3 The President s Column September 2017 We are going to Party Like it is 5778 L Shana Tova! As we start a New Year I look back at the good and not so good of last year was definitely a challenging year for our family, but without the bad we cannot appreciate the good. I repeatedly tell my children, It is not the challenges in life that should define you, but how you react and handle those challenges. It is an old saying When the going gets tough, the tough get going. I hope that we can all step up this year and handle our challenges head on and with the best intention of our family, community, and ourselves in mind. We are the Or Shalom community and I know there are people in this community that will stand with you if you need any assistance to get going. As part of the Yom Kippur tradition we ask friends, family, and members of the community to forgiveness for anything that we may have done this year to offend them. I was thinking about asking your forgiveness in this article and decided against it. Does it really count to send a mass apology? Would it count if I posted on Facebook a request for forgiveness? My answer to that is NO. I feel that my request for forgiveness needs to be more personal and direct. I need to look you in the eye and ask you to forgive me for it to count. With that said I hope to see you all at Yom Kippur services so I can ask you in person for your forgiveness and your support in making the coming year more successful than the last. As part of my speech on Rosh Hashanah I talked about how blessed we are to have such a wonderful facility in Berwyn. One of my goals this year is to use the facility to grow community involvement. This does not have to be just for the Jewish community. If the whole community benefits then the Jewish community will also benefit. A rising tide raises all ships. If you have a suggestion on how we can better utilize our resources please let me know. This could be anything from a standing bridge game, a dance class, or a yoga class. We have a facility with easy access that could also be used as a place for the senior members of your community to get together for activities during the day. We are never going to know if your idea works unless we try it. Financially we are in the best shape that we have been in for years. Could we use additional donations to support capital improvements such as the new roof Absolutely! A couple years ago we moved to a volunteer donation structure. Some people like it and some people do not like it. Whether you like it or not I would hope that you would support the synagogue. Without your membership and support we would be Out of Business. We are a small Shul and every member matters. You matter not just for your donations, but also for your involvement and participation. To be clear, the fair share for each member of the congregation is $2,500. This number is calculated based on our annual budget divided by the number of families. We realize this amount is a hardship for some people and we are very fortunate that we have some families that can pledge a higher amount. My hope for the coming year is that you will make Or Shalom a priority when making your charitable donations. Best Wishes for a Happy, Healthy, and Sweet New Year to you and your families! 4 Mitzvah of the Month Rabbi Jacob Rosner This is a partial reprint of the sermon i delivered on Rosh Hashanah According to a rabbinic teaching, our Jewish new year celebrates not the 1 st, but the 6 th day of creation, when God breathed the breath of life into Adam and Eve. The midrash tells us that on that very first Rosh Hashanah God breathed the breath of life that created the soul. On that same day God commanded them not to eat from the tree of life, on that same day they disobeyed, on that day God passed judgment on them. And finally, on that day in the twelfth hour, God forgave their trespass. the forbidden fruit had not made Adam and Eve all-knowing, for they tried to hide from God among the trees in the garden. But the lord called unto them, and asked ayeka Where are you (art thou?) Strange! There was only. Eden -- and in Eden there was only a little garden and an omnipresent God. Can anyone hide from God? Did God need to ask -- where art thou? Perhaps the answer is that this 1 st question from God is asked of all of us across the generations. 0n this day Rosh Hashanah day God asks each of us ayeka where are you? it is Rosh Hashanah, and we are all Adam and Eve, all standing naked before our creator, we cannot hide, our souls are open books. Each of us has our book of life opened to God And it is not just individuals who are judged On this Rosh Hashanah, God asks of our people as a whole "where art thou? Where are my chosen ones? Do they fulfill the sacred mission i have entrusted to them? Are they indeed a nation of priests and a holy people?" and we look to our liturgy and our torah to determine the answer to that question. There are so many different ways for each of us to answer. We can answer by being more involved as Jews. We can say, its Shabbos and here I am sitting at my Shabbos table, our candles lit, our blessings made. Do you want an example of the answer to our question? Look to the people in the path of the recent storms that slammed into Florida and the Caribbean, and now Puerto Rico. Look to those who risked their lives to dig people out of the rubble in Mexico.. They were answering the question ayeka?. Look to the citizens who took out their boats and patrolled the flooded streets looking for people to save.. Look to the millions who contributed to charities to help those in need, they too, were answering God s question HORIZONS 4 October 2017 Tishrei, 5778 Heshvan, 5778
5 Rabbi Jacob Rosner (continued) On this Rosh Hashanah, in this house of prayer, God calls us all to reaffirm our faith. I seek you each day, God tells us. I am ready to comfort you, to heal you, to love you. I am lonely for you where art thou and finally on Rosh Hashanah, we recognize that the question posed first to Adam, is posed to each of us by those we love. ayeka? Are we there for our families, are we truly available for our children? Do we respond with hineni here I am, when they ask ayeka Where are you mom? Where are you dad?. I'm growing up -- notice me I'm growing up -- give me freedom I'm growing up -- I need guidance, I need you to say yes to me, I need you to say no to me, I need you to notice me to love me. To be there for me. all this In one simple question Is the answer to God's first call. The question ayeka Where are you? are you there for Israel, as always Israel needs the support of every Jew. She needs our visits,, our tzedaka and our moral support. And Israel needs our responses to the anti Semites In universities throughout out the land that single out not Venezuela or Russia or China as violators of human rights, but only Israel And finally, are you there for our little synagogue? We are the little shul that can. Our doors are open to all. But If you are here today to pray with us, I urge you to help support us as well. If you can support us financially trust me we are a shul In need literally to keep the roof over our heads. But there are other ways as well. From polishing silver to providing Shabbos lunches to helping with minyon.we need your support Today I ask you with great love ayeka where are you throughout the year. We need you. We struggle for a minyon. Ayeka Are you there for God, for your loved ones, for your friends. will determine the meaning of this new year. may we all respond with amen And may we all respond with heneni here I am! The answer to these questions HORIZONS 5 October 2017 Tishrei, 5778 Heshvan, 5778
6 From the Education Director Ellen Glassman Religious School News Reciting the first line of the Sh ma, we are instructed, V shinantem l vanekha and you shall teach your children well. As educators, we often ask ourselves, how do we measure teaching our students well? When assessing knowledge acquisition with respect to subjects like math, foreign language, science and history, aptitude and achievement, tests can be given. Teaching Hebrew, we can listen for reading fluency and accuracy, but when it comes to teaching Jewish values, it s harder to measure Menschlichkeit. One isn t born a mensch; becoming a mensch takes practice! In addition to learning Hebrew, prayer, Torah, Bible, holidays, customs and Israel, our aim in religious school is to provide our students with opportunities to develop their Jewish pride, character, empathy and heart. Hebrew can be reinforced by reading from the Siddur, Bible stories can be read aloud and creative projects can be designed to bring their importance to life, but doing good deeds, fostering kindness and concern for others and honoring the commandments are often best experienced as opposed to learned solely from a textbook or explanation in the classroom. Experiential learning opportunities are woven throughout our curriculum. We encourage students to think Jewish, feel Jewish and do Jewish. This past week, students from our Zayin/7th grade and Hebrew High/Confirmation classes went to the Gladwyne Jewish Memorial Cemetery (formerly known as Har Hasetim Cemetery) to perform a double Mitzvah taking part in a Genizah ceremony and performing the Mitzvah of Halvayat HaMeit -remembering and attending to the dead. Genizah means hidden or reserved. HORIZONS 6 October 2017 Tishrei, 5778 Heshvan, 5778
7 Religious School News continued Gathering old prayerbooks, damaged Torah scrolls, Haggadot and printed material containing G-ds name as well as ritual items like worn Tallitot and Tefillin, we boxed and loaded everything in a minivan and students and parents headed by bus to the cemetery. Carrying the heavy boxes down unpaved pathways and placing them lovingly into the soil in the sacred space they designated for us, students and parents covered the books and artifacts in dirt with reverence. Afterwards, we engaged in prayer and song, reinforcing the sacredness of the act performed. In addition, we cleared overgrown ground cover from many of the cradle graves and hope we can return to continue our efforts. Every headstone tells a story and provides a kaleidoscope for us to remember the lives of the deceased in our Jewish community. Once an abandoned ceremony, The Friends Of The Gladwyne Jewish Memorial Cemetery are determined to honor the gravesites by cleaning, restoring, documenting and creating a beautiful and historical memorial and nature preserve. We are grateful to their leaders Neil Sukonik and Rachael Griffith for their support, guidance and sweat in helping us experience this meaningful Mitzvah. Special thanks are sent Scott Greenberg and Gina Arlen and teacher Britt Linn for lifting, hauling, schlepping, helping and cheering on our students every step of the way. Thanks to everyone involved, our students experienced these Mitzvot first hand something we couldn t explain with the same understanding if we taught about the Genizah and Kavod HaMeit in the classroom.
