5 High Holiday Traditions & Customs Tashlikh Tradition Continues According to a Jewish tradition, in the afternoon of the first day of Rosh Hashanah (if it falls on Shabbat, the second day) we gather as a community at a stream, brook or creek and symbolically reach into our pockets, remove crumbs and throw our sins away. Our Tashlikh service will be held in the late afternoon of the first day of Rosh Hashanah, Monday, September 10 at 5:30 pm. Join us at Meadowbrook Creek (corner of Kimber Road and Meadowbrook Drive). After our Tashlikh service, we will return to TAY in enough time to relax with a little snack before evening services at 6:30 pm. Newborn Ceremony of Blessing Rosh Hashanah celebrates creation, so what better time than the beginning of the Jewish New Year to affirm the ongoing circle of life through our children. A special Ceremony of Blessing for children born since last Rosh Hashanah will take place in the Goldberg Sanctuary during the Musaf service on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, Monday, September 10. Parents and grandparents will rise to say the traditional Shehechehyanu of having reached this special day. All new parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents are invited to participate. Please call the Temple Office at or send an to info@adath.org with your new addition s name and birth date. Cemetery Memorial Service On Sunday, September 16th at 11:00 am, we will hold the annual Temple Adath Yeshurun Memorial Service at our cemetery. Conducted by Rabbi Carl Wolkin and Ba alat Tefillah, Esa Jaffe, the service continues the tradition of visiting graves of departed loved ones between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Join with us and participate in this memorial service; a tradition of beauty and special meaning in our congregation. Operation Isaiah Please fill a bag with canned goods, soup, vegetables, fruits, fruit juice, peanut butter, jelly, tuna, and entreetype canned meals, and bring it with you to services on Kol Nidre and/or Yom Kippur, September 18th & 19th. After the holiday, food will be packed and delivered. Thank you for doing all you can to help our Central New York neighbors in need! Eileh Ezkerah & Yom Kippur Study The Martyrology, also known as Eileh Ezkerah, is a standard part of the Musaf service on Yom Kippur. The reflections of the section focus on losses in our history. The section follows the Avodah service, which describes the Yom Kippur Temple service, another section of memory. As we continue using our the mahzor, Lev Shalem, our congregation will follow the mahzor and recite selections from Eileh Ezkerah in its traditional place. On Yom Kippur, Wednesday, September 19 at 4:20 pm, we will join together for an opportunity for study. Yom Kippur Family Havdalah Service As the sun begins to set and the Gates of Heaven, according to tradition, prepare to close, our little ones children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren will march down the aisles of the Goldberg Sanctuary, each carrying a special light. As the lights are dimmed,we will say farewell to the High Holy Days and usher in the New Year. This ceremony will take place about 7:15 pm on Yom Kippur Day, Wednesday, September 19th, immediately before the blowing of the shofar. Food Related Customs for Rosh Hashanah Round Challah: Challah can be made in many shapes; braided is typical for Shabbat. The custom on Rosh Hashanah is to have round challot to symbolize the cycle of life. Dipping Apple or Challah in Honey: As a symbol of our wish for a sweet new year, there is a custom to dip a piece of apple or challah in honey and say the following before eating: Y hi ratzon m lifanekha Adonai eloheinu v elohei avoteinu she t hedesh aleinu shanah tovah oom tukah. May it be Your will, Adonai our God and God of our ancestors, to renew this year for us with sweetness and happiness. New Fruit: Another custom is to eat a just-in-season fruit which we have not yet eaten in order to focus on the cycle of seasons and to appreciate our ability to celebrate. The new fruit is eaten between kiddush and ha-motzi, after saying the brakha: Barukh atta Adonai eloheinu melekh ha-olam, boreh pri ha-etz. Praised are You, Adonai, Master of time and space, Creator of tree-fruit.

7 Simhat. Torah & More at Temple Adath Yeshurun Simhat. Torah Aliyot The central part of services? Reading the Torah. Over the course of a year we read from the beginning of the scroll to its end, tracing from creation through arriving at the Promised Land. There are two special aliyot, marked on the morning of Simhat Torah: one, Kalat or. Hatan Torah, marks the last aliyah of Deuteronomy, the other, Kalat or Hatan Bereshit, the first in Genesis. Around the world, these two aliyot are considered to be special honors. Again this year, TAY will be awarding these honors to members who have earned them through service to the congregation. Watch for the announcement designating those to be honored in Simhat. Torah Monday evening, October 1 Tots Simhat Torah at 6:00. pm Evening services at 6:00pm Join the Family Celebration which is at 6:45 pm. THE BOND OF LIFE DEDICATION OF MEMORIAL ENDOWMENTS In reverent memory of those whose names have been inscribed on our Yizkor Wall of Remembrance in Joseph Brown Rabbi Paul S. Drazen Bessie Spector Greenberg Arnold S. Manheim Ephraim H. Mizruchi Ruth T. Mizruchi Frederic Neuburger Marian Rifkin Warren L. Sebelowitz Sydney L. Shapiro Dear Congregants, As a part of the Junior Congregation service on the second day of Rosh Hashanah, our school age children will be packing up bags that can be given to children living in or entering foster care. In preparation for that activity, we will be collecting items that the children will be able to put in those bags. We are hoping to provide for children in the target age range of 5 years to 10 years old. These items should be new: Backpacks Toothpaste Hairbrush Books Coloring book Stuffed animal Pencils Small toy/activity Toothbrush Soap Tissues Water bottle Crayons Notebook Sharpener Card games With the back-to-school season there should be great deals going on in the stores so it is the perfect time to grab some things next time you are in the store. We would like all of these items to be new. We will have a collection box at the main entrance of Temple Adath Yeshurun, as well as, the entrance downstairs for the Rothschild Early Childhood Center. Donations can be dropped off from now through Friday, September 7. You are helping us to make a child s life just a little brighter in the new year. Thank you for helping us to repair the world. Sincerely, The Family and Education Programming Committee ROSH HASHANAH BACKPACK PROJECT FOR CHILDREN IN FOSTER CARE Temple Adath Yeshurun extends thanks to the Lawrence & Janet Bennett Religious Enrichment Endowment Fund, which provides funds for purchase of ritual items throughout the year.

While doing research in Eastern Europe, among the Jewish and Roma musicians, Strom collected many of the tunes the ensemble performs. Strom lived with these people, wrote about them, made filmes about them, and photographed them. All of this comes through the Hot Pstromi s repertoire. The band plays traditional traditional Yiddish/ Klezmer tunes along with Roma tunes. Many people do not know that in some regions of Eastern Europe like eastern Hungary, Carpathian Mountains, Bessarabia the Roma often played with and for Jews as did the Jewish musicians play for and with the Roma musicians. Added to this mix will be a high dosage of improvisation.
