1 בס ד 5:44 pm October 24, פרשת נח Tishrei 5775 Volume 36, Issue 5 begins with a description of the corrupt society that was ultimately destroyed by the flood. The sin of theft is singled out as פרשת נח the primary cause of the world's destruction. The sin of theft stems from a basic flaw in our relationships with one another. Individuals can be giving, seeking out opportunities to perform acts of ;חסד conversely, one can be become dependent on others, seeking out opportunities to take. Those who are accustomed to taking, may eventually become the ultimate takers, "thieves", whose need to take knows no bounds. The ultimate protection against sinking to the level of actual robbery is to perfect the attribute of "giving" as opposed to "taking". The generation of Noach had sunk to the depths of corruption. The source of all evil engulfing the society in which Noach found himself was the inability to give to others. One who takes, but does not give becomes so self-centered that the needs of others are completely excluded. Hashem singles out Noach to survive the flood and begin civilization again. The most critical lesson Noach and his children must learn and impart to all future generations is the significance of giving to others. It is for this reason that Hashem devised a plan in which the animal world would be saved in the.תיבה Noach and his family would be responsible for caring for all of the animals for almost an entire year. Hashem could have saved the animals through many means, yet this method was chosen in order to grant Noach the opportunity to perfect the trait of giving, preparing him to instill this most critical trait in his descendants. The lesson of giving would be transmitted through the descendants of Shem, and ultimately be exemplified in the personality of the "the man of giving", Avraham Avinu. May we follow in the path that was paved for us by our ancestors and continue to give to those around us, and impart this lesson to our future generations as well. The banot of the middle school had a very memorable and moving event on October 1. They were privileged to attend the Mermelstein family dedication of the Alisa M. Flatow wing. The special evening began in the beit midrash where Rabbi Price introduced the guest speaker, Mr. Steven Flatow, father of Alisa.הי"ד Mr. Flatow spoke about Alisa's beautiful midot and shared some inspiring stories. The girls were most impressed when they heard about how Alisa chose her friends. It was important for her to have friends who were less religious than she, so that she could teach them, as well as friends who were more religious, so that she could learn from them. At the conclusion of the speech, the family members, teachers, administrators, and middle school girls all went upstairs to their wing for the next part of the program. Rabbi Goldstein read the plaque in Alisa's memory and the breathtakingly beautiful mural was unveiled. The mural, created by the very talented Mrs. Leah Cham-. "בזכות נשים ish, is entitled It depicts scenes צדקניות " which incorporate righteous role models throughout the span of Jewish history, and shows them being involved in specific activities that reflect the way Alisa lived her short, yet very meaningful life. Everyone then enjoyed a delicious dinner, catered most generously by Mr. Kenny Yager of Five Star Caterers. The evening concluded with a fun craft project, in which each student created her own, personalized leaf which will amos long, 50 amos wide, & 30 amos high. 5. a) Top floor -the people; b) middle floor- the animals; c) bottom floor-garbage..תשובה 6. 3 Every המועד סוכות,חול RYNJ celebrates with a שמחת בית השואבה for the middle school boys. This year the שמחת בית השואבה was hosted by Rabbi Rothwachs at Congregation Beth Aaron. There was tasty food, upbeat dancing, great music, and most importantly, the Schnitzel Guys! The tasty food, consisting of mouth-watering mini hot dogs, scrumptious sesame noodles and crunchy cookies, served by Mrs. Pudell, Mrs. Alter and Mrs. Fisher. It was very nice to see many of the RYNJ Rabbis take time off from vacation to enjoy a spectacular evening with their students. Everyone had an amazing time and the multitalented Schnitzel Guys just made it all the more fun. There was also a surprise singer at the end. All the boys were dancing, singing and eating like there was no tomorrow. It was truly a happy time, thereby fulfilling the מצוה of בחגך.ושמחת Ezra Seplowitz, 7B1 Thank you to the following families who helped with this year s Rotblats, The Teitelbaums, The Fishers, The :שמחת בית השואבה and The Alters. 5 Can a person be TOO calm? Noach, The Michitza Debate, and the M.O.M. of October In his commentary on the opening pasuk of this week s parsha, Rashi cites the famous debate about the status of Noach. Specifically, the phrase Noach i sh tzaddik can be interpreted positively (i.e., if he was able to be a tzaddik in his generation, he would have surely been an even greater tzaddik in a more righteous generation) or critically (i.e., he was only a tzaddik compared to the wicked people of his generation, but would not have been called a tzaddik in a more righteous generation). In this week s haftorah, a phrase in Yeshayahu Ha Navi s nevuah seems to take a side in this debate. The pasuk states (54, 9): For like the waters of Noach shall this be to me: As I have sworn never again to pass the waters of Noach over the earth. The fact that the pasuk ascribes blame for the mabul s flood waters to Noach (calling the mabul the waters of Noach ) seems to support the view of the meforshim who take a more sanguine view of Noach s status. Parsha and Parenting Dr. Jonathan Frohlich Regardless of his level of righteousness, Noach certainly was not wicked. So, how could he have been culpable for the mabul? Some meforshim point out that perhaps Noach was too lax in accepting the divine decree of the impending flood, and did not do enough to prevent it. Noach should have taken the initiative to reach out to others and create a teshuva movement, in order to save their lives and prevent the flood. (This can be contrasted with the initiatives Avraham attempted to save the people of Sedom). But why DIDN T Noach take a more active approach to save his generation from the mabul? Rabbi Daniel Feldman, in his sefer From Within The Tent: The Haftarot, points out an interesting detail in Noach s personality that may explain this. Apparently, some meforshim explain that the reason that Noach was saved, and the reason that he found favor in the eyes of Hashem, was because of the attribute that was most closely associated with his name Noach a sense of calm and equanimity. Noach s calmness, however, had a positive and a negative aspect. On the positive side, he was able to avoid anger, and associated bad traits which can lead one to sin. On the negative side, however, too much calmness can engender a laisse faire attitude. Perhaps this general laisse faire trait fostered a sense of blindness and detachment from his society around him. Moreover, even if he wanted to, and tried to intervene, his lack of genuine emotional investment in the society around him might have muted his words, and rendered his kiruv program ineffective. Perhaps on a more powerful level, Rabbi Feldman points out that Noach s lack of assertive confidence might not have been limited to his interactions with the society around him, but also reflective of his low self confidence about himself. If one is not confident in his or her own ability to be successful and impact the world, one may not even try. This approach to the story of Noach shows us the cost of having a laisse faire attitude about the society around us, and about reaching out to others. The negative consequences of not reaching out to others, is also highlighted in the following unfortunate, but true story told by Rabbi Frand. Apparently, a certain Rabbi was offered a shul position, but would only accept it if the congregation agreed to put up a mechitza. Although the overwhelming majority of the community was in favor, the president of the shul was strongly opposed, and would not compromise at all. Eventually, the president explained his reason to the Rabbi. He said that I have been living near an orthodox Jew for a decade. While this neighbor would build a succah and celebrate Succos with his family every year, he never once invited me. Therefore, I can t allow my shul to become orthodox. Apparently, the innocent lack of reaching out by this neighbor had a ripple effect that was now threatening the religious identity and practice of the entire community. Obviously, we want to raise our children to reach out to others, and make them feel valued. In order to encourage this trait, the Middah of the Month of October is Reach Out To Others. While there is a cost (effort, time, etc ) to encouraging our children to reach out of their social comfort zone, the stories above highlight the point that not reaching out has a cost as well. In that spirit, we have conducted the first M.O.M. raffle of the year, and the following children are the winners: Yael Horowitz, Yehuda Pfeiffer, Mendel Stanislavsky, Elan Whitehead, Doniel Kroopnick, Gidon Lefkowitz, Yaakov Silverman, and the entire class of 2G3. We are looking forward to hearing your stories of how your children are making extra efforts to reach out to others, and hope to see their names in the next raffle. Shabbat Shalom. This Shabbos, פרשת נח,שבת is being observed around the world as The Shabbos Project. The goal is to unite and inspire as many Jewish people as possible to be aware of the beauty and holiness of Shabbos. Our communities have various wonderful programming planned for this fantastic Shabbos and I am sure it will be an unforgettable experience. RYNJ has chosen to do two special projects with the younger grades to honor this Shabbos as well. There is a beautiful tzedakah box set up in the main concourse on the second floor of the school building. Each class will travel to the concourse to deposit their tzedakah in this wonderful box. All tzedakah contributed to this special box will be donated to Tomchei Shabbos. We have also inspired our younger students, with permission of their parents, to call a friend, relative or neighbor and wish them good Shabbos! This will engender achdus and positive and joyous feelings!שבת שלום towards Shabbos!
