3 From your newsletter editors Do we have your correct address? If you have not been receiving the weekly update, we probably don t have a correct address. Please the office with your correct address Do we have a complete list of your Yahrzeits? We send out a reminder letter each month. If you don t get one, we don t have your Yahrzeit records up to date. the office with the name, relationship to member, and civil date including year and we will add it to our records. This newsletter is for all communicate, to share thoughts, to tell simchas, to speak of our losses, our joys, and to say did you know? Let us know! us: Office@orshalom.com Followership The President s Column Stuart Lurie We so often hear of the importance of leadership, and we are supposed to raise our children to be good leaders. But let s face it. Not everyone can be a good leader and that s okay. We need good followers too. Right now we re celebrating the holiday of Passover. To be sure, the Exodus from Egypt is the single most defining moment in the Jewish Experience. Moses was a good leader, an exceptional leader. But did he do it alone? No. He needed followers. Our synagogue needs followers too. For every person who steps up to be a leader of a committee or to organize an event, we need multiple followers to carry out that vision. This is true in all aspects of synagogue life, ranging from helping out in the kitchen, to being #10 at a minyan, or shlepping heavy things for a Hebrew School event. So this time, for once, I m not going to ask you to be a leader. But I am going to ask you to be a follower. There s plenty of rewarding work to be done, and our leaders cannot do it alone. Let s start small. No. 1 Attend our Annual Congregational Meeting No. 2 Attend services twice a month during the summer No. 3 Consider a committee to join for the fall Thanks, and Chag Sameach! 4 Mitzvah of the Month Rabbi Jacob Rosner HORIZONS 4 May 2016 Nisan, 5776 Iyar,5776

5 From the Education Director Na ama Yarden In the last few months a committee of members from Congregation Beth El Ner Tamid (CBENT) and Congregation Or Shalom met to discuss the option of joining our school programs next year. The process is very long and requires sharing thoughts, discussing details and making decisions. We are finding many points of agreements and overall the two synagogues have a lot of similarities in our educational goals and curriculum, which makes an operation like this much easier. Here are some more information for you regarding this change. Please feel free to address any questions you have to our committee: Stuart, Rabbi Jacob, Melissa and Na ama. Goal/Mission: By having larger classes, we are expanding the Jewish community our students are a part of, which will lead to an improvement of the quality of the educational process, while at the same time maintaining our congregational identity. Where appropriate, this collaborative partnership will identify and take advantage of potential cost savings and economies of scale. Guiding Principles: Our collaborative program will develop A love for G-d, Torah, Mitzvot, and Israel A sense of belonging as an individual, in the home, in the synagogue, in the greater Jewish community, and in Israel The tools for wrestling with the challenges of Jewish life Blending of Schools: Separate weekday program (Tuesday for OS and Wednesday for CBENT) with blended Sunday program on a rotating basis. The initial partnership period will be the school year, with the hope of continuing it indefinitely into the future. Location: Equitable split of location based on a model of 50/50, i.e., half the time at OS and half the time at CBENT. This split can be accomplished any number of ways, i.e., Sunday classes, Shabbat school, special events. Rotation: The program will rotate generally between OS and CBENT in two-month blocks, with some exceptions for special events. As we continue to meet, we take in consideration all the special events that we love having at Or Shalom and the same for CBENT. We are aware that for most people this change will make the travel time to school longer. However, the benefit for our students is clear and altogether we are very excited for this opportunity. Again, If you have any questions, ideas, or thoughts you would like to share with us you are welcome to reach out to the committee members. HORIZONS 5 May 2016 Nisan, 5776 Iyar,5776

16 JEWISH ADOPTION AND FAMILY CARE OPTIONS Nothing is more tragic than a family torn apart. When a child is removed from their family, they leave behind what they have known and take with them their fears, anger, hurt and insecurities. We believe every child deserves a safe and loving home.
