21 Argumentative Writing Sample Capital punishment results in death by execution. It is legal in many states as a punishment for serious crimes, but that does not make it right. Capital punishment should be stopped because it is morally wrong, expensive, and such a slow process. First of all, there is no moral basis for it. When we use the death penalty, we are following the criminals' example by doing something equally as bad ourselves. We are taking one life for another life. There is also a chance that a mistake will be made, and the wrong person will be put to death. Is this type of revenge worth such a risk? Another problem with capital punishment is the high cost. For example, the special prison housing is expensive to staff and keep up. States with the death penalty use taxes to pay these expenses. Over the past 13 years, Florida has spent $57 million to carry out 18 executions. If you divide this dollar amount by the number of executions, you come up with a cost of $3.2 million for each execution. That is a great deal of money. In addition, using the death penalty is a very slow process. At least 97 percent of all death-row prisoners are not executed on time. As a result, the waiting list for executions grows year after year. If the U.S. legal system executed one inmate every day, it would still take 30 years to empty all of the cells on death row. A process this slow does not make sense. In conclusion, capital punishment should be dropped from our legal system. People should see that it is morally wrong. If not, then common sense should tell them that it doesn't work well since it is so expensive and such a slow process. Source:

28 What do you see when you turn on the TV? Fist fights at the Legislative Yuan, a high suicide rate and a drastic rise in oil prices and other daily necessities. What do you run into when walking on the street? A bad smell from vehicle exhaust and litter here and there. As the president of Taiwan, I feel sad about the current situation of our nation every time I catch a glimpse of the scenes mentioned above. Taiwan's reputation as a democratic country and an island abundant in natural resources has been gradually replaced by the images of brutality, pollution and piracy. We can be better than that. It is my dream that Taiwan will be the demonstration of true civilization, with politicians as well as citizens negotiating rationally when facing conflicts, instead of resorting to violence and force. It is my dream that Taiwan will be praised because of its protection of the environment and the pursuit of sustainable green homeland. It is my dream that people worldwide will give their thumbs up when Taiwan is mentioned, and it is also my dream that all Taiwanese people will be proud of themselves. However, my dream won t come true if my people don t dream the same dream. I myself can do so little, but if all Taiwanese unite together, with twenty-three million hearts connected to the same goal, the big, brand new Taiwanese dream will definitely become a reality. So let us fulfill our dream step by step. First of all, I plan to improve the education of students of all ages, highlighting the importance of ethics, honesty, and the ability to handle stress. I propose that teachers should not only teach academic lessons but build good character. In this way, students can better handle difficulties, tell right from wrong, and find proper ways to express their feelings. Secondly, to stop the physical fights in the Legislative Yuan from remaining a bad example for the youth, I will pass a law which bans such action. Anyone who violates this law will be fined or punished. Thirdly, I plan to spread the idea of ecofriendliness, buying green produce, and the preservation of natural resources. By cultivating these habits, we can balance economic growth with environmental preservation. To sum up, only with determination to improve education, public decency, and environmental protection can we realize the dream that we all have a dream that Taiwan will be renowned for its democracy, beauty, and its people! We do have the ability to fulfill our dreams!
