DVAR TORAH Rabbi Yechiel Fishbain LS Rebbe In this week's parsha the Torah tells us (Pasuk 6 of perek 30) that HaShem will help us reach a level of love for HaShem by removing ומ ל) ; lit. circumcising) the contaminating aspects of ourselves that repel spirituality. The Ramban here notes that this is the source for the important concept (Gemara Shabbos, 104a), One who seeks to purify himself, they will purify him. In other words, if we make a genuine effort and really want to be pure people who serve HaShem, then HaShem will see to it that we reach such heights and achieve our spiritual goals. As the Midrash on ש יר ה ש יר ים (5:2) states, HaShem says, Open for Me a hole the size of a needle, and I will open for you a breach big enough for wagons to go through. 2 LETTER FROM RABBI DANIEL PRICE Head of School Dear RYNJ Family, We are thrilled to welcome your children back for what promises to be בע"ה a very positive, meaningful and exciting school year. Our teachers and administrators have welcomed your children back to the Yeshiva with open arms and everyone is ready to reach new levels of achievement. HaRav Mordechai Willig שליטא in his article, "Jewish Education, Family and Community" for TorahWeb's publication "Chinuch: Contemporary & Timeless", writes about the valuable connection between chinuch and the community. The Torah relates that before Yaakov Avinu went down to Mitzrayim with his family he sent Yehuda ahead. 46:28) And he [Yaakov] sent Yehuda ahead of him to Yosef to prepare (Bereishis ו א ת-י ה וד ה ש ל ח ל פ נ יו, א ל-י וס ף, ל ה ור ת Rashi quotes the midrash (Bereishis Rabbah 95:3), which interprets the word להורות as "to teach." Yehuda was sent to establish a place מורה בו דברי תורה ושיהיו השבטים לומדים בו,שיהא where Yaakov would teach Torah and where the,שבטים his offspring, would learn. HaRav Willig explained: "The highest priority for the success and preservation of the Jewish family and community is having places for Torah teaching and learning. When the first Jewish family immigrated to Egypt, our patriarch Yaakov viewed such a place as a prerequisite for settling in their new country. The establishment of a place of Torah learning had to precede their arrival." Our priority in building a vibrant Jewish community must begin with Torah education situated as its cornerstone. This year, we as a Yeshiva have embraced the theme of "You, Me and Community." Throughout the year we will be guiding our children through what it means to be part of a "community" and how the pillars of the world: community. are enhanced by the תורה,עבודה, וגמילות חסדים Dr. Bin Goldman, Director of Psychology and Guidance, has taken the lead role in developing one of the exciting new programs for this year. Social Emotional Learning (SEL) training and awareness was a big part of our staff development this summer and we look forward to introducing it to your children. SEL is the process through which children (and adults) acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions. Students will have numerous opportunities for SEL throughout the year, both in and out of the classroom, through integration with the academic and Torah curricula, schoolwide programs and contests, service learning, and evidence-based SEL curricula that will be piloted in several grades. These SEL initiatives will go hand-in-hand with our school-wide program to build a sense of school community, helping create an even more positive and supportive environment for students to learn and grow. We are so excited to welcome our youngest and brightest to school today. Our Early Childhood Division teachers were waiting for the children with open arms this morning. This team of incredible teachers are ready to continue to the lay the excellent foundation in pre-student skills, social development, language, early math and science and literacy in Hebrew and English. In 1st grade, all of our מורות are working together on a uniform method to teaching kriyah called Kriability. Kriability is a systematic approach to teaching Hebrew reading where each skill is broken down in a methodical way. The new program will lead to greater accuracy and fluency by the end of first grade by teaching each rule explicitly and providing many opportunities for practice. Our success with FUNdations in kindergarten and 1st grade has now carried over to 2nd grade. As its name indicates, FUNdations makes learning to read enjoyable while laying the groundwork for lifelong literacy. Students will be a part of a systematic program in critical foundational skills, emphasizing - phonemic awareness, phonics/word study, high frequency word study, reading fluency, vocabulary, comprehension strategies, handwriting and spelling. The FUNdations program will continue to be a great addition to our literature based curriculum.

3 The LS Judaic Studies department is thrilled to unveil a new tefillah curriculum for each grade level. The goal of the curriculum is to systematically develop our children's understanding of the תפילות and to provide them with a better understanding of the structure of prayer. Additionally, our children will be using the חיינו curriculum to enhance their knowledge base and awareness of the most common Jewish facts. Finally, the schedule for our music program has been adjusted to give each class more individualized attention in smaller groups. Our General Studies program in grades 3-5 is using a new writing textbook and will be rolling out a new unit in each grade level starting in October. We are utilizing the Writing Workshop approach. To accommodate the growing number of students that qualified for math enrichment this year, we have added another section in 4th grade, taught by Mrs. Rena Strulowitz from our Middle School and Rabbi Raphy Goldstein who will be teaching the top tracks in 5th grade. We have also added a dedicated computer science teacher for the Lower School. Mrs. Judi Dimbert will be working side by side with our teachers as they incorporate more educational technology and general computer skills in the classroom. The Middle School boys Judaic Studies department spent valuable time during staff orientation discussing the intricate details of "Project Ignite." By encouraging and motivating young men to grow in learning and feel more fulfilled in תורה and,מצוות this new and exciting program will focus on meeting every student where he is. In and out of the classroom, through positive relationship building, our MSB Rabbeim will guide and inspire our children to meet their innermost potential as בני תורה and valuable members of the Yeshiva community. In General Studies, our boys and girls writing will once again stand out for its excellence. Local high schools have told us year after year that our writing program is exemplary. We hope to continue building on that through the additional training of our teachers in evaluating writing samples, and focusing on the Hochman approach in writing. The MS Science program has expanded this year. In 7th and 8th grade our classes will now meet 4 times a week providing our children with a greater opportunity to develop their Science and STEM processing, problem solving and critical thinking skills. 6th, 7th and 8th graders will all be utilizing Mosa Mack and Amplify Science Units to augment their curriculum. In Math, our students will continue to build on their reasoning skills by solving real-world problems through open-ended, standards-based task performance activities with Math Exemplars. Making math enjoyable as well as expanding skills will allow our children to communicate mathematically and work collaboratively. Our Middle School girls Judaic Studies department continues to thrive. The 6th grade girls will inaugurate a new מצוה programבת called אורה ושמחה this year. In this new and exciting initiative our girls will be learning about Jewish role models as they embrace the בת מצוה year. Connecting through תפילה will receive more attention this year, including the opportunity for each grade to daven together once a week. We are looking forward to enhancements in our Hebrew Language program. The more rigorous curriculum will put a greater emphasis on conversational Hebrew and the children's writing in Hebrew. We are excited to see a new group of 8th grade girls ready to continue the tradition of serving as student ambassadors in various leadership roles throughout the building. Finally, up and around the school, you will notice a number of aesthetic improvements. Everywhere we could, old and worn out furniture has been replaced with new models. Our Science lab, Shul, offices, and many classrooms have been updated. We revamped our entrances, installing new flooring and lighting at the Early Childhood entrance and new furniture in the guard booth at the main entrance. We have also replaced the fence that surrounds our perimeter for added safety and security. To conclude, as we enter the new school year, we thank you for entrusting your personal treasures in our hands. We look forward to polishing them, shining them and bringing out their radiance. They are the future of our community.
