masekhet Nazir appears before Masekhet Sotah. In light of Hazal s comments regarding the ordering of the parshiyot, the question begs itself, why would Hazal specifically switch the order in the Mishnah. The Pri Tzaddik explains that the Torah is full of hints. Some things are obvious and some things are more subtle. The Torah wants us to recognize that all that which we encounter in life can be viewed and understood as a message from Hashem. So when a person happens to be in the Beit ha- Mikdash and sees the Sotah procedure, he is to take the message to heart and recognize that perhaps Hashem is sending him a message to be more careful about his habits. However, when it comes to the תורה שבעל פה (the oral Torah, represented by the Mishnah), the goal is somewhat different. תורה שבעל פה is different in that we who engage in its study become part of it - the very act of learning it puts each and every person as a link in its transmission from Sinai. We become part of it. As part of who we are, Hazal are trying to train us to plan and look ahead. We need to recognize what situations may arise and preemptively and proactively take steps to plan for them. The fact that the parshah of Sotah is a possibility, should inspire us to find ways to fend against getting caught up in such problems. Page 7
