1 Sunday, October 28 Twenty-third after Pentecost Our Vision As a progressive faith community, we live with open minds and hearts. We share the earth and endeavour to be stewards of the gifts God has given us. Following the teachings of Christ, we strive for a caring, safe and just society. We accept diversity as a gift from God to be welcomed and celebrated. We reach out with love and acceptance to live in right relations with individuals of all genders, gender identities, sexual orientations, ages, differing abilities and racial, ethnic, religious, economic or cultural backgrounds. All are welcome to participate fully in the life and work of the church. Our Gathering Community Come and join us Sunday mornings at 10 am. All are welcome This is the second Sunday of the Stewardship Campaign. Today, we will listen in on a conversation between a Five dollar bill and a Fifty dollar bill as they ride along on an offering plate. See you on Sunday for the skit: The Five and the Fifty Hugh We offer children s programming and a cozy area for those with infants. Following the service all are invited to gather in the basement hall for refreshments. Our Staff Team Minister Rev. MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN OUR COMMUNITY Food bank request for October Soups, Stews, and Chili A big thank you to Bev and K.C. for volunteering to be our Food Bank Associates and delivering our donations and cheques to the Food Bank. Any non-perishable foods are welcome. Food Bank donation envelopes are available on the side of the Food Bank box. Cheques should be made payable to Parkland Food Bank. Tax receipts will be issued

4 Coffee and Conversation Many of us enjoy the coffee and conversation after church. This is done with the assistance of volunteers who set up the coffee ahead of time and more volunteers who do the clean up. Volunteers are needed to keep this fellowship time going. Please consider sharing your time and talents with this ministry. Please check the HUB (Narthex volunteer board) where our roster sign-up is posted. Any questions our contact person is Margo McGann. Thank you for your support. Pastoral Care Taking Care of the Flock Our team of Lay Pastoral Visitors on the Pastoral Care Committee is always trying our best to keep track of the St. Andrew s flock, but sometimes we miss out on important news about members and friends. If you are aware of happenings that you think our pastoral care team could respond to, you can pass on the news (in confidence) to Rev. Hugh ( ) or one of the other members of the team: Sheila Christensen, Ruth Smith, Katilyn Matthews, Diane Skeels, Donna Haukedal, Aimee Trudeau, Ken Scott, Beth Hobbs, Margo McGann, Diana Rodwell and Kathleen Hoffmann. Prayer concerns may be shared in confidence with the Prayer Chain through Marie Smith.

6 MINUTE FOR MISSION Empowerment, Discernment, and Community! Our gifts for Mission 7 Service support events like the National Aboriginal Spiritual Gathering, where Indigenous communities can come together in solidarity and faith. For several decades, Indigenous communities of faith have gathered nationally to discuss matters of self-determination, spirituality, and their relationship with The United Church of Canada. These gatherings are a forum for listening to one another and discerning Creator s plan for mission and ministry. The 2017 Gathering took place July on the Treaty One Territory (Pinawa, Manitoba). A Sacred Fire burned throughout the Gathering, with four Fire Keepers guarding it at all hours of the day. Participants came from across Canada including youth, Elders, and ecumenical guests as well as from the Moderator s Dialogue on Reconciliation. The Very Rev. Dr. Stan McKay offered a Bible study, where participants reflected on biblical passages alongside the seven Sacred Teachings of Love, Respect, Courage, Honesty, Wisdom, Humility, and Truth. Dr. Shauneen Pete, an educator from Saskatchewan, spoke of her experiences working in academic institutions on issues of workplace equity, institutional racism, and cultural competency. Connections were made between these issues and the work of reconciliation. Dr. Pete praised events like the National Aboriginal Spiritual Gathering that dig deeper into the issues and empower participants. We are thankful for gatherings like the National Aboriginal Spiritual Gathering, and we celebrate that, through your gifts for Mission & Service, communities can look forward to the next Gathering in If Mission & Service giving is already a regular part of your life, thank you so much! If you have not given, please join me in making Mission & Service giving a regular part of your life of faith. Loving our neighbor is at the heart of our Mission & Service.

7 Study Session 6 weeks Oct 3-Nov 7, :30a.m. 11:30 a.m. in the Chapel Don t worry if you didn t make the 1 st session Please come out anytime First Light: Jesus and the Kingdom Featuring John Dominic Crossan and Marcus Borg Why did Jesus happen when he happened? Why the confluence of the Baptism movement of John and the Kingdom movement of Jesus? Why the tiny villages around the Lake? Why the confrontations in Jerusalem? Why then? Why there? Why were the titles of Caesar Augustus Divine, Son of God, God from God, Lord, Redeemer, Liberator, and Savior of the World taken from a Roman emperor on the Palatine hill and given to a Jewish peasant on the Palestine plain? Was it low lampoon or high treason? Either way, the Romans were not laughing. What were the priorities of Jesus' proclamation of the Kingdom? How was the status quo of Roman imperial theology subverted by this obscure Galilean whose message continues to indict empire today? First Light is a DVD study of the historical Jesus and the Kingdom of God with two of the world's leading Jesus scholars on location throughout the Galilee and Jerusalem. Holy Humour A new minister was visiting the homes of his congregation members. At one house it seemed obvious that someone was at home, but no answer came to his repeated knocks at the door. He took out a card and wrote Revelations 3:20 on the back of it and stuck it in the door. When the offering was processed the following Sunday, he found that his card had been returned. Added to it was this cryptic message: Genesis 3:10. Reaching for his Bible to check out the citation, he broke up in gales of laughter. Revelations 3:20 begins Behold, I stand at the door and knock. Genesis 3:10 reads I heard your voice in the garden and I was afraid for I was naked.
