talk 1 - times are tough! Habakkuk 1:1-4 & 2 Corinthians 1:1-11 It s not fair!! Introducing Habakkuk who is he? Habakkuk lives in tough times The World we live in is also tough at times Sin is the reason life is tough at times Call out to God when life gets tough 8
STUDY 1 - times are tough! Habakkuk 1: What would be your ideal life as you look into the future? 2. As you think about Habakkuk s situation in Hab. 1:1-4, what do you see around you where you live? In Australia? Throughout the world? Are things today any different from Habakkuk s time 3. What are some things in life that have caused you concern or distress? 4. Why do we have these difficulties in life (thinking of Habakkuk s and our situations)? 5. What is the purpose of trials/difficulties in our lives? Look James 1:2-4 and 1 Peter 1:6-7. 9
6. What do you do when you re feeling unsure or upset about things happening in your life? 7. How is Habakkuk a model for us when we feel troubled by something? 8. Do you find it hard to pray during tough times? Why or why not? 10
Talk 2 - God s Unexpected Response Habakkuk 1:5-2:1 & Ephesians 2:1-10 You re gonna do what? Some people think being a Christian makes life easy God Answers Habakkuk in an Unexpected Way The Babylonians are Coming Habakkuk starts to think about God s ways but doesn t fully understand God has done something unexpected for us Habakkuk is willing to wait for God s answer 11
STUDY 2 - God s Unexpected Response Habakkuk 1:5-2:1 1. What s your response to God sending the Babylonians? 2. Why did God raise up the Babylonians? 3. What does this plan of using the Babylonians tell us about God? 4. How is Habakkuk s prayer in 1:12-13 different from his prayer in 1:2-3? 5. Who is this God whom Habakkuk is calling on? List the attributes of God found in v12-14? 12
6. What is the hope that Habakkuk holds onto (v12)? Look also at John 10:28-29 and Romans 8: What can we learn from Habakkuk and these other references? 7. What is Habakkuk s attitude in 2:1? 8. Think back to your answer in Study 1, question 1. God may or may not grant you your desire in life. What can you learn from Habakkuk? 13
Talk 3 - God will and does make things right Habakkuk 2:2-20 & Revelation 7:9-17 It s all too easy not! God has given us the Bible to show us what He has done and will do God use of the Babylonians is a temporary measure God is in control of what happens in life God has something far greater in store for us Our response - live by faith in Jesus 14
Talk 3 - God will and does make things right Habakkuk 2: God s response to Habakkuk is to write down the revelation. Describe the characteristics of the revelation in v God has given us His revelation in the Bible. How does v2-3 apply to us as we read the Bible? 3. The he mentioned in 2:4 is a reference to the Babylonians. How do the Babylonians live? 4. What is the encouragement that God gives to Habakkuk in v6-19? 5. How has God responded to our sin problem? Was that surprising? 6. How will God respond to the problem of sin in the future? 15
7. How are we to live before God, whose glory, according to v14, will fill the whole earth (v4, 20)? Compare this to how the Babylonians were living? 8. God is saying to Habakkuk that He is in control. How do you think God being in control will help you through life? 16
Talk 4 - Responding to God by Trusting Him Habakkuk 3 & Philippians 4:4-20 The Good Old Days God is a God of wrath and mercy Habakkuk s Response (& ours) rejoice in the Lord, even in tough times God will supply everything we need Will you be content whatever situation God takes you through? 17
STUDY 4 - Responding to God by Trusting Him Habakkuk 3 1. As Habakkuk remembers what God has done (v2-15), what do you think he is expecting? 2. Habakkuk remembers how God has acted in the past. Name some of the things where God has acted in history. 3. Can you name times in your life or of someone in your family where God has acted? What sort of things can you remember? 4. What is the greatest act that God has done for us? What has He achieved for us? 18
5. Think about where Habakkuk has come from in 1:1-4. How has he changed? 6. What does Habakkuk s response to what God has said teach us how we are to live? 19
Quiet Times What is Quiet Time? It is the time set aside each day or regularly, to meet with God. God wants to speak to us (through Bible reading) and He wants us to speak to Him (through prayer). Quiet time is not a duty or a commandment, but a privilege and response to God s love for you. Psalm 19:10, says this about God s words, They are more precious than gold, than much pure gold; they are sweeter than honey, than honey from the comb. As you read and meditate upon God s word, you will be encouraged and strengthened in your faith. This year, we will use S.O.A.P. S.O.A.P. is a method of Bible reading and study. It can be used with any daily Bible reading plan. This will give you an opportunity to learn a simple system that you will be able to use when you get home, through the rest of the year, and maybe for many years to come. S for Scripture Open your Bible to today s reading. Pray that God will help you understand this section, then take some time to read through it carefully. Look through the rest of S.O.A.P. and then read the Bible section again. O for Observation What struck you and caught your attention in what you read? What do you think God was saying to the original readers? What are the key words in this passage? Is there a main theme? Write down these thoughts. A for Application Personalize what you have read, by asking yourself how it applies to your life right now. Is it some instruction, or encouragement? Have you learned something wonderful about God? Does it reveal something about your life? Write how this scripture can apply to you today. P for Prayer This can be as simple as asking God to help you use this scripture, or it may be a greater insight on what He may be revealing to you. Spend some time praying, and then write a brief prayer. 20
Quiet Time Wednesday 10th April 2014 Scripture Pray that God will help you, then read Matthew 16: Observation What did you observe in this section. Application What applies to your life? Prayer Write a short prayer. 21
Quiet Time Thursday 11th April 2014 Scripture Pray that God will help you, then read Matthew 16: Observation What did you observe in this section. Application What applies to your life? Prayer Write a short prayer. 22
