12 לחמן החטיבה הפסיכומטרית 10 A. Reading Comprehension The Smurfs (Les Schtroumpfs in French) are a fictional group of small blue creatures who live in mushroom-shaped houses somewhere in the forests of Europe. The Belgian cartoonist Peyo introduced Smurfs to the world, but English-speakers perhaps know them best through the animated television series. Peyo wrote a comic series in Le Journal de Spirou called "Johan & Pirlouit". The setting lies in the Middle Ages in Europe. Johan serves as a brave young page to the king, and Peewit (pronounced Pee-Wee) functions as his faithful, if boastful and cheating, midget sidekick. At the end of the 1950 s, Peyo introduced a new set of characters to the "Johan & Pirlouit" story. This alone caused no great excitement, as the brave duo constantly encountered strange new people and places. This time, they had the mission of recovering a Magic Flute, which required some sorcery by the wizard Homnibus. And in this manner, they met a schtroumpf. The figures soon proved to be a huge success, and the first independent smurf stories appeared in 1959, together with the first merchandising. Schtroumpf" is an invented word. According to Peyo, the word came to him as he asked a friend for salt during lunch and, struggling to find the word that eluded him, finally managed to say "passe-moi le schtroumpf" ("pass me the smurf"). 14 לחמן החטיבה הפסיכומטרית 12 B People have enjoyed chewing gum-like substances in many lands and from very early times. Some of these materials were extracted from certain kinds of trees and others were various sweet grasses, leaves, grains and waxes. The ancient Greeks adopted this habit and for centuries chewed mastic gum (or mastiche pronounced "mas-tee-ka"). This is the resin obtained from the bark of the mastic tree, found on the island of Chios, Greece. Grecian women especially favored chewing mastic gum to clean their teeth and sweeten their breath. From the Indians of New England, the American colonists learned to chew the gum-like resin that formed on spruce trees when the bark was cut. Lumps of spruce gum were sold in the eastern United States during the early 1800s, making it the first commercial chewing gum in this country. In about 1850, sweetened paraffin wax became popular and eventually exceeded spruce gum in popularity. In 1845, after he was defeated by the Americans in Texas, Mexican General Santa Anna was exiled to New York. Like many of his countrymen, Santa Anna chewed chicle. One day he introduced it to inventor Thomas Adams, who began experimenting with it as a substitute for rubber. Adams was the one who thought of flavoring the chicle. Shortly, he opened the world s first chewing gum factory. Gum made with chicle and similar latexes soon won favor over spruce gum and paraffin gum. It made possible a smooth, springy, satisfying chew that the others lacked, and it held flavors longer and better. Most sloths are about the size of a small dog and they have short, flat heads. Their hair is grayish brown, but at times they look grey-green in color because they move so slowly that tiny camouflaging algae grow all over their coats. Sloths are nocturnal and sleep curled up with their head placed between the arms and the feet drawn close together. This disguises them as part of a tree so that their enemies (e.g. the jaguar) do not see them. Sloths rarely climb down from the trees and can live for up to 30 years. Some sloths stay in the same tree for years. Their huge hooked claws and long arms allow them to spend most of their time hanging upside-down from trees. Since they have a slow metabolism, they need very little food. They feed on fruit, leaves, buds, and young twigs. Sloths also sleep upside-down for up to 18 hours at a time. Mothers also give birth to babies upside-down. Babies cling to their mothers until they are able to take care of themselves. Questions 20. The 1 st paragraph mainly deals with the issue of - (1) the different species of sloths (2) the appearance of the sloth (3) mammals who sloth around (4) introducing the sloth

A good title for the text could be - (1) Different Species of Sloths in the Tropical Forest (2) Slow Death - The Sloth's Enemies (3) The Upside of Living Upside-Down (4) Never In A Rush - The Eccentric Sloth

24 לחמן החטיבה הפסיכומטרית 22 Text II (Questions 25-29) Born in 1892 in Bloemfontein, South Africa, Tolkien was the child of English parents who had recently immigrated to South Africa. He, his brother and his mother returned to England when he was 4 and, after receiving news of their father's death, remained there. They lived in the countryside outside of Birmingham and were raised as devout Roman Catholics. His mother died when he was 11 and he and his brother were looked after by her family and by their guardian Father Francis Morgan, a Catholic Priest. The young Tolkien had a gift for languages which was encouraged and developed at an academic grammar school in Birmingham. He gained entry into Oxford University and earned First Class Honours in English. He then married his childhood sweetheart Edith and went on to eventually have four children. After serving in the Army in World War One, where he fought in the trenches of the terrible Battle of the Somme, he became a lecturer at Leeds University. In 1925 he was honored to become a Professor of English Language at Oxford University where he remained the rest of his life. Tolkien started to develop the languages Qenya and Sindarin from his student days at Oxford: these and their associated poems and myths were further developed during his service as an officer in WWI. He worked on these again and again throughout his life. These eventually became the stories of the First Age of the world of Middle-earth. In the 1937, a story he had created and read to his children about a Hobbit and his adventure with a wizard named Gandalf and a dozen Dwarves became an instant children's favorite when published. A sequel was asked for which grew out of hand and closer to the as yet unpublished Silmarillion in character and vision. It took many years to write, and was eventually published, in as his ultimate masterpiece: 'The Lord of the Rings'.

25 לחמן החטיבה הפסיכומטרית 23 Questions 25. The word "gift" (line 9) could also mean - (1) talent (2) present (3) souvenir (4) bequest 27. The terrible Battle of the Somme - (1) helped Tolkien to become a lecturer at Leeds University (2) was fought by Tolkien during WWI (3) was fought only in trenches (4) led to the eventual honouring of Tolkien 28. The 4 th paragraph mainly discusses - (1) the languages of Qenya and Sindarin (2) the early works of Tolkien (3) poems and myths of Middle - Earth (4) the comparison between Qenya and Sindarin 29. What is the author s opinion about 'The Lord of the Rings'? (1) That it was eventually published in (2) That it started out as a children s story (3) That it was written before the Silmarillion (4) That it was Tolkien s best work
