They may have such a good time that they decide to become members themselves. According to a recent survey by the Jewish Federation, there are many, many unaffiliated Jews in Chester county. We d love to contact them, but don t know who they are. You can help. Todah rabah! 3 From your newsletter editors Do we have your correct address? If you have not been receiving the weekly update, we probably don t have a correct address. Please the office with your correct address Do we have a complete list of your Yahrzeits? We send out a reminder letter each month. If you don t get one, we don t have your Yahrzeit records up to date. the office with the name, relationship to member, and civil date including year and we will add it to our records. Dear Congregants, While we usually have a minyan during Sabbath services, there are times we miss. It is especially disheartening when we miss and someone is here to say kaddish. If you intend to celebrate a Yahrzeit, please inform Rabbi Jacob and he will make telephone calls to ensure there. It would also be helpful if you could bring members of your family or friends. Thank you Rabbi Jacob The President s Column President s Message January 2017 Happy New Year (that other new year). When you read this the holidays will be over, you are back at work, the kids are back in school and the winter will be settling in. While you re fighting life s, everyday battles remember that the warmest place in town is Congregation Or Shalom. Come join us for services or for any of our events published in this Horizons. Come be a part of this wonderful Jewish Community. It is so important now as always. The latest UN resolution condemning Israel on December 23 was just one of twenty condemnations of Israel passed by the UN in Conversely there were only four others passed for the rest of the world, one each for Syria, Russia, Iran and North Korea. Seriously, could the need for a united Jewish community be any clearer? Please also remember our annual fund raiser, the Or Shalom Spring Art Auction on March 26, We are planning a fun and exciting evening. Bring your family and friends. Also, please volunteer to join the committee or help us the day of the event. You can contact Betsy Cohen or Na ama Yarden for details. HORIZONS 3 January 2017 Tevet,5777 Sh vat, 5777
4 What s in a name Mitzvah of the Month Rabbi Jacob Rosner This past Friday night, there was a discussion during the oneg about Hebrew/Jewish names. Many non-orthodox synagogues engage Israeli teachers for their schools. Although these teachers are, for the most part, dedicated o thei task, many of them suffer from one particular prejudice I would like to write about. On the 1st day of class, the teacher is likely to ask each child her Hebrew name, too often the child doesn t know his/name and teacher suggests asking mom and dad as homework. Assuming mom or dad remember (unfortunately not always the case), the child will return to class with this new found knowledge which will usually then be recorded by the teacher. But not always. Sometimes the child will report that his name is Heschel or her name is Feigel(Yiddish names meaning deer and bird). The teacher will inform the child that those are not proper Hebrew names and that from now on their Hebrew names are Tzvi and Tziporah (the Hebrew equivalent). What hutzpah!!! One s name is holy! According to tradition, in some ways our names define who we are. No one has the right to steal our names, not even well meaning Hebrew School teachers. Often we are named after a beloved relative whose name was NOT Tzvi, but Heschel. we name our child after deceased family as a prayer of sorts. We hope our child will have some of the his/her attributes. And we hope that he/she will be a melits yosher (righteous intercessor) for us with God. So you Heschels and Zissels and Goldas and Blumas whose names were stolen, reclaim them!! come to shul on a Shabbat morning and tell Murray you want an Aliyah. And when he call you to the Torah by the name on his card when he calls you up as Dov, tell him, my name is not dove, it s Berel HORIZONS 4 January 2017 Tevet,5777 Sh vat, 5777
5 From the Education Director Na ama Yarden How is our new Or Tamid program working out? Starting a new year is a good time to report to the community about a few changes we did this year. As you remember on September 2016, we joined our Sunday Religious School program with Congregation Beth El Ner Tamid. Our initiative derived from the small numbers of students that we have in each class and the benefit that our students will gain from studying in bigger classes and meeting more Jewish friends of their age group. We just finished the first round of Sundays in both synagogues. I am happy to tell you that four months into this new joint initiative, it seems that everyone is happy. The students have made new friends and they are excited to meet them every week. The spirit is high and very positive. The new friendships added a lot to the students Religious School experience. Our wonderful staff has joined forces, got to know each other and work collaboratively on programs. CBENT s teachers were very satisfied with the space Or Shalom offered to them and the transitions back and forth went very smoothly. The parents seemed to get used to the new setting and are doing well with the extra 12 minutes travel time. Our new curriculum, that we wrote this summer reflects the similarities between both synagogues and how we view Jewish Education. It is beneficial to see what we gained by joining programs together. Here are some things we added to our already reach program: We now have a Chazzan on staff to work with our students. We added on a few events that are CBENT s tradition. The snack is being organized differently. Our students have a High School program that belongs to the school. On the other hand, CBENT gained Israeli dancing and music. They are being exposed to our Kachol Lavan Israelis program and their families, they are also very happy to add a few Shabbat schools to the calendar. In the coming weeks you will get an with a survey to ask for your opinion regarding this new Or Tamid program. We are asking that you answer it asap. It is only a few short questions that can greatly help us determining our decision for next year. Although only four months have passed since we started Or Tamid, we can feel the wonderful vibe that is going around every Sunday, we can see the smiling faces of the students and the new friendships that grow between the communities. It is refreshing and encouraging for us to come together so successfully. HORIZONS 5 January 2017 Tevet,5777 Sh vat, 5777
