3 From your newsletter editors Do we have your correct address? If you have not been receiving the weekly update, we probably don t have a correct address. Please the office with your correct address Do we have a complete list of your Yahrzeits? We send out a reminder letter each month. If you don t get one, we don t have your Yahrzeit records up to date. the office with the name, relationship to member, and civil date including year and we will add it to our records. Dear Congregants, While we usually have a minyan during Sabbath services, there are times we miss. It is especially disheartening when we miss and someone is here to say kaddish. If you intend to celebrate a Yahrzeit, please inform Rabbi Jacob and he will make telephone calls to ensure there. It would also be helpful if you could bring members of your family or friends. Thank you Rabbi Jacob The President s Column Lots of Thanks Thank you to everyone that attended High Holiday services this year. It was great to see everyone and share in the good feelings and hopefulness that the New Year services bring. Having a full shul clearly shows that Congregation Or Shalom is a strong community. This is gratifying to all of the dedicated staff and volunteers that make Or Shalom work, not only on holidays but all year around. There are so many people to thank for making the synagogue and the services so warm and welcoming that it would take up too much space but I particularly want to thank Rabbi Rosner, Cantor Romirowsky and our high holiday chairmen, Murray Klug and Alan Daroff. Now that we are moving into November I am always looking for the next reason to get the family together for celebration. My favorite holiday of any kind is Thanksgiving. Although the ultimate American holiday, I choose to co-opt it as Jewish holiday. After all there is something very Jewish about thanking G-d for all that life in America has given us. As a child of Holocaust survivors I often think of the horrors both my parents endured including witnessing the murder of several family members. I marvel at my luck to have been born in America and being given such a great life. I constantly hear the complaints of how difficult life is; the economy is lousy, the politicians are corrupt and stupid and the nation is divided as never before. But how great is it to be fighting to improve and preserve the greatest nation on earth? Just look around at the rest of the world. There is a lot to be thankful for. That leads me to other big event in November, the presidential election. Regardless of whether you are voting for or against a candidate, the best thing we can do to preserve our democratic way of life is to exercise the precious right to vote. Get to the polls on Tuesday, November 8 th. Finally, I want to hear from you. Please write me at president@orshalom.com with any ideas on how to make Or Shalom better or how to get involved in the many activities and events going on at the synagogue. 4 From the Education Director Na ama Yarden Some interesting facts about the Jewish world An article, that I read recently, in an Israeli newspaper (ynet.com, 10/2/16, by Tali Farkash), described the coming crisis of the Jewish world. Experts in this area predict that in 300 years there will be no more Jews in North America. Right now, 58% of American Jews are already marring non-jews. Just before WWII, there were 16.5 million Jews in the world. After the Shoah only 11 million were left. Today, the numbers grew back to almost 14.5 million Jews, 83% of them live in only two places: Israel and the USA. The first Jews immigrated to America in 1654, when they fled from Brazil, which was under the Portuguese ruling, and settled down in New York. In the 19 th century many more Jews came to the USA to flee from the anti-semitism in Europe. In the process of finding a home in the new country, they felt the need to blend in the local society and one of the outcomes was that they started to marry non-jews. Before 1970 the percentage of blended families was 17%. Today it is up to 58% and in Canada, even 63%. The good news, says Professor Gur Elroi, (Haifa U. Head of the Roderman institute), is that lately, the numbers have stopped growing. Although, these numbers don t look good, Professor Elroi sees the reality in a different light. 35% of Jews in America are Reform. 18% are conservative and 10% are Orthodox. 30% are unaffiliated. One important question is how are the children of blended families are being raised and educated. He adds that 1/3 of the children in blended homes are being brought up as active Jews (Hebrew School, Jewish Camps, celebrate Jewish Holiday) the biggest threat are these 20-30% of families, that have no connection to Judaism. As a Jewish Educator, I believe that this is the area that we should act upon. Jews, who care about their people and worry for the future of their nation, should do something about it. I assume that we all know people who are Jewish but don t belong to a synagogue or don t celebrate any holiday. Although religion is a personal and private decision, often the reason why a person got detached from his heritage is reversible. Let s all take this as a personal goal for this year. Let s find someone around us: a family, neighbor, friend, colleague and add our small (actually Big) token to help preserve our Jewish nation alive for more than 300 years. Let s invite them to Or Shalom for a visit on one of the special events we have. No pushing, just suggesting. Here is one story about my own family. I have a distance family originally from NYC. The mom was Jewish and she married an Indian guy. They had a Jewish home, but when she, unfortunately, died in a very young age, the father did not know what to do about his kids Jewish heritage and with the year the three children got drafted into a no religion zone. Both daughters married non-jewish guys. We, as their family members, always kept in touch with them. For their wedding we gave them a Pesach plate, knowing that we need to be their Jewish link. When one daughter moved to NJ, we made a point of inviting them to our home or coming to theirs and celebrate the main Jewish holidays. A few years ago she gave me a big hug and told me that without our determination they would have stopped celebrating these holidays and stayed connected with Judaism. In the last few years the kids went to a Jewish last few years the kids went to a Jewish pre-school and now they are going to Hebrew school. However, every year, when I go to visit them on Rosh Hashanah, I still bring apples, honey, round challahs, pomegranate, a Jewish book and a Shofar (the whole Megilah) and I talk to them about the holiday. They need someone to support their Jewish connection and I am happy to do it. pre-school and now they are going to Hebrew school.
