1 בס"ד KTC Connections F R I D A Y 2 7 T H O C T O B E R T H C H E S H V A N Weekly Parshas - Lech Lecha Candle Lighting - 7:00 pm Shabbos Ends - 7:59 pm A Global Shabbat: reaching out across time and space In 2013, the Chief Rabbi of South Africa, Rabbi Dr Warren Goldstein, called on the South African community to keep the Shabbat of 14 October together. Little did he realise at that stage, that in honour of Shabbat Lech Lecha, he would be starting a worldwide project. Streets were closed in Johannesburg, communities came together, and there was a drive to encourage many people who had never kept Shabbat before, to experience the incredible spirituality of a day, where one relinquishes control over ones own particular world, and surrenders oneself to a re-connection with Hashem. Communities around the world were inspired by this concept and decided to join the Jewish community of South Africa in observing an inter-community global Shabbat Project. This is an amazing concept: Jews from all backgrounds with different languages, cultures, histories, levels of observance all keeping Shabbat in a deep and meaningful way, and in a spirit of Achdut. The original concept was to try to spread the beauty and the depth and the spirituality of Shabbat. When the Shabbat Project became a global movement, it established the Shabbat Project Manifesto: Together we will keep this Shabbat from sundown to stars out; We will keep it in its entirety, in all of its detail and splendour, as it has been kept throughout the ages; Its rhythm will unite us with Jews around the world and throughout the ages; On this day, we will create a warm and loving space, holding our families together; On this day, we will lay down the burdens, distractions, demands and pressures of daily life; On this day, we will renew ourselves, emerging spiritually, emotionally and physically invigorated; On this day, we will own our precious heritage, wearing it as a badge of pride and honour; Together we embark on this great adventure, to rediscover our G-d-given gift, of Shabbat. Communities across Sydney, and indeed the whole of Australia, join with communities all over the world in embarking on a spiritual journey that mirrors and echoes the journey Avraham Avinu took when he heard those immortal words, Lech Lecha from Hashem. May this Shabbat Project help us discover for ourselves, our own journey, and may we too hear the words of Lech Lecha as we enjoy the spirituality of this particular Shabbat, where we try to encourage all those around us to discover for themselves, why Shabbat has kept Judaism and the Jewish people connected to Hashem for thousands of years. Shira Dadon and Batya Moss, Year 7 Tue 14 - Nov Year K Orientation Morning #1 Wed 15 - Nov High School - Oztag Thu 16 - Nov Aleph Beis Siyum Sun 19 - Nov Rosh Chodesh Kislev Week 6 Mon 20 - Nov Rosh Chodesh Kislev Primary Assembly Dvar Torah Parshas Lech L'cha This week we begin reading about the story of Avraham Avinu the first Jew and founder of our nation with the call from Hashem to leave your land, your birthplace, your father s house and go to the land that I will show you. What a strange beginning for the story - there is no description of Avraham, no history of his childhood simply a call from Hashem. The Zohar picking up on this point explains the significance of this call. The call from Hashem IS a description of Avraham. The Zohar states that Hashem actually calls out to everyone it is simply that Avraham was the only one who was receptive and heard Hashem s calling. This also mirrors the Midrash s description of Avraham s childhood. As a young child Avraham began to look and ponder about the world around him and began to hear the call of Hashem from within the natural world. The sun rising in the east and setting in the west, the stars, moon, sky and wind all of these were really the great handiwork of Hashem. Avraham heard His call. Avraham is called the Father of the Jewish people not only because he is our biological ancestor but because we have inherited our Jewish values and Middos from Avraham. Hashem is the source of all good. As children of Avraham, we must see the good and positive in everything. We all go through our day and seem to be dulled by its routine and repetition. Each day seems like the last and there is nothing special about it. However, like Avraham, we must hear Hashem s call - find the beauty in the regular and find inspiration in the ordinary. The sun rises and sets every day for everyone but only an Avraham hears His call. Good Shabbos Rabbi Richter

5 Learning Centre What is Visualising and Verbalising? If I can t picture it, I can t understand it. - Albert Einstein Do you read the words on a page but still struggle to comprehend sentences or paragraphs? Can you tell a story verbally but are challenged when it comes to expressing it in written form? Visualising and Verbalising is a program that assists students to process information and build pictures in their minds. When the reader creates mental images and relates them to his/her own experiences and knowledge, the content becomes more meaningful and concrete. This makes it easier to recall information and put it into one s own words. The school was privileged to have Andy Russel, the Executive Centre Director of Lindamood Bell Double Bay and Singapore, to address the Primary staff on the practical application of Visualising and Verbalising in the classroom. This program is regularly used in the Learning Centre, largely to develop comprehension and written expression skills. How we use Visualising and Verbalising in the Learning Centre. The teacher guides the reader to process language visually and express their language verbally, by asking probing questions from the text. For example, the students are given a short paragraph and asked to read one sentence at a time. After reading the stimulus, the students are asked, What do these words make you picture? The teacher questions the student with key structure words such as: who, what, where, size, colour, number, shape etc. These prompts enable the student to add detail to their sentences and make meaning by connecting the content to their knowledge. The students are required to give a verbal summary of each sentence, whilst simultaneously putting down a coloured square. The process is repeated for each sentence of the paragraph in order to create a mental image. Research suggests that both sides of the brain need to be engaged to make sense of reading and that the ability to process information forms the foundation for higher order comprehension and thinking skills. This is exactly what Visualising and Verbalising achieves. Lisa Goldberg & Wendy Altman

6 Primary School Welcome back to Term 4! What an incredible 2 weeks it has been! The students have returned to school inspired and energised from the Yomim Tovim and the school is abuzz with the sound of Tefillah, Torah and learning. We may be nearing the end of the year, but the students are not stopping! We re pushing the boundaries in all areas, making the most of the time we still have. Here are just some of our highlights: Year K students are reading Hebrew with multiple nekudos, our Year 1 students are just weeks away from learning the last vowel, Year 3 are completing their second Parsha of Chumash this year, and Year 5 are doing an in-depth study and creative work on the 39 Melachos of Shabbos. This is just a taste of the terrific Torah learning happening now at KTC. This week we have also focused on Shabbos as part of the Shabbat Project and the students designed and decorated tiles which will come together as a gigantic mosaic. On Friday, we are planning a special pre-shabbos Kumzitz, where the students will join together in song and will hear inspirational stories. This term we look forward to celebrating with our Year K students at their Aleph Beis Siyum, taking place on Thursday 16 November at 9:15a.m. Wishing you and your family a wonderful term of learning and growth. Rabbi Milecki Head of Jewish Studies Primary Jewish Schools Chess Competition For some students, this was their first encounter at the annual Jewish Schools Chess Competition. Two months prior to the Competition, boys in Year 3-6 came once a week to the Chess Club to play and enhance their skills. On 18 September, KTC sent three teams to represent the school at the Jewish inter-school competition. There was a lot of excitement amongst the boys. The Chess competition offered something different and unique. Our three teams would be playing against students from various Jewish schools throughout the day. Our teams got off to a slow start, just getting a feel for the environment and who they were up against, but as the day went on, their confidence grew and they began to win games in both the Junior and Senior divisions. It was a long day, with pleasant results. A number of students won between 5-8 of their games Each student won at least 2 games. There was a wonderful atmosphere at the Jewish Schools Chess Competition. The boys showed a lot of respect towards one another and there was a sense of good sportsmanship amongst the schools. Many students have expressed their desire to compete next year and have begun learning and practicing their Chess skills. Rabbi Barber

10 High School Encouraging Your Child to Write We all need a little help and encouragement at times, just as students need both help and encouragement to write outside of school. For some, writing can be daunting and as parents, it is your role as an advocate to help them. Writing is an essential tool for life, it is: practical an important element in education an important element in any work place an important form of communication it can be an important outlet. To help you child with writing, below are some ideas on how to encourage the writing process. Provide a place set them up somewhere in the house that they can decorate and feel like it s a place where they want to write Provide materials Pens a variety of different kinds Pencils A desk and lamp Pads of paper, stationery, envelopes -- even stamps A dictionary appropriate to the child's age and needs. Most dictionary use is for checking spelling, but a good dictionary contains fascinating information on word origins, synonyms, pronunciation, and so forth. A thesaurus for older children. This will help in the search for the "right" word. Erasers or "white-out" liquid for correcting errors that the child wants to repair without rewriting. Brainstorm with them to help them develop their ideas no idea is a bad idea. Help them discover what they want to say. Remember to be a helper, not a critic. Allow time it takes a little time to come up with quality ideas. Let them play around with their concept, sleep on it if necessary. The less pressure and more relaxed they feel the more connected they will be towards it. Respond to your child's writing praise, praise, praise! Pick out the good points and expand on these. Avoid writing for your child it should always be the writing of the student. Build a climate of words at home when you are out and about talk about what they can see, hear, smell, touch. Try and get them to use different words to explain things. The basis of good writing is good talk. It is also important to let your child see you writing, if we never write at home, then the association of writing will be that it only occurs at school. Ask for feedback from your children, get them to help you when you write. Get your child to help you write for occasions for example writing up the grocery lists, birthday cards, taking down messages, writing notes to friends, helping plan trips by writing information, and preparing invitations to family get-togethers. Encouraging children to write more, their hand writing improves, their ideas start to develop and the fear of writing subsides. Learning Support Bulbin Aykiran

11 High School Commerce This term students are studying personal finance where we will explore the need for savings as well as develop an understanding about the variety of credit available and how best to manage money. According to an article in the Sydney Morning Herald, The OECD and ASIC have recognised that financial literacy needs to start early and have implemented financial education initiatives in both primary and secondary schools. But there's plenty that you can teach your kids at home, even if you aren't particularly confident about finance. Below are five basic tips you can use at home to assist our children learn sound financial management: 1. Buy smart - Look up the recommended retail price with your kids and compare it to the second-hand price and help them understand the "value" of shopping second-hand, especially for fad items. 2. Budget - planning a family outing to teach budgeting. This could easily be done with a weekend or holiday activity. Pick an outing and work out the essential and optional costs and things like whether you should buy lunch or bring it from home. 3. Save - A savings scheme over the summer holidays for the purchase of something new may be a good carrot to teach a long-term savings mindset. Every dollar they save over summer is matched by a dollar from you. 4. Earning an income - today many of us type at our computers, read s on our phones and go to "meetings" in an "office" (somewhere our kids have never been). The link between work and income is less clear. Make it tangible for kids; link some chores to a weekly income to help them understand that money has value and it needs to be earned by doing something. 5. Compound it; but not in reverse! - Setting up a child's bank account is a great way to teach compounding and show them the interest earned (by doing nothing) on their statement. But the most important lesson, particularly for teenagers, is how penal compounding can be when it works in reverse. Explain how credit cards work and how important it is to pay off your balance in full. Well Done! Amelia Phillips

12 High School English Term 4 has got off to a flying start with the Year 12s writing their Standard and Advanced English HSC Examinations on 16 and 17 October. Their learning culminated with a special "Yom Iyun" into the shofar. There were 3 sessions running simultaneously with students rotating between the sessions. In one area the boys made shofars and were tested on the practical laws of the shofar itself, in another session boys were tested on their ability to blow the shofar and in yet another session they were given insight into the inner meaning of the shofar. Boys who passed the practical tests were given "semicha" certificates by the school's rabbis whereby they are certified to blow the shofar or to be a "makri" in any shul on Rosh Hashana.
