GRADUATIONS The end of the school year signals many graduations; all of them auspicious, all of them heartwarming. The mere photo of a smiling child in a sailor suit, graduating preschool, ready to embark on her journey through h elementary, evokes personal recollections of memorable school days. Radiant, unpretentious young ladies dressed in cap and gown, who have learned so much are eager to put their learning and the good midos they developed into practice. Talmidim, taught the basis of how to learn, are fervent in their desire to advance in their studies. Parents recall their own academic struggles and triumphs and are keenly aware of how special it is to raise children imbued with Torah and midds tovos. After an inspiring endof-the-yeato New York, eighth grade talmidim enjoyed a special program at the Torah trip home of Mr. and Mrs. Amir Jaffa. At the Yeshiva High School graduation, Executive Board Member Dr. Howard Goldman greeted participants. Rabbi Shlomo Eisenberger, Rosh Yeshiva, Telshe Yeshiva, spoke on behalf of the Vaad Hachinuch, and Rabbi Zev Busel, Rosh Kollel, delivered a message to the graduates. Rabbi N.T. Baron and Rabbi Tzvi Maimon, mashgiach awarded Judaic Studies diplomas while Rabbi Yitzchak Kasnett, Principal, and Mr. Gary Ziegler, Assistant Principal presented General Studies diplomas. Executive Board Member Mr. Alan Schabes served as chairman of the the Yavne graduation. Rabbi Naphtali Burnstein brought greetings from the Vaad Hachinuch, and Rabbi Simcha Dessler addressed the audience via video and bestowed the prestigious Beatrice Stone Midos Award to Bracha Klahr and Sarah Zuckerman. Limudei Kodesh Valedictorian Bracha Klahr, General Studies Valedictorian Rochel Leah Victor, and Salutatorian Sarah Zuckerman addressed the audience. Mrs. Neche Moerman, Principal, addressed the girls and presented Limudei Kodesh diplomas. Mrs. Lois Mager, Assistant Principal, and Hebrew Academy Past President ent Mr. Mel Waxman presented General Studies diplomas. We are proud of all our graduates, and especially thrilled for our wonderful SEGULA graduate, Neenah Friedman. Neenah diligently, always with charm and grace, navigated the road to graduation, and endeared herself to teachers and classmates alike. SEGULA faculty rejoiced with the school at a beautiful luncheon for the seniors. Neenah taught the class the meaning of diligence, devotion, friendship, maturity, and being joyful. We wish her and all the graduates the best of luck as they continue their journey through life. 2
THE HEBREW ACADEMY KOLLEL Now beginning its fourth year as a dynamic division of the Academy, the school-based Hebrew Academy Kollel continues to uplift the community and inspire our students. Recently, the Kollel was privileged to hear lectures, and divrei chizuk, word of encouragement, from Rabbi Malkiel Kotler, shlita, and Rabbi Dovid Shustal, shlita, Roshei Yeshiva of Beis Medrash Govoha of Lakewood, New Jersey. Kollel members conduct their learning in the Yeshiva High School Beis Medrash, invigorate the environment there, and provide wonderful and accessible role models to the high school talmidim. We are heartened by how students have taken to the Kollel and formed strong bonds with its members. The impact has created a strong love of Torah and easy access to experts always willing to listen and guide. YESHIVA HIGH SCHOOL Throughout the year, students in the Sapirstein campus have the privilege of learningng with outstanding Kollel members who encourage the talmidim and impart a strong love for Torah. This year was the first time the school had a night-long Shavuous program; Rebbeim and Kollel fellows walked long distances to partake in the event; the talmidim were invigorated and inspired to delve anew into their studies. The very inspiring Father/Son chavrusah program fills the Beis Medrash with the sounds of Torah learning m dor l dor, from generation to generation. In the presence of a large audience, Rabbi Yoel Fleisher conducted a siyum on Meseches Kidushin. Rabbi Fleisher was joined by Ari Goldman, Shalom Dessler and Boruch Ber Lebowitz who finished this meseches. The Junior High School Chesed/Community Service program ram also pairs boys with seniors in nursing homes on a continual basis so that the boys and seniors can get to know each other. A program, which made excellent use of the gift of technology, was coordinated by Rabbi Simcha Dessler and the Academy s contact in Israel, Rabbi Yitzchok Schwartz. Junior high school students had the remarkable opportunity to participate in a live interactive video conference with Rabbi Chaim Pollock, Dean of Foreign Students Programs at Michlalah-Jerusalem in Bayit Vegan. Rabbi Pollock told stories about Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakai, and read the inscription on the kever which was a quote from Pirkei Avos. Standing at the kever, Rabbi Pollock proceeded to tell stories about the Rambam and the boys accompanied him (again virtually) to the kever of the Rambam. Despite 92 degree weather, our students took note that crowds had flocked to daven there. Talmidim participatedted in a joint Tehillim recital led by Rabbi Tzvi Maimon, mashgiach at Yeshiva High School. This was especially moving since Rabbi Maimon is a direct descendant of the Rambam. m. 3
YAVNE HIGH SCHOOL HEBREW ACADEMY TRIBUTE DINNER Yavne teachers are on the lookout for unique ways to stimulate students and promote learning. This year Hebrew language teacher Mrs. Rochel Berkowitz received a twoyear grant from the AVI CHAI Foundation to teach language using the Rosetta Stone Program. The program completely immerses students in a sequence of carefully designed activities. On their computers, students in grades 7, 10, and 11, are able to see images, hear voices of native speakers and progress naturally from words and phrases to sentences and conversations. Students benefit from this methodology. They are able to proceed at their own pace, perfect their accents, vocabulary, and general speaking and comprehension in a unique and enjoyable way. Girls at Yavne take advantage of an excellent limudei kodesh and general studies program plus many extracurricular activities. There are Shabbatonim for all grade levels and an annual production that highlights individual talents. The production includes all the students in the school, and each girl has a chance to shine, whether in drama, choir, dance, props, or organizational skills. Chessed continues as a popular pastime, encompassing once a week home visits, trips to Menorah Park Senior Center and various fundraising efforts for tzeddakah. This year students were able to connect, through videoconferencing, to programs in Israel. as noted They listened and asked questions educator The 67th annual Scholarship Tribute Dinner brought together a devoted gathering of over 600 Academy parents and friends. The Dinner paid tribute to Mr. and Mrs. Amir Jaffa and honored Dr. Mark Lovinger with the prestigious Alumni Award. A special presentation was made to Mr. and Mrs. Herschel Itzinger, the longest serving Board member, a life member of the Board and active participant on the tuition committee. The Hebrew Academy Boys Choir performed under the direction of Rabbi Simcha Mann and Rabbi Shmuel Yaakov Mann. The Dinner was chaired by Mr. and Mrs. Elie Koval, Mr. and Mrs. Andy Lefkowitz, and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Soclof. This annual highlight continues to inspire, invigorate and allow our school to and maintain its mission Yavne alumna, Rebbetzin Rena Tarshish of to provide each student Mesores Rochel Seminary, Jerusalem, taught with an individualized, them. 5 EARLY CHILDHOOD DIVISION For the second year in a row, the Hebrew Academy s Early Childhood Division has been awarded a star rating by the State of Ohio s Step Up to Quality program. When it comes to our youngest division, photographs tell it all - in the shining faces of the children, as they discover new worlds of knowledge in a delightful way, while they learn berachos and details of each Yom Tov and each parsha of the week. How heartwarming it is to see photos of Shabbos parties and children learning to identify letters and the many traditions we lovingly practice all in a nurturing environment where emphasis is placed on active learning, developing social and motor skills in a most beneficial way. The ninth annual Preschool Cookbook, The Best of the Best, was published this year. The cookbook, replete with photos and recipes of each student and their teachers, remains a lifelong keepsake and memento of the magical years spent in our Early Childhood Division. GIRLS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A highlight of every year is the Hava Nashira Mother/Daughter Motzei Shabbos sing-a-long and melaveh malkah.. This year s program was dedicated to Mrs. Beverly Koval, v g, whose memory continues to inspire students and parents alike. The program focused on the year s theme, Kol Atzmosi Tomarna, all our organs proclaim the glory of Hashem, and we have an obligation to use all the talents and strengths of our body to serve Hashem. During the timeframe between Pesach and Shavuous, students took part in the Bidrachos program of the Chofetz Chaim Heritage Foundation and earned letters in a Sefer Torah being written l zecher nishmas the Chofetz Chaim. Students solicited sponsors for an Exercise-a-thon and over $1,100 was collected for our local Bikur Cholim of Cleveland. The Student Council, under the direction of Mrs. Diane Lewis, has been Lewis very active this year. They gave signs to carpool cars to ease congestion and smooth flow. They spearheaded a campaign to have students in each grade design a quilt; these quilts will be given to local hospitals and the Cleveland Bikur Cholim house. They planted bulbs in the entranceway to the main building and spread a feeling of unity among the classes. Students took advantage of our wonderful computer lab to master keyboarding with Typeto-Learn, organizing information with Inspiration, and presenting slideshows on researched topics with PowerPoint. On long Fridays fourth graders paired with first graders to share reading and writing projects. Nutritionists, a speech therapist, and a special needs coordinator spoke to the girls. Students grew and matured in a supportive environment. 8 5
HISTORIC GEDOLIM FAIR A historic event, one that talmidim will remember for years to come, took place at our own Hebrew Academy of Cleveland. The occasion was the annual Yeshiva Ketana Gedolim Fair. The event is always a glorious celebration of what we want to teach our talmidim,, but this year added magnitude marked this wonderful event, because of the presence of contemporary Gedolim who visited the preeminent mosad, addressed talmidim and viewed the exhibits. Rabbi Asher Newman, Yeshiva Ketana Menahel,, opened the assembly by conveying the idea that the many small steps of chinuch along the way can add up to tall strides towards gadlus. Rabbi Simcha Dessler, Menahel,, Hebrew Academy of Cleveland, introduced the Roshei Yeshiva and shared detailed memories that his father, Rabbi Nochum Zev Dessler told him about being in the house of his great uncle, Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski k mz. Visiting the Academy on that day were: Rabbi Malkiel Kotler and Rabbi Dovid Shustal, Roshei Yeshiva, Beis Medrash Govoha; Rabbi Elya Brudny, Rosh Yeshiva, Mirrer Yeshiva; and Rabbi Eliyohu Dessler, mashgiach, Ponevez Yeshiva. Rabbi Kotler and Rabbi Brudny then addressed the talmidim. The talmidim researched Gedolim from various centuries and studied some of their writings. Each boy prepared a biography and a poster on their Gadol, spoke briefly about their Gadol,, described the time period when the Gadol lived, and shared a poignant story that illustrated the gadlus of their tzaddik. Each talmid chose one middah in which their Gadol excelled and undertook to improve that middah in his own personal life. The Roshei Yeshiva were most impressed by the seriousness and sincerity with which the boys undertook the project. They were further impressed when they heard each talmid had internalized a middah of their Gadol in YESHIVA KETANA DIVISION The boys in each Yeshiva Ketana class are learning and succeeding as Rebbeim and Moros inculcate midos tovos, joyfulness and enthusiasm into the curriculum. How big was Noach s teivah? First graders trekked to the local park to measure the true length and width of the ark. Second graders pledged to be careful not to speak lashon hora, slander, about each other. Third graders completed Sefer Bereishis with beautiful projects, including chalkcolored replicas of the flags of each Tribe. One class even went to Lake Erie to recite, oseh maaseh beraishis,,,, the blessing for seeing one of the Great Lakes. Fourth graders celebrated a siyum with pizza and a trip to the Kollel across the street to hear divrei Torah.. An interactive Smart Board contest intrigued and challenged fifth graders who also completed their models of kelei hamishkon. A Jewish magic show, performed by a guest from Israel taught midos in an entertaining way. Not to be forgotten the annual keriah program reinforced vital skills. Also, a highlight of every year is the BEAM program which includes a newspaper, The Honorable Mentchen, extolling commendable behavior. This year the school paired with Yeshiva Degel HaTorah in Monsey who contributed articles to the newspaper. Wearing BEAM shirts and flying BEAM kites, the boys celebrated a year of achdus, unity, and growth in interpersonal relationships. Student Council, under the direction of General Studies teacher, Mrs. Ellen Silber, conducted a very successful food drive to benefit Cleveland s Hachnosas Orchim apartment which serves many needy guests in the community. They sent thank you cards to all the teachers and conducted a successful pizza fundraiser. Always helpful and courteous, the Student Council served as excellent role models for the rest of the school. positive action. Rabbi Dessler related that even many years later, former talmidim reflect on the Gedolim Fair and how this project strengthened and enhanced their avodas Hashem. Talmidim giving a personal sholom aleichim to the Roshei Yeshiva. 6 7

QUOTABLE QUOTES FROM OUR STUDENTS: When I was in the fourth grade, I had a burning desire to learn as much as I could...my parents came up with a great idea and asked me if I wanted to go to Camp S.T.E.P., the Hebrew Academy s camp. When Camp S.T.E.P. was over, I was so greatly inspired by the way the kids interacted and the way they behaved, and we learned so much Torah that I thought if this is how much they learn at camp, then I couldn t wait to see how much they learn during the school year. When school started, I was a bit nervous (as you can imagine), but I got more comfortable after a while. I loved everything! The reason why I loved and enjoyed everything so much was because of the way the teachers and Rebbeim interacted with us, and because of that I love being at the Hebrew Academy and it keeps me enthused. Maverick V. (Avigdor Leib) Peters, Student Council President. My initial reaction to the school was that it was a warm and lovely place. Lots of girls came over to me and introduced themselves. The teachers were accessible and friendly. There were many extracurricular activities and the academics were good. The spirit of the school is very upbeat. Rella Morris (boarder from Columbus, Ohio; Rella s older sister graduated from Yavne and her younger sister now attends.) The theme of our school s Shabbaton is Just as water reflects a face back to a face, so too the heart of one person reflects that of another. As long as we remember to keep giving and putting the effort that is needed into our relationships, then they will serve as a beacon of light for us always. Bracha Greenfeld (Yavne student speaking at the annual Shabbaton) FROM OUR ALUMNI: We would like to thank you for all the work you do to make the Hebrew Academy the place it is. Both of us truly feel that we would not be the people we are today without everything that we received from the Academy. Noach and Miriam Kraut The truth is I learned a lot in the school, not only in learning but in important life lessons. I learned the right perspectives we should have and how we should conduct ourselves as Orthodox Jews. These were the foundation years which taught me things that even ten years in yeshiva didn t teach me, but I was able to magnify what I learned with my Torah learning. I plan to continue the legacy which was taught to me. Elisha and Malka Bensoussan AWARD WINNING EXCERPTS: When knowledge, wisdom, and Torah are combined, all can be solved, and a bleak future will look bright again. Rochel Leah Victor (Yavne Senior, National Robert Byrd Scholarship Winner) Industriousness means putting in tremendous effort while going above and beyond what is normally expected in order to achieve a goal or dream. Without industriousness, we fail to accomplish our goals, and our dreams remain unrealized.
