1 ד June 20, 2018 פרשת חקת ז' תמוז תשע''ח בס Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, zt"l, Rav of Yerushalayim, would dance with hundreds of children as he celebrated the fes val of Simchas Torah. JULY 2 First day of Camp STEP AUGUST 10 Last day of Camp STEP HAVE A WONDERFUL SUMMER!!! 8:45 One Simchas Torah, a child approached the venerable sage and asked the following ques on: Toward the end of Musaf we recite Ein Kelokeinu, There is none like our G d, There is none like our Master, followed by Mi Kelokeinu, Who is like our G d? Who is like our Master? Should the prayer not be reversed? Shouldn't we first ask: Who is like our G d" and then respond that "There is none like our G d!" The Rav responded with a smile, a compliment, and the following parable: A wise individual navigates a long, darkened cave by crea ng various markings in order to find his way back to safety. The fool, however, rushes haphazardly into the cave, fails to create a path for himself and is therefore at risk of starva on or worse. So, too, explained the Rav: We are required to establish signs and boundaries for ourselves lest we stray from the derech hachaim, the proper way of life and the path of our ancestors. Thus, first and foremost, we must acknowledge: "There is none like our G d, there is none like our Master!" Firm in our convic on, we are now on the correct path the King's Road ready to ask: Who is like our G d? (See reference in this week s parsha to derech hamelech nelech, we will travel on the King s Road). This child was soon to leave Yerushalayim for an extended period of me and Rabbi Sonnenfeld cau oned him to establish his own points of reference to remember his Jewish iden ty and the path set forth by his ancestors who preceded him. Forty years later, the child now an adult and a Holocaust survivor returned to Yerushalayim tes fying that throughout the horrors and atroci es of World War II he was o en ready to give up but each me this happened he remembered the advice of Rabbi Sonnenfeld and he never forgot his message. Indeed, he endured pain and suffering but merited to emerge from the abyss because of the boundaries he established for himself. In our lives, any transi on requires a plan for success. As we enter a well deserved summer vaca on, we, too, ought to establish signs and points of reference for our children. Youngsters of all ages thrive on rou ne and structure. Vaca on is a welcomed me, but it can come at a steep cost if we fail to u lize it properly and reinforce the past year s produc ve schedule of learning. If we set goals, objec ves and boundaries for our children over the summer, we will prepare them for a win win opportunity: a reinforcement of the past year's academics and a chance to relax a bit and energize for the coming year as well. Let s celebrate a year of fabulous growth, development and success! And let s also u lize the vaca on period for con nued growth, mechayil el chayil, from strength to strength! 2 Yeshiva Ketana Where do we begin to describe all that has been happening in the Yeshiva Ketana during these last few days of school? On Monday, we went on our end of the year trips. Although the temperature was warm, all of the boys had a fantas c me (we brought lots of drinks with us!). Grades 1,2 had a fun morning at the JCC Park and Grades 3 6 went to Fun n Stuff with their Rebbeim. Right before the trip, Aryeh Gurwitz had his upsherin in Rabbi Ellis s second grade classroom. Mazal tov to his parents and family may they only have nachas! The sixth grade boys had a class BBQ and baseball game last week at Cain Park. On Sunday a ernoon, they had their annual Gedolim Fair at school. The boys each chose a gadol who they presented in a short oral presenta on for parents. The auditorium was filled with tri folds displaying pictures and informa on about each Gadol. Parents who came to view the displays were very impressed with all of the effort that was obviously put into these projects. A special thanks to Rabbi Fleisher and Rabbi Sokol for all of their efforts on behalf of their talmidim the en re year! It is always bi ersweet as the sixth grade boys move on to another campus but we look forward to their growth in limud hatorah and middos tovos. Hatzlacha Rabbah to all of them! Immediately following the Gedolim Fair, our annual BEAM Siyum and Raffle took place with the usual excitement. Mazel tov to the following boys who took part in the Siyum: 4 th Grade: Yaakov Margulies, Yuma / Moed; Meir Rokowsky, Sukkah / Moed 5 th Grade: Gad Zuckerman, Nezikin / Bava Basra; Moshe Gold, Beitzah / Moed 6 th Grade: Reuven Schlanger, Pesachim / Moed Shlomo Zalman Kutoff, Zevachim/Kodshim. A er a delicious meal (special thanks to Mrs. Greenberger for all of her prepara ons), the boys saw an amazing slideshow about BEAM s year in pictures which they watched in awe. (Special thanks to Rabbi Weimer for crea ng the video and to Rabbi Klein for all of his efforts in se ng it up with the right equipment!) The highlight of the gathering was the Grand Raffle. The prizes seforim and toys were amazing and the boys had hundreds of ckets for all of the learning that took place over the past few months. Thank you to all of the parents and talmidim at the Siyum who were so helpful se ng up, serving and cleaning up as well. Close to 15,000 Mishnayos and lines of Gemara this year l zeicher nishmas Reb Mendy Klein, z l were learned by Yeshiva Ketana boys in grades 3 6 truly an accomplishment to be proud of! Everyone went home very happy and excited to have par cipated in the program. Thank you to all of the fathers who came with their sons and who helped clean up a erwards it was very much appreciated. Thank you to Rabbi Weimer for spearheading this program which the boys appreciate and par cipate in enthusias cally. Thank you to the Klein Family for sponsoring this event our hakoras hatov is boundless for your support and generosity. May we con nue to have much nachas from all of the learning of our talmidim! Our school year ended with our end of the year slide show, a recap of all of the good memories the boys shared during the school year. We wish everyone a safe, healthy and enjoyable summer. We are already looking forward to the many wonderful changes in store in the upcoming school year. Remember that learning goes with fun in the summer! Have a great summer! 3 Junior High School All three seventh grade classes received bechinos this Monday by Rabbi Zev Busel, Rosh Kollel, Kollel Ateres Nochum Zev. Rabbi Busel commented how impressed he was how well the boys knew the Gemara! Mazel tov to Yosef Fertel and Yeshaya Weinberg upon comple ng 1000 daf of chazara!! The 8 th grade went on an amazing gradua on trip. The trip began with kayaking down the Portage River in Port Clinton, Ohio. They con nued to South Bend where they were graciously hosted by the Yeshiva of South Bend. They had an evening of fun with a Barbeque and indoor/outdoor sports. A er a short night of sleep, the next day began with an upli ing Rosh Chodesh Shacharis at the Telshe Yeshiva in Chicago, followed by breakfast and an inspira onal message from Rabbi Eisenbach, the Mashgiach of the Yeshiva. From there, the boys began a tour through mul ple a rac ons in Chicago beginning with Play and Spin, a new, fun game center, followed by an amazingly fun Segway tour on the Lakefront of Downtown Chicago. They con nued on a speed boat tour on Lake Michigan, viewing the Chicago skyline. As the day was coming to an end, the boys were treated to a special supper at Taboun Grill. The trip culminated with a special night swim at Skokie Water Park where the boys enjoyed a private pool and water slides. The boys were accompanied by Rabbi Sturman, Rabbi Meisels and Rabbi C. Dessler. It was a great experience which the boys will treasure forever. In General Studies, the students had numerous culmina ng projects in science. Each seventh grader built his own eco system, populated it with wildlife and observed how it flourished. In Geography, the boys researched and presented a mul faceted display on a state of their choice. This included a trifold full of informa on, maps, and a diorama of their state. 4 Girls Elementary It is so hard to believe that the school year has ended! The girls have learned so much and grown so much! The year ended with so many celebra ons of learning and accomplishment. The 6 th grade girls performed a beau ful cantata on the theme of the zayin nevios for their mothers and rela ves. Their enthusiasm as they sang, danced and acted was great fun to watch. A erwards the gym was transformed beau fully by Mrs. Aliza Koval and Mrs. Shana Goldberg, and a sumptuous brunch was served. It was a truly wonderful ending to their years at Taylor Road! The fourth grade girls worked extremely hard this year to learn all of the lamed tes melachos. This week they organized a fair in the auditorium where each girl displayed her melacha with an ac vity and prize to reinforce it! The girls knew their melachos cold, and we are confident that their shemiras Shabbos will be much enhanced! Last but not least, we commend these girls who have the impressive dis nc on of comple ng the en re SPARK program (yedios klallios) this means that they learned more informa on than was required for their grade level: Sorah Berkowitz (6th) Chayala Maimon (4th) Nechama Marcovich (4th) and Rashi Klahr (3rd). Camp STEP If you have not, as of yet, registered for a fantas c summer at Camp STEP, registra on forms are a ached for your convenience. Camp begins for all divisions on Monday, July 2nd. Please note that we will be using the Remind program over the Summer to send out important messages. To sign up for this group, please to Inside the Academy Page 4 June 20, 2018

The boys were asked to create a packing that would hold a raw egg which would be dropped from the school s roof. The container was limited in size, but not in material. The boys had to consider how far and fast the egg would fall. The goal was to build a container that would prevent breakage. Many boys were successful, while others had "egg" on their face. No ma er how each drop ended, the students were "cracking" up with the ac vity! Inside the Academy Page 5 June 20, 2018
6 Early Childhood Division Last Friday, Morah Chanie and Morah Bassy s four year olds marched up on stage, one child at a me, adorned in lovely blue capes and gradua on hats. For an audience of extremely proud parents, grandparents, rela ves, siblings, and friends, their gradua on began. Mrs. Scho enstein expressed her hakoras hatov to Hashem for placing her in such a special seviva, first as a morah, then as an administrator for the last 37 years. She informed everyone that she would be re ring at the end of July and that Mrs. Rivky Wolf would be taking over as administrator. She then expressed her hakoras hatov to the talented moros, to the parents, to the children, and to Mr. Yudi Silber and gave divrei brocha. Then the real program began with a medley of wonderful songs by the children whose personali es shown through as they came up to the microphone. Next, the children all stood up behind colored hoops and followed the songs direc ons, walking inside and outside the circles, hopping, jumping, skipping, and it was evident to all that they were having a great me. The audience really enjoyed watching these children in ac on. The program ended with Morah Chanie invi ng all the parents to her classroom for a party. Many of our classes have worked on an end of the year project to be taken home to enjoy. Some of our classes have even had each child create a journal, a memory of this year in preschool and of how much each has grown. Next year, IY H, Morah Dina Platschek and Morah Chasi Rosner will be teaching a four year old class. Morah Naomi Compton will be taking over their three year old class for the full day. In addi on, Morah Devorah Freund and Morah Chanie Moseson will be working together in a four year old class. The year has come to an end and it has flown by. B H all of our children have grown in so many ways. Most of our k tan tan children have had their upsherin and are now wearing yarmulkes and tzitzis. All of our children have grown physically, are taller, can navigate the stairs and our playground equipment with ease, are learning how to assemble puzzles, to cut, to color, to draw, to paint. They now have preschool friends and have learned how to be an appropriate part of a group, how to take turns, how to share, how to communicate clearly their needs and wants, how to problem solve, and how to be pa ent. They have improved their language skills and can understand and respond properly to ques ons. They have had the skill of using their words modeled for them constantly by their moros. They have grown tremendously in their enthusiasm for learning Torah, knowledge of the mitzvos, and love for Yiddishkeit. And all of this growth is due to the hard work, dedica on, crea vity, caring, love, and devo on of their unbelievable moros who invested this year in accomplishing all of these goals. They have toiled endlessly on our children s behalf, deserve our extreme hakoras hatov, and can now sit back, relax, shep nachas, and then plan for the coming year, for a new group of Yiddishe neshamos to be molded and shaped. We wish all our families, parents and children, a safe and relaxing summer, a me to spend with one another, enjoying the beauty and specialness of having families together. 7 Yavne High School The Yavne High School gradua on was celebrated on Monday evening at the Beatrice Stone Yavne High School building. It was a beau ful culmina on of the girls educa on and an cipa on of the wonderful adventures that await them. We were honored to hear inspira onal words from our Limudei Kodesh Valedictorian, Tzippy Ma a, the Limudei Kodesh Salutatorian and General Studies Valedictorian, Devorah Goldbaum, and the General Studies Salutatorian, Dasi Chafetz. The Beatrice Stone Middos Award and Scholarship is presented to a Yavne graduate who is judged by her teachers to be most exemplary in good middos and service to the school. While there were many candidates, this year the award went to Devora Goldbaum. We wish all our well deserving graduates hatzlacha as they con nue to go m chayil el chayil. Special thanks to our MC of the program, Dr. Shlomo Koyfman. Thank you to 11 th grade parent volunteers, Mrs. Milana Gofman, Mrs. Bassy Gutman, Mimi Solomon and Shoshana Vitebskiy and Mrs. Esther Keller for coordina ng the recep on following the ceremony. This past Sunday night, Yavne High School students took a break from their studies, and a ended a deluxe G.O. closing banquet. G.O heads, Dena Freedman and Tammy Gutman worked hard to coordinate the event. Rabbi Yitzchok Kahn addressed the girls. His message was powerful, charging the girls to PLEASE make their summer produc ve and posi ve in all aspects. Menaheles Kohn then read a le er wri en by a student expressing hakaras hatov for all that her teachers had done for her. The sen ments in the le er are definitely shared by most of our students. There was music and some dancing and the very exci ng announcement who next year s G.O., chessed, and mishmeres heads will be. The evening was a fi ng finale to a wonderful year in Yavne! Mazel tov! Mr. & Mrs. Shmuel Feuer on the upcoming marriage of Nomi to Tzvi Newman. Mazel tov to Mr. & Mrs. Murray Koval.
