3 Parsha and Parenting by Dr. Jonathan Frohlich Lot and Avraham: For or Against the Middah of the Month? Prominent among the dramatic journeys of Avraham Avinu, the first of our Avos embarks on his maiden voyage to Eretz Yisrael in the beginning of this week s parsha. In describing the participants on this journey, the Torah states Vayikach Avram And Avram took Sarai his wife and Lot his nephew, and all of the wealth that they had gathered, and all the souls they had made in Charan (Bereishit 12, 5). Rabbi Soloveitchik, in The Rav on the Parsha noted two points from this pasuk. By stating all of the wealth that THEY had gathered the Torah is grouping all of the members of the journey together. This grouping is significant in two respects. First, from a family relationship perspective, this shows that Avraham was very close to his nephew Lot. In fact, Lot was so close to Avraham, that he, Sarai, and Avraham were all lumped together in the pasuk. They fit the same relationship category. Moreover, from a pragmatic, financial perspective, the group formed a common economy they all shared together in the same r chush. Unfortunately, merely one chapter later, the relationships are different. Upon leaving Mitzrayim, the pasuk groups the family members differently Vayal Avram v Lot Imo And Avram left Egypt, him and his wife and everything he had, AND LOT WAS WITH HIM. Rather than being included in the family as an equal member, Lot is listed separately. This relationship shift is alluded to not only stylistically in the pasuk, but also grammatically. Whereas in the first pasuk the Torah uses the work Ito which is a word that implies parts of a single larger unified whole, the post-egypt pasuk uses the word Imo which implies two distinct groups happening to travel together. Lot s relationship with Avraham was downgraded from one of integration to one of distance. Why did this happen? Rabbi Soloveitchik noted that we tend to assume that Avraham was in Egypt for a very short time as the brevity of the textual narrative would imply. However, in truth, they may have been in Egypt for years! During that time, Lot became attracted to the wealth, culture and technology of Egypt. These environmental influences, while likely gradual and seemingly innocuous at the outset, slowly undermined Lot s relationship with Avram, and eroded his identification with Avraham s derech. Clearly, this process is not unique or limited to the relationship between Avraham and Lot, or to Lot s own personal religious development. Perhaps the Torah is telling this to us as a parenting pointer for us to consider in raising our own children. One central element to healthy child rearing is consistency of message. Children who get the same message at school, home, socially, and through the media, are much more likely to assimilate that message into their consciousness. For religious messages, they will be much more likely to develop a genuine identification with Torah, and to bond with all of the family and social members who are reinforcing each other s message. On the other hand, when exposed to strong environmental influences at a young age that run contrary to our religious and moral goals, children develop a sense of conflict and dissonance, and are more likely to make choices for the wrong reasons. One rule of thumb with which to judge if an influence is healthy or not, is to ask yourself how you would feel if your child s Rebbe or Morah would include that item in the lesson at school. If we would be happy that the Rebbe or Morah sang a certain song or watched a certain video with our children in class, then we have consistency of message. If we would be embarrassed to have our children sing those lyrics with his or her Rebbe or Morah, then we have inconsistency, and hence conflict. As you hopefully all know from the M.O.M. video, the Middah of the Month of October is Give the benefit of the doubt. While the message of that Middah is clear, the story of Avraham and Lot remind us that the benefit of the doubt also has limits. For example, educators and psychologists are all too familiar with stories of parents giving their children the benefit of the doubt about technology and internet access (unfiltered and unsupervised smart phones and tablets, etc ), and how such unfettered and unsupervised access has so frequently backfired and negated the Torah and family messages that were taught throughout the years. Unfortunately, by the time a parent finds out that the benefit of the doubt has been misplaced, their ability to set limits and repair the relationships and outlook is often impaired. Chazal tell us Chacham einav b rosho a wise person has his eyes in his head his eyes are open to use foresight to guide his present behavior. May the lessons of our forefathers, the literal and figurative Sheppards of the Jewish people, serve us well as the guideposts they were intended to be.
