2 2 3 Rabbi s message Among the traditions for the month of Elul, the month of preparation for the High Holy Days, is the study of Musar literature. Musar is primarily focused on practical discipline, unlike Chasidut, which focuses more on the spiritual. I recently came across a quote from the renowned Sefer Chovot HaLevavot (Duties of the Heart) by Rabbi Bahya ibn Paquda of Spain that I thought was a good starting point for the month of Elul. High Holiday Schedule 2018 Selichot Services Sat. Sept 1 Details to follow Erev Rosh Hashana Sun. Sept 9 6:30 PM Rosh Hashana (1st day) Mon. Sept 10 8:30 AM One of the righteous said to his disciples: If you had no sin, I should be afraid of that in you which is greater than sin, pride. For pride, which is more serious than sin is to be found in the man who thinks he has not sinned. Elul is a time for honest self-examination, which is hard. On the one hand we have our pride which tells us that we have nothing to do teshuva for, on the other hand our shame will tell us that we are so flawed that it is hopeless to be a good Jew. Tashlich Rosh Hashana (2nd day) Kol Nidrei Mon. Sept 10 Immediately a er services Mon. Sept 10 6:30 PM Tues. Sept 11 8:30 AM Tues. Sept 18 6:30 PM SHARP Teshuva is a process and it starts with honesty. We are not expected to be perfect coming into Rosh Hashanah. As it says in Malachi 3:7: From the days of your fathers ye have turned aside from Mine ordinances, and have not kept them. Return unto Me, and I will return unto you, Saith the LORD of hosts. But ye say: Wherein shall we return? We don t need to do it all ourselves. The prophet Malachi reminds us that when we do our best to do the right thing, God will return to us. May you be inscribed in the book of health and success. Shana Tova! Rabbi Sam Yom Kippur & Yizkor Wed. Sept 19 8:30 AM Erev Succoth Sun. Sept 23 6:30 PM Succoth Mon. Sept 24 9:15 AM Mon. 3 Co-Presidents message Shana Tovah! We are looking forward to the New Year 5779, bringing new beginnings and exci ng future events to CBJ. New Year s gree ng cards have been prepared and mailed under the direc on of chairman Corey and Sima Stalerman, with help from members of the Ways and Means commi ee. Corey is also responsible for organizing and prin ng of the yearly Yiskor Remembrance Books, which are in use throughout the year during the specific holidays which require Yiskor services. All members will be receiving our annual calendar, ably prepared by Ritual Chairperson Joyce Lieb, with the assistance of her talented commi ee members Lori Wisseman, Margie MonteLeon and Nicole Weinstein. Our High Holiday cket sales, sea ng plan and delega on of honors during services are all under the capable direc on of the very busy Joyce Lieb. Yasher Koach, Joyce! We are thrilled to announce the hiring of our new member, Rob Schweitzer, as principal of our Hebrew School. Rob has extensive experience in Special Educa on, in Jewish Educa on, and in music educa on, as well as other strengths, and we welcome him and his wife Andrea into our CBJ community. Rob has many ideas for improving the educa on of our Hebrew School students and we look forward to a successful year under his leadership. Hebrew School Open House and Registra on will be held in our Sukkah from 10 to 12 on Sunday, September 23rd. The 4 children will be engaged in fun ac vi es and cra s to help decorate the Sukkah. They will also have the opportunity to learn the meaning of the Holiday, the Lulav and the Etrog, and will enjoy holiday snacks. Children and their families will be warmly welcomed. Men s Club, under the seemingly eternal (and we are eternally grateful) leadership of Joel Brimmer, has plans for hos ng a Steak and Scotch barbecue in the Sukkah on September 26th and then a morning bagel breakfast talk about Jewish Heritage and sports on October 14th. Our annual Rummage Sale will be held on November 4th, 5th, and 6th, so begin to collect the merchandise you plan to donate. Please be prepared to help set up, sell and clean up, spending as much me as you have available to give. Mark your calendars on November 11th for a very special Cantors Concert starring Cantor Edry, Cantor Avi Albrecht and friends in commemora on of Israel s 70th anniversary. This will be a late a ernoon affair with music and regional cuisine. Cantor Edry expects this to be a strong fund raiser in lieu of a Dinner Dance this year, so please help his expecta ons come true. As you can see, CBJ has many devoted and hard working people who are helping to make the coming year busy, exci ng, and interes ng. We hope we can count on many more of you to make us a bigger, stronger congrega on. May we all have a happy, healthy and sweet year ahead Ruth Greenwald and Arlene Rachman 5

4 6 7 Hebrew School Principal message And the youth shall see visions and our hopes shall rise up to the sky We must live for today, we must build for tomorrow, Give us time, give us strength, give us life. ~Debbie Friedman, And the Youth Shall See Visions I am very honored and delighted to introduce myself as your new principal of Congregation Bnai Jeshurun Hebrew School. I look forward to getting to know each and every one of you--our students, our parents, our f amilies, our community! A little bit about myself. This is my 35 th year in education, working as an educator, staff developer, compliance monitor, department supervisor and school administrator. Additionally, I have served as a Jewish music leader for over 20 years in a variety of synagogues and day camps. So, I am especially enthusiastic to be able to draw on all of my experiences in order to bring creativity, excitement and vitality to CBJ Hebrew School. My goals include providing a Jewish environment where our students develop a lifelong love of Jewish learning, a special connection to our Jewish heritage, values and traditions, and a powerful sense of belonging to the Jewish people. I believe our students need to feel comfortable in a synagogue, know how to lead services, understand the meaning of our beautiful prayers, how we celebrate Shabbat and our holidays, to read and write Hebrew fluently and all of the crucial elements that make us proud to be Jews. I look forward to getting to know you and your children and to an incredible year ahead of learning and growing! All the Best, Robert Schweitzer Men s Club message Dear B nai Jeshurun Family, I hope everyone had an exci ng and res ul summer. The Men s Club wishes all congregants a healthy and meaningful New Year. Men s club members will meet, greet and usher you and your family as you enter our temple. The Men s club has some exci ng events planned as we begin the New Year. On Wednesday, September 26th we will have our first event of the year, our Scotch and Steak in the Sukkah at 7 PM.
